Jeremy Murray Obituary

ATWATER TWP. - "Freedom isn't free," Harold Murray said Thursday. "I can show you it's not."

It was his way of explaining how the life of his only son, Marine Sgt. Jeremy Murray, 28, was well spent.

Jeremy Murray died this week in Iraq.

The Murray family was told that he was a passenger in a Humvee, hit by a roadside bomb -- an improvised explosive device, or IED in military parlance.

But there was no question Thursday of the Portage County father's pride.

"I know a lot of people are against the war, but our son gave his life for it," he said. "Someday, his sacrifice will make a difference for someone other than him."

Jeremy Murray has been in the military since he graduated Waterloo High School in 1996.

But his mother knew when he really joined the service: "Birth," Pam Murray said without hesitation. Jeremy Murray told his parents that he wasn't afraid to die.

"If that's what I have to do," he told them, "that's what I have to do."

He first enlisted in the Army, returned home, worked for a few months, then joined the Marines.

"He wasn't happy with anything but the military," Harold Murray said.

His willingness to serve was ingrained in him early through an appreciation for the outdoors.

"When he was 2 years old, I'd take him through the woods (with him in) a buddy pack," Harold Murray said, his voice cracking with emotion.

His son was soon engrossed by a love of the woods, hunting and fishing. It wasn't long before he took up what would be a childhood frenzy of sorts -- a love for all things Daniel Boone, the greatest hunter of all time, he believed.

His parents made him a cap from raccoon skin, a vest of rabbit pelts and fully fringed frontier outfit. A family friend made him a bowie knife out of metal. Harold Murray even made him a replica flintlock with his bare hands.

"He moved out of the Daniel Boone costume into fatigues," Harold Murray said. "He never was out of those."

He paused.

"Never."

Given the day, Harold Murray then said something remarkable.

"The biggest mistake of my life," he said, "is I never served."

He recalled that his son spent so much time practicing for his future service that when he first entered the Army, he could break down a rifle faster than his drill sergeant.

"The drill sergeant didn't like that," his mother mused.

Sgt. Murray -- a member of the Thundering Third battalion First Marines out of Camp Pendleton -- died during his third tour in Iraq.

And his parents said they supported what he was doing there.

But that didn't mean they weren't concerned about the bad news coming out of the country. One day, Pam Murray was surfing the Internet and saw a picture that caught her eye.

It was a night photo of several Marines poised to enter an Iraqi home. One of the Marines stood with his back against an outer wall, his rifle poised for action. Even from the distant, poorly lighted photo, there was no doubt: That was her son.

"I could tell by the way he was holding his gun," Harold Murray said. "It was scary. That's your boy."

Sgt. Murray's 10-year-old niece -- Torey Frame of Atwater -- composed a handwritten letter in honor of her uncle.

Harold Murray read it aloud Thursday to a living room full of loved ones.

"I know he's a hero in my heart," Torey wrote. "I will always miss you."

Murray leaves behind a wife, the former Megan Ferringer of Stow, and their 5-year-old son, Ian.

"His son always made him laugh," Pam Murray said, pausing to collect herself.

Of all the pictures the Murrays have of their son, it was one from his childhood that caused more tears.

The young, strapping adolescent boy's homemade fringe shirt and pants were covered in a vest of rabbit pelts assembled by his father, with the homemade replica flintlock rifle poised in his hands.

The cap of raccoon skin made by his family rested on his head, inches above an impish, tilted grin. His right eye winked at the camera, like he knew something others didn't.

No one could have looked happier that day than Jeremy Murray -- Harold Murray's buddy -- standing there in the snow, wrapped in a family's love.

On this Memorial Day weekend I wanted you to know that I was thinking of you. My wish for this Memorial Day is that ever American will take a minute or two from their babrecuing and say a little prayer for our Military. That could be the greatest gift of all. I think of you and your family often.
HEROES NEVER DIE. THEY LIVE IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER.
I truly do believe this. I can promise you that you will never be forgotten. As long as I can write and until I get to that wonderful place you are, I will remember. When I get there I wil look forward to giving you one big hug and thank you!

It seems only fitting that I write on this Fourth of July. Without you, your brothers in arems, our veterans, and all branches of the Military, we would not be living the lives that we are today. From freedom of speech and religion, to the very small things that are taken for granted like walking your dog, shopping, going to the beach or just taking a drive, we thank you.
To thank you just doesn't seem enought.
I will HONOR you the rest of my life and I Will Not Forget.

Hey Brother I was just thinking about some of the good times that we had, shooting buy the pond. Remember when Jake just got his shotgun and he hit himself in the mouth from the recoil. We had some good times I have never forgotten about you brother. This past year I got a memorial tattoo in your honor of the fallen hero boots and rifle like your Dad has on his bike. My son and I were looking through some of my pictures and he me asked who you were and I told him That you were one of my Marine buddys. He said that he wanted to be a Marine too. All I could do was think of the things that your parents had said about you on this page.

You will always be a Hero in my house.

