Charles Browning Obituary

A Florence National Guardsman killed in Afghanistan last week was a gentle person and had a soldier's heart, friends and co-workers said Tuesday.

The Arizona Army National Guard announced Tuesday that Sgt. Charles Browning of the 158th Battalion was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in eastern Afghanistan. Browning leaves behind a wife and two stepdaughters.

Funeral services will be held on June 14 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson.

Browning, 31, served tours with the National Guard in Panama and Korea before heading to Kuwait in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Staff Sgt. David Swingle of California served with Browning in Kuwait from Oct. 2004 to Jan. 2006. “We're going to miss a great soldier,” Swingle said. “He was willing to go the extra mile for anyone he knew.”

Browning volunteered for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. His squad was deployed from Gilbert to Fort Bragg, N.C., in January before heading to Afghanistan in March. The 158th Battalion provides security to coalition and American forces in the eastern portion of Afghanistan.

“Sgt. Browning was a great soldier, patriot, and family man, and friend to many,” said Army Maj. Gen. David Rataczak, Adjutant General of the Arizona National Guard, in a prepared statement.

The National Guard also announced Tuesday that Browning was posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

Browning also worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections in the Special Management Unit, which houses death row inmates and gang members, said Katie Decker, a spokesperson for the corrections department.

"Like the military, there is a sense of brotherhood in corrections. These guys care about each other," Decker said.

Decker added that more than 100 corrections department employees are currently serving in the military, more than 70 are on standby, and about a quarter are veterans.

Swingle said Browning taught his fellow soldiers handcuffing techniques he learned from his time in corrections in case they ever needed to detain someone during combat.

"He loved training his soldiers on different tactics," he said.

Browning was born in Whidbey Island, Wash., and spent much of his childhood in Tucson, graduating from Palo Verde High School, before enlisting. Decker said Browning was "a soldier through and through."

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Charles R. Browning US Army Staff Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Charlie, we went to high school together and were very close junior year. You loved music and played guitar and skate boarded around until getting a yellow truck. I remember your sister and her baby. Daniel had a new drum set. IT WAS LOUD. Your mom was going to school to be a librarian. She made apple pie from scratch once and I have never had a better slice of pie to this day. Once we got pictures together in a photo booth at park mall. I still have them. I still have chips from your skateboard. Whenever I hear Social Distortion I think of you. I thought of you when my son got his first Mohawk (age 3). I'm so sorry that we didn't keep in touch. Over the years I've often wondered about how your life was turning out. I'm sad to learn that it ended early. I'm 45 now and never stopped remembering you. I promise to never stop remembering you.

Charlie, we were buddies in sixth grade at Holliday in Tucson...we both had a crush on a girl named Beth...I didn't know you as an adult, but I can hear and see that you made a difference in the world. I'm sorry I didn't get to know you as grown men, but your memory will be honored. I was an infantry Marine...served from 2000-2004 in Golf Co. 2dBn 3rdMAR. I've been a firefighter/EMT my whole adult life...working for the USAF as a civilian Fire Inspector now and my wife is active duty in the USAF, we will remember you...just want to say hi to your mom Trilby and your brother Daniel. I'll always cherish the friend I knew way back when. I'll tell the guys at the firehouse up here at JBER about you. Semper Fi, Til Valhalla Brosef.

Not a Memorial Day goes by that I don't take a few moments and think about SSG Browning and his family. I served with him at Mehterlam and am a retired LEO to boot. I know he had my back, his fellow soldiers and airmen knew he had theirs too. A WARRIOR. Gone but not forgotten.

SSG. Browning, today I was thinking of you, after all, that's what today is all about. You were more than a friend and brother, you were a mentor. We were deployed together in Qatar, and you always had some words of wisdom, especially when i denied my promotion to E-5. You esplained to me how all E-5 when first promoted, was a learning experiance, and I should have at least tried. On numerous occasions you tried to get me to work at the jail with you, you said "Frank, you would be perfect as a corrections officer", you were always looking out for me, and others before yourself. I am proud to have served with you, and honored to be your friend. I still have the video that was made for one of the Generals from Qatar that has us in it. I look at it from time to time. I show my kids and explain to them who you are and what you meant to me. I just got back off leave when I heard what happen, I was in Iraq, but I said a prayer for you and your family. Me and my family send our condolences to Lisa and the kids, he talked about you often, and couldn't wait to be home with you, and to go rock crawlin. lol Charles, today is your day, today is the day that we remember our fallen brothers and say thank you for all you have done for us. Your words still inspire me to this day.

He was a great man filled with so much knowledge when it came to the military he was the guy to go too. I learned a lot from him. Although I was in Afgahn with him we did deploy to Qatar together. i was apart of his squad. I can say that I do think about him and that I miss him. It's August 3,2009. I was at Fossil Creek today(up by Payson) diving in a pool with snorkel gear and saw something on the bottom half buried in the sand. It was a worn, black metal KIA bracelet with SSG Charles Browning's name on it. I brought it up to the surface, looked at it and was struck by the importance of what i had just found and started to cry. No Wuss here.... I am a prior service Marine, my son IS a Marine, and my Father was an Air Force Fighter Pilot KIA in Vietnam. Came home and looked Charles up. I will wear this bracelet forever I think......

