It's been over 13 years since we rendered our final honors to you. And yet, I don't think a single day has passed, since then, that your name hasn't been on one of our minds or spoken by one of us, out loud. I still remember the first conversation that you and I struck up, when we first got to Kuwait, standing at an outdoor chow area sharing a table, with a couple of other Soldiers. And how we found out that you and I had actually been in the Cobra course, at the same time, years before. From that first conversation, the bonds of friendship and respect, that we forged, were unbreakable. I can't imagine having more respect for anyone, than I still have, (to this day), for the Soldier, Pilot, devoted Husband, Father, Friend and Brother, that you were Chief. Even though I've been retired and out of the Army now, for more than six years, I still find myself thinking about you, my friend, often. With all that's going on in the world, with this COVID business, we've all been forced to spend a lot more time, staying indoors and spending time with our thoughts. I just wanted you to know that mine, often turn to you. But they're good memories, of a great man. They truly are. My brother; I pray you have a full canteen and are surrounded by fellow Troopers, sharing great stories, there on the Green. And I pray that your family, who you spoke of, so often, and loved so much, are doing incredibly well. You will never be forgotten Sir. Until we meet again, may you be, forever, at Peace.

Thinking of you and the impact of your life, what an amazing person you were that still leaves a legacy to be the best you can and to fight for what you believe in. I know that your loss may have been years ago but still felt by many!

Keith was one of the best pilots I ever knew and I truly miss my friend. I was in Iraq the day we all got the news that a true Warrior had lost his life saving others. It was hard for me to get over losing a friend like Keith, for me the anger slowly disappeared three years ago. I know he waits for me in Fiddler's Green where all Cav Troopers stop to drink the cool water while sitting in the tall green grass.

Keith was one of our pilots in Korea. As an enlisted aircrew flying in the backseat, you were an equal part of the crew flying with him. I went to Iraq to fly missions there one year after that fateful day and I feel guilty every day that Im still here and two good men with families are not. It really hurts me still to this day. I just want you to know that I have not, and will never forget about you.

Sir,
As we come upon another year passing since that fateful day, know that we all still remember what you meant to all of us. You know what lies ahead for me and I know you will be watching over me.
The car has been temperamental at times and I believe that was you trying to teach me patients and humility. Know that we will continue to get it out there for you and hopefully get it up to Ft. Hood. God bless you and your family. Air Assault!

Even though it's been nearly 13 years, since we were in Iraq, I don't think a single day goes by that I don't think of Keith. Even though he was a Chief Warrant Officer and I enlisted, it made little difference to him. He never saw everyone as people and only saw rank, when there was a mission to complete. I was honestly surprised, the first time that we met, because he began asking me questions about myself, my background and my service. And he seemed genuinely interested. It turned out that we actually had a similar career path, starting with AH-1 Cobra helicopters, and had even entered the Army, just a few months apart. Even though we were both part of an Apache unit, in Iraq, Any time Chief Yoakum happened by me, he'd ask how his "Cobra Buddy" was doing. The man was a very rare human being, who loved his family, loved his country and who tried his best to find good in all of those who he met and those who worked with him. On February 13'th of this year, the American Flag, in my front yard, will be lowered to half mast, as it is every year, on that date. On on that day, my heart we sink too. This world is a much smaller and much less wonderful place, without people like CW4 Keith Yoakum in it, but heaven is all the richer, for having him there. The one thing, in all of this that does warm my heart, a bit, is knowing that Keith's family is still here and doing well. It would make him immensely happy, to know that they are well. I'm sure of it, because they were his favorite thing to talk about, and his greatest sense of pride. My the Good Lord keep them all and keep them well. And may He hold Keith, and his Battle Buddy, Jason DeFrenn, in the palm of his hand, until we meet again. Until then Keith, sleep well brother. "And, when it's my time, I look forward to seeing you there, on Fiddlers green."