For Mr & Mrs Murray:
this is a bitter sweet day as you recall the marvellous memory of Jeremy's birth along with the ever present sorrow that any parent would understand - that he is no longer with you.
I can only hope that the years since his passing have brought you some peace as you move along with your own lives - and that you find some comfort from the many words that are left here, many by those who knew and loved Jeremy, and others, such as myself, who only came to know something of his life and the man himself through this memorial site.
I hope you won't mind if I add my birthday wishes, along with my firm belief that this boy you raised to be a good man, a patriotic American and a fine Marine is indeed in your hearts forever - the bond between parents and child is too strong to be divided by his passing. God bless you both, and Jeremy, rest in peace.

Murris,
It has been a while now and I am still waiting for that phone call to assemble the "team". I finally got a M4 and everytime I look at it, all the great memories we made comes rushing in.

Now, I am not as lean and doing the civilian tour. (Stop laughing). It is nice sleeping in the same bed every night, but I can't forget the big circus tents flying away in two different countries.(Thanks to the German helicopter pilot and Iraqi dust storms) I miss you alot and the time that we had together will carry me until we meet again.

Sgt. Murray was a fairly quiet Marine. Didn't engage in the silly "sewing-circle" politics or frat-boy shenanigans that inevitably arise in the World's Biggest Boy's Club.

He had a wonderful, pessimistic sense of humor that I immediately took a liking to; once I could get it out of him. Once you got the man to start talking, you got a sense of his deep passion for all things martial: Topics from hunting to ambushes to proposed improvements in Marine Corps Machine Gunnery Doctrine were discussed (and debated) at length. Nearly all conversations away from home ended with discussion or reference to his family.

I was a bit of a "Scalawag" when I served with Jeremy. I had a penchant for scrounging while deployed to foreign countries; anything from fresh bread in Kosovo, to Gin in Djibouti, to nasty copper-still vodka from our Eastern European allies. Sgt. Murray was a stand-up guy, but a pragmatist: He was one of many NCOs that knew what I was up to, but pretended not to. As long as nothing got out of hand and warm bread got shared with cold Marines on a miserable, rainy hilltop, huddled around burning pallets in Godforsaken countries.

It still did not stop him from bestowing the occasional disapproving head-shake and tactful advice to watch my six. ;)

Tomorrow is Memorial Day. I have visited his guest book several times, and could never find the words to express what I really wanted to say. I have thought about him often, and as I raise my own two sons, I think about Megan and Ian, the family he left behind.

Sgt. Jeremy E. Murray:

There is no higher compliment that befits a warrior than this: You were a Professional.

I'll see you on Heaven's Streets, brother.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I thought I saw just the hint of a smile in this photo of Jeremy Murray but I also see calm assurance there, the look usually found in someone who considers the whole situation and then acts - a quality which is useful in many situations, but which is an invaluable asset in a serving soldier.
There's no doubt that he was just the man you would want covering your back in a tight spot.
Mr Murray - you said that the only mistake you made was in never serving. Sir, may I gently disagree with you? Heroes aren't only found in uniform. Those who wait at home, doing their level best to carry on as normal, show courage aplenty. You and Mrs. Murray gave your country the wonderful gift of a special man who proudly wore the title of United States Marine and that's a gift beyond price.
Rest in Peace Sgt. Jeremy Murray

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

We are so sorry for your loss. Jeremy stands as a hero in the finest traditions of the United States Marine Corps. Please accept our prayers and sympathy during this hard time. On January 22, 2007 we lost our son-in-law in Iraq. Spec. Nicholas Brown was in 1st Cavalry Division and loved being a soldier. He left behind a young wife and a newborn son. Their life verse is Joshua 1:9. It has given us some peace and guidance, I hope it will help you too. Thank you,

Dean Weeks

Dear Family of Sgt. Jeremy Murray,

My name is Dean Weeks, and served with your son, husband, and father. He is what every Marine NCO espired to. While in Iraq, with 2/2 He helped to lead our CAG team to a safe return home, as well as a successful deployment. I was there for the funeral, and I want you to know that both he and you will remain in the prayers of my wife and I forever. I look forward to the day when I can sit down and talk to you about the incredible influence he had on me, and the way he lead Marines. I wish only the best for this family, and I will always remember Sgt. Jeremy Murray.

Harold, Pam and Family,
You're in my thoughts and prayers today. Your family is extra special to me. Eventhough we met each other through very sad circumstances, I'm so glad we met. (I think God had something to do with that!) Having you as friends has helped me through my loss of Danny. I sure hope Jeremy and Danny have met each other by now. I'm sending you all a big hug and I'm praying for you.

To the family of Sgt Jeremy E. Murray: I can not begin to express how sorry I am about your loss. I had the pleasure of serving a couple of years with Murris at 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines. Well I have just recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq to find out that my long time partner in crime is gone. I am so heartbroken to know that I will never get to see my friend again. Pam and Harold were like second parents to about 8 of us aspiring military boys growing up. The trips to West Branch and going to the woods to pretend we were the best of the best. I will always remember the impact Jeremy had in my life as well as the rest of the group. I hope that wherever he is he's looking down at all of us who loved him saying lock it up and stand tall everything will be alright. My deepest sympathy goes out to the whole family. I am so sorry this happend. I love you guys.
