At age four, Kile was already interested and playing army. Born in Pasadena his mother established roots in Round Rock and Hutto, Texas. Kile was a very goal oriented man and knew what he wanted out of life and his plans of joining the military was a very large part of his plans. Kile completed his high school years at Hutto High School. He was a team player in all that he pursued and participated in baseball, football, track, weight lifting and FFA. He was our all around American guy. Kile attended Blinn Junior College in Brenham for his freshman year. He transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University and graduated with a business management degree. While in Nacogdoches Kile joined the SFA ROTC program as a junior and simultaneously became a Sgt. in the National Guard in Lufkin. He was also the secretary of Delta Chi Fraternity where he was requested to serve as President. After thoughtful consideration, Kile declined so he could focus on his military career. Kile represented his fraternity brothers by boxing for the Boys and Girls club in Nacogdoches. Kile was commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in a single candidate ceremony the evening before his SFA graduation. Kile was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and was deployed for Iraq on October 3, 2006. Kile was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and received the official promotion order on the day of his heroic action. Kile was due home on June 15th for military leave, and was looking forward to his rest and relaxation time and to celebrate with family and friends his 24th birthday. We remember Kile having extremely high expectations for himself and for those around him. He was very caring and had a big heart as well as being very goal oriented and driven. "Son - We are so proud of you, for who you have become, and what you stand for. We know in our hearts, you were doing what you needed to do in Iraq; we would have never expected any less from you. You are our Hero, our son. We will miss you and love you forever. Love, Mom and Dad".

To the family of Kile G. West. I wanted to let you know I am thinking and praying for y'all. I taught at First Baptist Christian Academy, Pasadena, in 2007. Now I am a piano teacher, and an educational therapist there. I remember hearing about his sacrifice and thinking to me myself, that was meant for me, but he took it, so I could teach and impact the children from his hometown. Know I think about his and your sacrifice often as I teach, and hope I teach and equip students in a way that is honoring to his life.

I think changing it and going out there helps him remain close to you! Dad still misses you dearly too. You were an angel that blessed our family and we will continue to honor, cherish, love and miss you dearly!

Dear Son, I am here in Northern Iraq getting to explore the wonderful things that you and all the military have accomplished. From when you were here and what I can see now there have been a lot of improvements in the area and with a lot less deaths in Iraq; all of this has to do with you and all the others that have come and gone; truly an amazing job. My heart deepens every day in respect for all those that serve and I could not be any prouder of you, I feel so blessed to have been given you as my son. I miss you so much but I know how special you are and what your mission was here and why you had to go but I will see you again one day so get ready for the years worth of hugs that I have not been able to give.
Love you always, Mom

To Kile's family, please accept my deepest condolences. Kile was a superb young officer. I had the honor to meet and serve with him while serving as a military advisor for the Iraqi BDE his unit, 2-9 CAV, partnered with during my second tour in Iraq. Kile and I talked often as he and I attended the same synchronization meeting every morning and we sat next to each other. He was a great warrior and leader. His Soldiers adored and respected him and even his superiors, like me, cannot help but to admire him. He was energetic, sharp as a razor, always ready and willing. On the sad day of his loss, I was shocked. I cried in disbelief. Not only America lost one of his finest young officers but I lost a good friend. May your soul rest in peace my good friend.

I just learned of Kile's passing and wanted to express my deepest condolences to Nanette, Grady, Kelli, Kara and family. I had the privilage of meeting Kile briefly in the Spring of 2004 and although I did not know him that well, I realized his great kindness and compassion toward friends and family. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Kile was the very first boy i'd taken interest in, he was always so sweet to me when we were kids. I thank him for his bravery, and everyone over in Iraq risking your lives for ours. Rest in peace Kile, we all love you and miss you.

I knew Kile during our officer training at Ft. Sill, OK, and am now currently serving at Camp Bucca, Iraq. We quickly became friends and I really enjoyed his company in and outside of the classroom. We spent many times together in the outdoors talking about our past and our futures. He was always positive and optimistic and I know he was a rock of confidence for his Soldiers during tough times. He called me before he got on the plane to Iraq. I was so shocked to hear of his untimely death, as we had also talked just a month or so before it happened.

Kile was a fine man, and a good example to all who knew him. I had looked forward to seeing him again when we were all back from Iraq, but now I will have to wait until the next life. I know the Lord loves Kile for the good person he was, and that now He is blessing those who loved Kile.

My deepest condolences go to his family. You can always rest assured that your son and brother was a good man.

May the Lord bless you all,

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Kile, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Man oh man, I wish I could have spent so much time with you when we were younger. Mallary told me how incredible of a man you'd become, and it pains me to think that I'll never have the opportunity to know you. My thoughts and prayers have been with you and your family. I know that you're looking down on all of us, still keeping an eye on what's going on- I know that I live my life every day taking things for granted because people like you were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for us.