Hi Charlie -

Its me again. Its hard to believe that its almost two years since we lost you. There is a void that will never be filled in our hearts. I am proud to call you brother. Most people just work together, but you and I, as well as the members of your unit understand a deeper connection.

I found pictures a couple of months ago - video actually, from Mikey's 1st birthday. Can you believe he is already 4?? Mikey still holds that Teddy Bear you picked up for him when you went to DM. We finally came up with a name for him - Charlie. Rest in Peace brother. Thank you for your sacrifice. It is because of you and all who defend our freedom, that we live in the best country in the world. THANK YOU Charlie.

As the holidays were drawing nearer, I was preparing to travel back to Texas to see my wife and girls since I am still in AZ working within the 1-158th BN. I was waiting in the airport and I picked up the USA Today and I came across the most interesting article. The article was about a website that was put together for Fallen Heroes, YOU!
Never forgetting a Fallen Hero, especially one that I served with, I thought this would be a great place to reflect.
I can't say as though I had really spent much time around you or with you except the occasional chat in the chow hall; however, the day you became a Fallen Hero, I remember all to well.
As all Memorial Day's come and go, you are a True Hero, SSG Browning! In Remembrance, SSG Renaud

I miss you bud... You were the picture of what a soldier is - a hero and protector - no matter how dangerous the mission. May God watch over you in Heaven - and we will all be back together someday.

Hey sgt, its middles. I just wanted you to know that we miss you so much, i cant speak for the rest of the squad but there was a hudge part of me that was lost that mornin that i will never get back. Every day i think of that morning you woke me up and said "i know you just got to sleep, but get up we have one more mission. This is what it is all about running missions all day and night running into the next day. Get up middles only a couple of hours more than you can go back to sleep." After you woke up the whole squad we were standing out side by the humvee's you started karate choping all of us to wake us up and smile cause we were all pissed off. That made that morning before we left a little bit better. Even still with you gone, still to this day your charm, personality, knowledge and heart, has an inpack on me everyday.
Sgt you will always be missed, But you will never be forgotten.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences and gratitude for the sacrifices made by SGT Browning and his family. SGT Browning was one of the first Soldiers I met in D Co 1st 506th IN at Camp Greaves Korea. During that year SGT Browning worked as a gunner in my section. We both PCSd to Fort Campbell KY and were assigned to D Co 3rd 187th IN. These two units are extremely rich in history, and the Soldiers that make up these units have huge shoes to fill from Soldiers that came before them. When SGT Browning left these units, those shoes were a little bit bigger for the Soldiers that came after him. Because like the Currahee Mountain that represents the 506th, SGT Browning was a mountain of a man. He also could Stand Alone with his values and was comfortable with that. He was an excellent example for peers and superiors alike to follow. At Fort Campbell he lived up to the motto of Let Valor Not Fall with every deed and action. He was truly an inspiration to all that he met and worked with. I am certainly proud and honored to have worked with such a high caliber Soldier and thankful to have my life touched by this incredible human being. SGT Browning, thank you, for being you.

Dear Browning Family:

We never met your hero, but are deeply saddened by his passing. We are a troop of Brownie Scouts in Glendale and had "adopted" Sgt. Brownings company as a dear friend of our leader was serving with him. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this horrible time. God Bless you All- thank you for your service, Sargeant.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the entire Browning family, my husband and I did not personally know Charles only thru our son who is also serving and is at this time in the same unit. We can not imagine the loss you are now feeling and will continue to feel, our desire is that the Lord takes you in his loving arms and comforts you in this time of sorrow. Our faith teaches us that we live in eternity and those that go before us prepare a place for us, it seems that was the kind of person Charles is always looking out for his family, I say this because I feel that he is with you watching over you all, continuing to make sure you will always be out of harm's way. The service and sacrifice Charles and you his family have made could never be measured or expressed by mere words, we can only hope that it might bring you some small comfort to know that Charles and you his family are loved and will be continued to be in our prayers.

Respectfully,
Mr & Mrs Manuel Spry Sr.

I did not know Sgt. Browning and that is my loss. He served his community with honor as a Corrections Officer, working in a very dangerous occupational setting; and then lost his life as a proud member of the National Guard as honorably he served his country. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Father we entrust our brother Charles to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Charles in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

To the Family of Sgt. Browning,

Please find comfort in the loving memories of your husband, father, son, and brother. I know his comrades will remember him as a brave and dedicated soldier. My son, Lt. Robert Samuel, was his platoon leader, and he is hurting knowing that he could not bring him home safely to you.

He made the ultimate sacrifice, and you did, also. Thank you.