I was fortunate enough to not only know and serve with CW4 Keith Yoakum but I also got to experience the type of character he had.
In Iraq, I was assigned to do a heavy labor task for he and his unit and I arrived driving an air conditioned forklift. But when I offered to show Keith how to operate it, he refused and insisted upon doing the physical labor and the moving of boxes, so that I could enjoy the air conditioning. And he pointed out that enlisted soldiers like me normally did all of the hard labor, in the Iraqi heat, while he and his fellow pilots enjoyed the air conditioning, which we enlisted kept working on their aircraft, for them.
No other words were said and he did that heavy labor work, every day, for the next week.
Keith would always bring me a cup of coffee, when he'd arrive at work, carrying his own cup. And although I offered to let him drive again, on most of those mornings, he only laughed, pointed at the cab of the truck, slapped me on the back, rolled up his sleeves and he went to work.
On another occasion he saw me struggling to learn a new system on the aircraft and asked if he could help, saying that he was very familiar with the new system.
As Keith was teaching me every tiny facet and function of each component, he let it slip that he had other duties waiting on him, that would need to be done when we had finished. With that, I insisted that I didn't want to keep him from his tasks and said he should go take care of them, because I didn't want to make more work for him.
Being very true to his own form though, Chief Yoakum only smiled and said that he didn't mind giving up some free time later, if it meant helping me learn this new system now, because he knew my work, and the soldiers I would be teaching it to, could save other soldiers and pilot's lives. He added that he could see that I really cared about what I was doing and that meant he had an obligation to help me.
For an officer of his rank and station to take time out of his day to help a low ranking E4, like I was and for him to let me know that he took the time to notice how seriously I took the aircraft repairs I was doing, spoke volumes to me about what kind of an officer he was but for him to treat me as an equal and speak to me with the respect of a friend, well that told me all I needed to know about the man.
On those two occasions that I was fortunate enough to have worked with Keith, we discussed our careers, families and histories.
What I learned from those conversations was that Keith loved his wife and children dearly and I believe that he was more incredibly proud of them than anything else in this world. I also learned that he held our nation in high regard and was proud to wave an American flag and even prouder to serve in defense of it. He truly wanted to make ours a better and safer world to live in.
Less than a week after he gave selflessly of himself, to teach me, Keith was gone.
I never got to tell him how much respect and admiration I had for him or return the kindnesses he showed me and so many other soldiers.
To this day though, I make it a point to try to show the same respect and kindnesses he showed me, to every lower ranking soldier and person that I meet.
In this way, I will honor the man, the soldier, the officer and proud husband and father that he was.
That is the kind of effect he had on me and probably anyone who was lucky enough to get to know him.
May you rest peacefully Keith Yoakum and may God bless you with the knowledge that you will never be forgotten.

Keith,
We do not need a special day to bring you to our minds. The days we do not think of you are very hard to find. Each morning when we awake we know that you are gone. And no one knows the heartache as we try to carry on. Our hearts still ache with sadness and secret tears still flow. What it meant to lose you on one will ever know. Our thoughts are always with you, your place no one can fill. In life we loved you dearly; in death we love you still. There will always be a heartache, and often a silent tear. But always a precious memory of the days when you were here. We hold you close within our hearts; and there you will remain, To walk with us throught our lives until we meet again. Our family chain is broken now, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Miss you, Love you, Mom

It was 45 years ago Thanksgiving eve that you and Kevin were born, and now that you are not with us Thanksgiving was not quite as good. She has grown up to be a beautiful young lady. Of course I know you are aware of that. We really enjoyed her visit, just wish it could have been longer. On Sunday July 11, 2010 we went to the Riverside National Cemetery where the "Lost Heroes Art Quilt" was on display at the Ampitheater. It was a beautiful place for it to be displayed with the lake in the background.
The quilt has a service member from each of the 50 states as well as 32 more in the broder. You are in the border. All of the pictures are of service members when they were young and looking foward to their futures.
It is truly an AWSOME quilt and I feel honored to have gotten to see it in person.
You always had a irrestible smile and I am so pround of all of your accomplishments thru the years and proud to be your Mom.