God bless you, Kile.

And your mother for being strong.

Lt. West & Family,
There is no greater pain than the pain of losing a loved one. I myself can say I have been there. My cousin PFC Ron Joshua was killed in Baghdad last July of wounds from IED's. There is nothing I can say to this family to make you feel better or take away your hurt. But I can say that your son, cousin, brother, nephew, friend, and our hero and soldier died doing what he believed was the right thing.
Lt. Kile West, I have more respect for you than you will ever know. Thank you for being so brave and thank you for helping to keep us safe at home. You will always be remembered and you will always be in our hearts. If you see Ron up there, tell him we love him too.

Sincerly, Kirsten Crider 17 of Austin Texas

We came across some pictures today of when you were a little boy. You had that cute little smile.I talked along time with Mimi a few days ago about how you went out on your own and became a real and loving man. I will never forget visiting with you at my parents home a few days before you left. You talked about your family and relationships. I will always remember your words and now I understand where you were coming from. Kile, Taylor talks about you often even though you were never really close. She always talks about your last visit with us. We are proud and look forward to the day we can sit down and talk in Heaven. Thank you for everything you did while you were here. We are so proud to have you as our cousin. We know your looking down with grandpa and watching over us. Avery has become such a good little friend with Carter. He is proud of his big brother.

Nanette, I think about you and Kile often. Hew was still in Command of HHT/6-9 CAV when Kile was killed. He arrived home for R & R the day before Kile's funeral. We both attended the funeral with the new baby. I have attended many funerals and memorials in the last 14 months for our fallen troopers (more than anyone should have to). But, I have to say that Kiles' was by far the hardest and most heart breaking for me. Hew had a hard time talking about Kile being killed. I watched him during the service as he was watching the video of Kile as a baby, teenager, and then a young soldier. I could see the pain in his eyes as he looked down at our new son, knowing that he had to go back to a place that just took your son from you. But, I also saw pride in his eyes. He was proud that he knew a soldier like Kile. Kile was a great leader and a wonderful soldier. Nanette, please know that I have kept you in my prayers and that I think of you all the time. It broke my heart knowing such a wonderful person like you would have to indure such pain. When you would speak with me about Kile, your whole face would light up with pride. Anyone could tell that he was your whole world. The world has lost a great leader and a woman has lost a great son. God bless you and your daughters. This will leave my email address so that you can contact me if you ever need to talk or need anything. I miss you.

"Never Have So Few, Given So Much, For So Many"

On the day I began my return trip back to the world, you made your journey to be with God. Hard to believe the war was ending for both of us and our families, on the same day, but it two totally different way. Always Remembered, Never Forgotten!

August 22, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I knew Kile since he reported to Fort Hood, TX. I was his senior fire support officer in our cavalry squadron, 6-9 CAV. He knew that we were about to leave for Iraq, and he did his best to get his crew ready for combat. While serving together in Iraq, I often spoke with Kile about everything from his personal life to his career options in and after the Army. He was a great person, a terrific officer, and an inspirational soldier. He was the first officer assigned to me, and he is the closest to a protege that I've ever had. I miss Kile, and it was an honor to serve with him. God bless you, Kile, and I know that you're looking down on us and helping to protect us everyday.

I was not fortunate to know Kile the way some people did. However, Kile was placed in my life for a reason. I am deeply saddened to know I will never meet him. I was informed of Kile’s death on June 28th.

In January 2007; I received an e-mail about Kile & his unit needing certain items. This e-mail was sent to several different people, before I received it. I made a phone call and then contacted Nanette. I had come up with an idea to help Kile & his Unit.

Girl Scout Troop 1997, in Wimberley, Texas; set up a box at the local grocery store asking for donations. My daughter, Alix and step-daughter, Taylor are in this Girl Scout Troop. The citizens of Wimberley donated an abundant amount of stationary items, toiletry items and snack items (including Girl Scout Cookies). The Girl Scouts sent 5 big heavy boxes stuffed full to Kile. The Girls even sent letters and drew pictures for Kile and his unit. My family even sent 2 big heavy boxes stuffed full. Kile did send the girls a letter and a picture thanking them.

It has been an Honor to make a difference in the lives of so many I will never meet. Kile’s memory will live on in each and every one of us. We will all miss you Kile!

