Eric Caban Obituary

Eric Caban, 28, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in Afghanistan.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of University Christian Church. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Eric will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.

Memorials: His memory may be honored with a gift to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Box 13483, Tampa, Fla. 33681-3483.

Eric graduated from Paschal High School in 1996. A year after graduating from high school, Eric joined the Army, where he became a sniper with the Rangers. In October 2001, he fought in Afghanistan, where he participated in a strategically important operation to secure the Kandahar airfield. In 2002, Eric ended active duty and decided to enroll in the University of Texas at Arlington. His passion for the Army had him re-enlist in 2004. After serving a short time as a sniper instructor, he started the process to become a Green Beret. Eric completed his training in March 2006 and deployed to Afghanistan in May 2006.

Eric had a zest for life. There was never a dull moment; he was definitely the life of the party. To say he had a big heart would be an understatement. He genuinely cared for and loved those around him.

Survivors: Parents, Efren Caban and his wife, Iris; brothers, Efren Caban Jr. and his wife, Sarah, and Edwin Caban; nieces, Audrey and Olivia Caban; and maternal grandmother, Antonia Almodovar.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to Wreaths Across America to honor and remember Eric Caban US Army Staff Sergeant. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

I met Eric shortly before he rejoined the military. Being an Army brat I instantly knew he was a good person. I met him on my 21st birthday. He gave me a tv and some VHS tapes he had brought to my apartment. I was broke and it was the first time I lived alone. I came across one of those tapes and wondered how he was doing. I was saddened to see that he had passed. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I didn't know him very well, or for very long but he was an amazing person and a great friend to everyone who knew him. Rest easy soldier and thank you for your kindness and your sacrifice.

On May 23rd, 2015 my family and I participated in the I Did the Grid 4 mile run/walk. The run is organized by Team Chris, an organization founded by the family of Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer who was killed in action in July of 2007. As part of the run participants carry the names of four fallen heroes on our bibs to honor the sacrifice that they and their families have made so that we and our families may live free. There are no awards or medals. We ring a bell in honor of the names we carry when we cross the finish line. Eric's name was on my husband's bib. We cannot begin to know your sorrow but we can promise you that he will not be forgotten and that your family will remain in our prayers.

Eric and I went to high school together. I can honestly say he was one of the best people I knew there. He always made hilarious jokes AND stood up for fairness and for those students who were bullied or marginalized. He had a great heart with room for everyone. I was very sad to hear about this although I am eternally grateful for his service. I am so sorry for Eric and the entire Caban family.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

On this Memorial Day 2008, We continue to think about you everyday of the week for the past 2 years. You will always be loved and missed and most of all remembered for being a friend, family and protector of our great land. I will always remember the great times we had over the years, especially after you joined the Army and of course I was a Marine so we always messed with each other, but there was always the respect. Thanks again and always for the dedication you showed to us all.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the family of Staff Sgt. Eric Caban,

We had the honor of speaking with brother, Edwin Caban today at the State Capitol in Texas and expressed our deepest sympathy over the loss of Eric.

Sgt. Caban, joins a long and distinguished list of great Americans who have given the nation and their comrades in arms, all they could give. We must pause, in honor and awe of this kind of patriotism. We must also pledge to be worthy of his sacrifice.

As a veteran I will hold the name of Staff Sgt. Eric Caban in my memory along with all the other greats in our nation's history, living and dead. God Bless the Caban family.

To Efrin and Family,

I cannot imagine the grief you must feel over loosing your beloved son, brother. There is nothing more honorable then a man who would lay down his life for others. Your son, brother was a hero to me and my family. I am sure you are so proud. I hope to teach my son the qualities you taught yours. Qualities such as - One who thinks of others needs before his, one who will stand and lead. One who will give his best in all he does. Praying the Lord will comfort you all during this time. All our love,

To the Family of Staff Sgt. eric Caban:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Dear Caban Family,

I am so sorry for the loss of Eric. He was a great guy who seemed to always know how to make me laugh and smile. We went to Paschal and worked together at the zoo. Eric and I had lost contact since I'd graduated highschool. But on the fourth of July he had contacted me via email and since then we had kept in contact emailing one another twice or three times a week. I will truly miss him with all of my heart and may he rest in peace.

Although I never had the honor of meeting Eric, I am indebted to him for the sacrifice to our wonderful nation. As was mentioned on several occasions this morning, Eric was involved in a noble mission. The United States of America benefited greatly due to the dedication and loyalty of Eric. I would also like to offer the condolences of the DFW USO. We will always be here should you need anything.

My heart goes out to the Caban family and I am truely sorry for your loss. I went to high school with Eric and can remember him telling me that he wanted to join the military and be in Special Forces. He accomplished that goal and has now made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Eric is a hero for doing such and will be missed by all. All Honor To His Name!

Mr &Mrs Caban,

Although I only had the pleasure of meeting your son once, I realized how wonderful of a person he was thru Edwin as well as from other people that had worked at the zoo. Edwin always spoke so highly of Eric and was always very of proud of him, as he should be. You have raised wonderful sons and should be very proud of them. Eric is a hero to all of us and I am truly grateful for people like him protecing our liberties each and every day. God Bless

My heart felt condolance goes out to all of the Caban family and friends. Eric and I had planned on being together when he got home from Afghanistan. Sometimes God's plans are different than our own. Eric served his country well and was doing what he loved. He had a zest for life that I have never seen before. May we cherish the fond memories we shared with him.

Matthew 5:9

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God."

I love and miss you Eric.

I attended high school with Eric and remember joking around with him quite a bit in some of our classes when we probably should have been paying attention. He was a very likeable person. I was saddened to hear this and my condolences go out to his family.

I read this message on a train as it was passing in front of us one day: WE ARE NOT THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE BUT, WE ARE TRULY THE LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.

I write this to families of our fallen soldiers hoping to bring them a small moment joy in there time of sorrow. Diane