Miss seeing you and telling funny stories to make your face turn red...Me and Halley go to the memorial in Hemet just about monthly and freshen the flowers or plants and leave a message for you on a ribbon, when we leave, there is still a "sadness" among us but not as much as the "pride" we carry for having you as part of our lives and knowing you touched so many other people that are also proud to have met you. Its hard to let someone like you go..everytime I look at one of your pictures I still tear up. You are GREAT...We miss you lots..Happy Birthday..The Sky is the LIMIT !

Hey Daddy,
It's been a while, thought I would write you something.
I miss you so much, I think about you everyday, it's funny how the littlest things can spark a memory you know?
Well, mom told me today that your picture and stuff finally got put up in the museum on Fort Rucker, I wish I was there so I could go see it.
Mom said when i go to visit she will take me to see it.
I think it's pretty amazing. You deserve every bit of what you get and more in my book. No one will ever be more deserving than you.
I've been thinking about it more and more lately, the things you wont be here for... I cant believe you wont walk me down the isle when I get married, or be there when I have my first child to carry around in a bunny suit, I know you would have been the BEST grandpa ever, it breaks my heart you never got to experience that. When I moved, and mom stood outside holding Maggie watching me drive away, I know you were there with your arm around her, I know you are the reason she kept it all together.
I find myself holding on to things and people for the pure fact that you were connected somehow.
I hate that you wont get to meet the guy who is crazy enough to ask me to marry him, or finish teaching me how to fly. I hate that I didn't take advantage of every second I had with you, because now it's too late.
There are so many what ifs that cloud my brain on a daily basis. I just wish I didn't have to wonder.
I try to live my life how you would want and I strive to be the woman you wanted me to be.
I want to be just like you, I always have.
I hope that one day people will look at me and see a you rubbing off on me.
I want to make you proud, I hope that i am daddy.
Im going to go to sleep now though, I have to work at 10am so i need my rest, you know how I am about waking up in the morning lol.
I love you with all my heart.
Always, Katelynn

Keith, What a Wonderful tribute to you. At the Hemet Ryan Air Show, there were three guys from the Heritage Foundation, who flew the missing man formation for you. They flew older Army trainer's that were all painted in cammie. After their first flight, they sat at a table near us. One wore a CWO Bar, so I asked about his SVC and he had been shot down twice in Vietman. What a wonderful man he was. He asked if we would stay for their second performance. Which was also dedicated to you. He came to our table and had a picture taken with me wearing his Cav Hat. Keith we miss you more each day. It is wonderful when your memory is honored.

"If the pattern of life looks dark to you and the threads seem twisted and queer, to the One who is planning the whole design it's perfectly plain and clear; for it's all a part of God's loving plan when He works His threads of gray and they'll only make brighter the rose and gold of another happier day."

I worked with Keith Yoakum in Fort Rucker, AL in the AH-64A MTPC. He always looked out for the soldiers around him and constently showed interest in the thoughts of others in all situation. He is truly missed by many! Just the most outstanding man I have ever met in the Army. I wish his family the best that they can have.

Dear Yoakum family I served with Keith in the 90's on Ft Campbell
Really not to good with type of thing but I remember when Keith got to 2nd batt many years ago. As you get older you think back on things and who was there and the names you forgot and the faces but I'll always remember certain ones Cheif Yoakum is in the list... always happy to be there and to help out I think sometimes he wanted to be a chewcheif and a pilot at the same time. Guys would come back in from missions and He's was always the pilot that helped tie down aircraft and push them in when we need to. If you look at the picture of him and the cessna thats the way I remember him sleeves half up and ready to go.
We use to talk cars in the cage and remember us debating on chevy vs ford more than once. If you need anything from the Ftcky area don't hesitate to contact me...
I read earlier where the car is still kicking. :) Take care of it and get the plane going girls I'm sure Dad had you flying.