I met Kile in the fall semester of 2005 at SFA while he was in the fraternity and I was a little sis. We briefly dated for a couple of months until I ended up transferring to Texas Tech. That short time that Kile and I hung out still lives on so vividly in my memory. Kile would walk up to my dorm all dressed in uniform and we would grab a quick bite to eat for lunch. Or we would be in the library studying and I would listen to him talk to his little brother about his day at school. I got the chance to ride on his dirt bike and I remember how long it took him to get me on that thing. But once I did, we had a blast. The formals, the parties at his house and the giant slip 'n slides seem just like yesterday. I got a chance to talk to Kile back in April when he called while still stationed in Iraq. To this day I can still remember the conversation that we had and the sound of his voice. I thank God that I got that chance to talk with him. That will always live in my memory. But I know now that he is home and watching down on us. I continue to pray for him and his family. God Bless.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I first want to Thank KILE for being in the armed forces and serving our country. He is a True American HERO. When I found out the news on May 29th my heart was torn. Kile was such a gentlemen. He was an "All American Guy" just all around good. My heart and prayers go out to his family. Grady and Melissa have been such a possitive influnce in my life growing up in church with them. I know Kile loved ya'll so much. One day I will be able to see Kile in heaven and let him know how proud I am of him. May God Bless his Family and Friends.

I'm so terribly sorry for the loss of your son. I know first hand that pain you are feeling. My son SPC Harry (Buck) Winkler III was killed on November 12, 2006 along with his 1st Lt Michael Cerrone and their interputer. The days seem long and the nights longer and so many unanswered questions. I pray that you have let God in to heal you and give you comfort at this time. A mother of another fallen soldier I've been writing too told me she met you at the grave and how the two of you embraced. Her son was Kristopher Higdon. I want to offer any emotional support to you and your family. I know how hard this is and God has blessed me with being able to talk to others. When and if you are able please contact me. May God's healing love give you guidance and understanding.

Nanette, Grady, 1Lt. Kile West's immediate and extended family and friends, words cannot express the sadness Freddy and I felt when we heard of Kile's passing. If we had only known what a brave young man he would become when we watched him play baseball with Justin and Aaron in the Pasadena Little League. We remember Kile’s quiet personality. Nanette and Grady, you did a fine job raising this soldier. It takes a special person to serve our country and special parents to build the kind of character into their son who grows up wanting to protect our country. You must have been so proud of him! Our thoughts and prayers are with you. He made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We will remember him always! May God bring you comfort.

Ted Stokes

June 11, 2007

My name is CPT Ted Stokes. I was Kile's Troop Commander in A/6-9 CAV. Kile was the most mature, caring, professional and talented junior officer I have had the privelege of working with in 14 years of service. It was truly my honor to have known him and I would pick no one else to be at my side while leading America's best young men into combat. Kile's loss is a devastating blow to each and every member of my command and my unit. He will be severly missed, but never forgotten and his actions and effect on every soldier he worked with will live on in the heart of everyone that knew him. Kile God bless you. To Kile's family and friends - nothing I can say can express to you my sympathies and regret for your loss. It was an honor to have worked with Kile and considered him my friend and I am a better man for having known him. I will keep each and every one of you in my prayers.

Respectfully,

Karl Phillips

Our lives have been blessed by meeting your son and the pleasure of his presents as a groomsmen at our daughters wedding on Sept.30,2006. Kile was such a gentleman, sweet, kind, full of life, strong and handsome. Indulging in conversation with interest and respect. What a wonderful young man to have accomplished so much in his lifetime on earth. As a parent our hearts morn with you and in my faith I know he is serving with our Lord. Kile's memory will live on forever to all that he has touched. God Bless his family and friends in the days to come.

To Kile's family: I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine the sorrow you are all feeling. My heart goes out to his friends and family. I do want to say I hate this war, I hate the fact it is taking so many soldiers but if it weren't for soldiers like your son our country wouldn't be what it is today . So, thank you Kile & family for your sacrifice and may God be with you in your time of need. Kile made the ultimate sacrifice and I'm certain he is in God's house now. God Bless you all.

Dear Grady, Melissa, and family,

My heart goes out to you at this very difficult time in your lives. Melissa and I were just talking recently about Eddie and Kile being over there and how ready we were for them to come home. I am so truly sorry for your loss, and I can only imagine the pain you must be feeling right now. It is so hard to go through losing someone so young, I do know about that, but just keep the faith and know that you are great parents and he was a great kid that grew up to be a great man. And as much as he is going to be missed, you know you will one day be re-united and that will keep you going. God just needed him right now a little more than we did. May you all find peace and comfort in knowing that Kile is with his Lord. Grady, that song you all used to sing "Going Over" keeps going through my mind, and i can just see Kile saying the same thing "when my given time expires, serving Jesus was my desire, i'm going over, no one can hinder me". Not only did he serve Jesus, but his country as well, and we will all be eternally grateful for his sacrifice. Eddie and his unit,
currently in Balad, Iraq, sends his love and condolences as well and wishes he could be here. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

We love you,
Stephanie Spretz-Webb
