Gavin, service dog in training, 12 weeks
Joey Jaron
September 5, 2013
I am working as a volunteer puppy raiser for an organization called Warrior Canine Connection. WCC breeds and trains dogs to be service dogs for wounded warriors. A litter of 9 labs was born in June, THE Honor Litter, all named for a fallen soldier. One of the puppies was named Gavin after Gavin Colburn. I am his puppy mom, and he will be training with me for 2 years. People ask how I will ever be able to give him up and I tell them that he was born for a higher purpose, to assist someone in leading as normal a life as possible. If anyone can give me contact info or his parents and Michelle Pfister, I would like to see if they want to follow Gavin's journey. He has a Facebook page WCC's Gavin. I hope to be able to connect with his family, best friends, etc. you can reach me t [email protected]. Thank you.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Colburn Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

My name is Martinez, A. (Sgt.) and was assigned with the 542nd in 2004 and 2005. I am no longer in the military but remember Gavin Colburn very well. On the evening before I lost a fellow soldier and a dear friend, I remember him coming to my sleeping area to ask me what I was doing; I replied to him that I was watching a movie on my small DVD player. He didn't stay long because he stated that he was going on a mission early the next day. I hate myself to this day knowing that I should have spent more time with him. My heart hurts bad. May God hold you in his arms forever.

Four years...it is hard to believe. To this day I am sad that I never had the opprotunity to meet Gavin. The fact that I will never be able to thank him for saving my sisters life on that day makes it even harder.
I miss you Gavin. But everytime I look at my sister and her daughter and the one on the way I remember you. Because without your sacrifice none of them would be here today.

So it has been 3 years since Gavin was taken from us. There is not a day goes by that I don't remember the sacrifice that he made for our country. If it wasn't for the sacrifice he made my sister would not be here today. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet Gavin and tell him how grateful I am for the sacrifices he made. He will forever be in my thoughts and in my heart.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Gavin, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I really don't know what to say. I'm sitting here at work almost two years later and while surfing the internet I stumble upon this article about Gavin. It made me cry. I was in the 818th Maint Co. and I was in the convoy in which Gavin was killed. I didn't know him personally but I remember distinctly before our convoy left FOB Endurance we had a convoy breif and the convoy commander said that if anyone needed assistance loading the frequency into their radio that PFC Colburn was the one to talk to. Everyone turned around as Gavin raised his hand so everyone knew who he was if they needed help. He was standing right behind me. It kills me to think that I could have just turned around and shook his hand. I will never forget him.

Gavin was a great person! He is my best friends older step-brother, and i remember that day he died, she called me crying as hard as she could, and she couldn't stop! I tried to help her, but everytime someone talked about iraq, or about soldiers she cries. She really loved him (As a brother). And I know for the rest of her life she will never forget him! We miss him dearly even if we dont know him, just for the fact that he worked so hard to save our country! R.i.p Gavin J. Colburn.

Dear Family,
I have been meaning to leave a message here, for a while, but have neglected to do so; however, your fine son has been in my thoughts and prayers, and we mentioned his last Sunday, in our congregation's worship, as part of All Saints' Day.
I stopped by Gavin's resting place two (2) Sundays ago, on a glorious fall Ohio day. What was remarkable, to me, was that I grew up no more than a few miles away.
I wanted to let you know that if there is anything that I as a military chaplain can do, please do not hesitate to contact me, by e-mail or by telephone (614-937-6103). Knowing that a 'son' of Ross County has fallen brings me to think of his family, and how they are doing. Sometimes, I think, the military is not the 'best' in doing longer-term ministry to those who have lost.
At any rate, I prayed at Gavin's graveside, and felt your pride. May we give thanks for his life, and his fine example.
All best wishes,

As a Viet Nam Veteran, I have witnessed the ultimate sacrifice of true heroes and am reminded of
President Lincoln's letter to a grieving mother:
Dear Madam,---I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant
General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the
field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from
the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation
that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only
the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid
so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom. Yours, very sincerely and respectfully, A.
LINCOLN.

Gavin,
You were a great friend to me and everyone else you knew. It is such a tragedy how a great, noble, and endearing person can be ripped away from his friends and family so far from home but I am so proud of you. You truly are a good man. Your actions have proven this to the world who will never forget the name and actions of one heroic soldier that sacrificed his life for a dear friend. The name "Gavin James Colburn" shall forever more be synonymous with HERO. I will never forget you. Your family will never forget you. Your friends will never forget you. The world will always remember the selfless man from a small farming community. The selfless man that always thought of others before himself regardless of the consequences. I am heart broken just as many others are but am humbled by your actions of that fateful day. I hope that I can display the courage that you have. I hope that I will lead a noble life that you would have. But for now, I have to go one day at a time. With you always in my thoughts and my heart, I will persevere.

I didn`t know Gavin personally, but I worked with his brother Matt, he spoke of his brother quit often last summer, and talked about him going into the service. He was proud, but worried too. It`s sad that he was so young. He was a HERO! And i`m very proud that we had him serving our country. May God Bless his family, and all others that he had in his life.

I just wanted to send my deepest sympathy to the family of Gavin Colburn. My sister Pfc. Michelle E. Pfister was in the truck with Gavin at the time of the accident. They were best friends and were always there for eachother. From what Michelle has told me, Gavin was a wonderful person who would do anything for anybody. His family should be proud of raising such an amazing young man. He will be greatly missed and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am glad that my sister got to serve with such a wonderful person. Eventhough I did not know him personally, I will miss him and his family will be in my thoughts. I send my deepest sympathy to his family. I will be praying for all of you during this difficult time. If you read this, you can email me anytime. Thank you for raising such a wonderful person. I am honored to have had him serve with my sister.
With deepest sympathy,

I am a stanger to you, but wanted to extend my condolenses to your family. I thought it would happen to me. My 20 year old grandson just returned from 14 months in Iraq. The pain and not knowing took it's toll on me, and I lived in constant terror. I told him of my fears one day ,and he said 'Grandma, it is the right thing, they need us there ,and we make a difference. They adored the kids there, and would have them dance and sing for the soliders. Be very proud!!

I just wanted to give my simpathy to the family of Pfc. Colburn. My sister Pfc. Michelle E. Pfister was in the vehicle with Gavin at the time of the explosion. I do not fully understand why this happened the way it did. Michelle would always talk about Gavin. They were best friends and i am glad that she had the chance to serve with such a wonderful person. I just want the family to know that i am in prayer for them. Gavin was an amazing individual and will be missed greatly.