To the Family and friends of CWO 4 Yoakum,
I would like to start out by saying I am sorry for our loss. Mr. Yoakum was definately a soldier to be emulated. I knew Mr. Yoakum from March of 1995 till I left Ft. Campbell in 1997. I was an impressionable young avionics troop at that time, and he helped mold me into a Man. He kept hounding me to go to through the Warrant Officer program and become a pilot with him. Unfortunately I did not go down that path. He took me into the Apache simulator as often as he could to help me out. I just wish I could have repaid him for all of the great training he gave me.
So if there is anything I can do for you Mrs. Yoakum or your daughters, please feel free to contact me. There is no request too little or too big. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.
To Mr and Mrs. Yoakum, I know you know how much your son meant to all of us. Although I was just a soldier who worked to help get his aircraft flying, his leadership and his dedication will never be forgotten. He would always take the time to try to learn every little detail about that aircraft and he was a great officer. Please except my deepst sympathy and know that if there is anything you need, you too may contact me.
To Mr. (Keith)Yoakum,
AIR ASSUALT! You sir will be missed but I will fix your aircraft anytime, anywhere!

My name is Patrick Curdy.
Keith and I left for basic training out of los angeles on the 16th of Sep 1986. We didn't know each other but we were about to form a short friendship for those two months. We were assigned to C53 at Ft Dix N.J. and also assigned to the 4th platoon and also roomates, there were eight of us. I remember very vaguely my time there but I did remember Keith very well, he was very kind and had a great personality. It was a year ago around this time that I had found him through the Army white pages. I was enquiring on obtaining our old platoon picture of ours that I had lost. I e-mailed him asking if he had and he said when he got home from his tour he would be glad to give me a copy of one. Two months later like I do every sunday I was looking at the LA Times looking at the military deaths and there was his name. I thought to myself this was unreal. Here was someone I reconected with after some 20 years and was taken away. I was very sadened that day. I would like to take my time to tell his family and dearest friends that I express my dearest sympthay to all of you. God bless you Keith always.
Thinking of you always an old army friend.

My husband used to race his Chevelle against Keith and Kevin when he was in high school...he lost! He still talks about both of them and the car...I went to school with Keith and although I did not know him well losing another Hemet grad to the war hit me hard. Keith will be honored this Sunday (Veterans Day) here in Hemet with the Distinguised Service Cross at Gibbel Park and his name is going to be added to our memorial. One 6 other DSC medals have been awarded since 1975. I will be there.

Keith,
I will never forget riding to the dropzone in the beast, listening to new music as we discussed all the cool things we were going to do in the air that weekend. We discussed music, cars, airplanes & flight school as we were mesmerized by the sound of helicopters flying overhead. I can still see you driving the beast with one hand, your head out the window, waving your other hand at the apaches, blackhawks and heuy's, whooping it up as they flew by.
Soaring through the sky with you on skydives & airplanes are some of my best and favorite memories. You were a mechanic then with a dream of one day being the pilot-in-command of your very own Apache. The Long-bow was new then. I recall sneaking to the airfield to get our first look at the odd looking Apache with a bubble on top. "What is that?" I can still hear you asking.
It was a sad day when you left the Army to return to California. Then one day you returned to Ft. Campbell with your beautiful wife Kelly, two adorable little girls and a puppy. Your dreams came true, Keith. You became the best pilot ever, raised two wonderful daughters & were extremely happy with your family. Keith we all miss you!
I find it hard to believe that you are no longer with us but know in my heart that we will once again see you. Hold a spot for us on that eternal skydive & we will one day swoop in, complete the formation and laugh again! High flight Keith!
Blue skies my brother,

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Yoakum Family,
It was my pleasure to work with your husband for the time we were in korea together. I was always the guy on the other end of the radio, when he called off in his loud calls he always did. Keith was always motivated and inspired many others around him to be also. In our time together he taught me so much about aviation and actually tried to help me become a warrant officer to fly. He was a great mentor to me and everyone else in the flight operations section. He will be greatly missed and my prayers go to you.
