Daniel McCall Obituary

UntitledSGT. DANIEL L. MCCALL
1982-2007

Sgt. Daniel L. McCall, age 24, was killed in action, October 30, 2007 while serving his country in Salmen Pak, Iraq.
Daniel was a 2001 Pace High School Honor graduate and had many friends. Daniel was very athletic and held numerous track records, many of which still stand. He was loved by all who met him and his smile would brighten up a room the moment he entered. He never complained or had a negative comment to say about anyone.
Daniel enlisted in the United States Army June 2004, following in his grandfather "Duke's" footsteps, as he is a retired Vietnam Army Veteran. He was assigned to Ft. Benning, GA, for completion of Basic Training and Airborne School. Daniel was transferred to Ft. Bragg, NC, for Special Forces Training. It was at Ft. Bragg that Daniel met the love of his life, Brittnay, whom he married in April of 2006. Sgt. McCall eventually returned to Ft. Benning to serve with the 3rd Infantry Division and was deployed to Iraq in March 2007. Sgt. McCall's accomplishments while serving his country include: Combat Life Savers Training, Sniper School, Warrior Leaders Course, Airborne School and Special Forces Training. Daniel's medals for service are the Purple Heart, Parachute's Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, ARCOM, AGCM, NDSM, ICM, GWTSM, and ASR.
Daniel will always be remembered by his beloved family; his wife, Brittnay McCall, Columbus, GA; his loving mother, Petra McCall, Macon, GA; grandparents, Marvin "Duke" and Liane McCall, of Pace, FL; two uncles, Dr. Robin (Dr. Donna) McCall, of Picayune, MS, and Billy McCall of Alvarado, TX; and his mother-in-law, Ms. Susan Koning, of Holland, MI.
Funeral services for Sgt. McCall will be 11:30AM, Thursday, November 8, 2007, at West Milton Church of Christ, with Minister Mike Mefford officiating.
Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, aboard Pensacola N.A.S., at 2:00PM, with LEWIS FUNERAL HOME of Milton directing.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00PM, Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at West Milton Church of Christ, in Pea Ridge.

Daniel once said his heroes were

"Never, Never, Never Quit"-

To the family of Daniel McCall, My name is Bill Barnes and I am a civil service employee at Ft. Stewart Georgia. I grew up in Pace and graduated from Pace in 1982. The reason I'm writing this today is because my organization recently published a request for Warriors Walk Adopt-a-Tree Program and I wanted to see if anyone from Pace was on this list and there I found Daniel's tree. Being a 20 year veteran, I honor those who served like myself and were unfortunately was taken away from their families due to their military service and committment. So I felt compelled and I have chosen his tree to maintain in his honor and for your family. Ill insure that it stands above the rest. Thank you, Bill Barnes

Dorothy, I just read your comments and I am so moved by what you did. It is so important to the family and friends that we never forget. What your local support group did is a wonderful way to keep our soldiers close in our hearts and minds. Sgt. Daniel McCall is a true hero. I am a childhood friend of his mother Petra. Our fathers served together and we grew up together, our sons served together although they never knew each other. I know when Petra reads your comments it will warm her heart. Thank you. Thank you.

Our local support group for parents of Marines had a run/walk for our heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our beloved country. I was given the sheet of paper with the name of Sgt.Daniel L. McCall, and I walked with his name in my hand and his memory in my heart. God bless Sgt. McCall, and I pray that his family and friends find comfort knowing that he is in the hearts of many who realize the sacrifices that our young men and women in the armed forces face each day. Sgt. McCall is an American hero, and he will always be in my heart and prayers. Semper Fidelis.

As so often happens, I lost track of Daniel over a year and a half ago, and heard from him only once after he made his move from NC to FL. He and I went to basic training together, as well as over a year of the following training. Daniel was principled, stubborn, proud and strong, a soldier who was aware of the often thankless job we do day to day, but more than up to the task. He was a good friend, a riot to be around off-duty, and I have no doubt a loving husband, son, and brother to his family who survives him. My heart goes out to you all - I am thunderstruck that he is gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Daniel, my love I still can not believe that you are gone. It just doesn't seem real. Some days I just want to think that you are still in Iraq, but then I realise that is not where you are, you are in a much better place. A place of peace and comfort. A place that I can not even imagine the beauty. I know that you are looking down on me in every second that passes by. I never thought this is where we would be. You were my soulmate, my everything and life didn't seem possible with out you. Marie called me about a week after I got the news that you had been killed, I didn't really talk then but she told me about the conversation you had with her about how strong I am. As sad as I was it put a smile in my heart to know that you thought so highly of me. She told me "Brit I think Daniel had that conversation with me for a reason, so that I could tell you one day what a strong and beautiful woman Daniel knew you were." Ashleigh would always tell me make sure you are smiling because Daniel wants you to smile and he wants to see you smile. Not many people know what it feels like to lose the love of your life, you friend, your soulmate, but there is a simple comfort in knowing that you are at peace and you are with me everyday. I hope you and Zoey are taking care of each other. I am so very proud of you. I miss you, I love you and carry you with me everyday. You are forever my love

To the McCall family,

Thinking of all our soldiers today.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

LORD, grant that I may seek....to comfort rather than to be conforted. To understand, rather than to be understood. To love, rather than to be loved. It has been many years since seeing Daniel, I heard he was there and my thoughts went back to my time, a mother fearful of his return, and I did-twice. Remembering Daniel and his mother I bowed my head, reverently asking for his safe return, as I did for my two sons from Iraq. Daniel is the first fallen soldier in Iraq known to me personally and I am deeply saddened
by his passing and my heart is with all that he loved.

Daniel and beloved family, I do not know you, I do not pretend to understand your grief, your tears, your pride. But, I am a friend of Tammy Dooley's, and we lost a soldier a few months ago. I do understand that the pain is unbearable. I know your son was treated with the utmost dignity and respect, I saw this first hand with Rhett. The soldiers around him knew they could depend on him and his sacrifice did not go unnoticed by those he served with, nor by the people who love this country. I pray your grief lessen but your memories never do. My love goes to you. Debbie Davis

I remember Daniel from Highschool. He used to sit behind me in class, and poke at me with a pencil...I remember making jokes with Daniel about Hockey...cause I had no clue what I was talking about, and he was laughing at me so much for it. He was such a sweet person. He was very talented, very smart, very funny and a genuine nice person. When I heard the news, I was devastated. I always thought highly of him. I pray for the McCall family, and want them to know, Daniel will be greatly missed.

I had the privelege of meeting Daniel when I was stationed in Pensacola, Florida through some mutual friends. A true class-act in my book. My respects go out to his family and friends. He is a true patriot and hero. May god bless you forever.

Very Respectfully,

Petty Officer First Class Mario Delacruz

There is discipline in A Soldier
you can see it when he walks,
There is honor in A Soldier
you hear it when he talks.
There is courage in A Soldier
you can see it in his eyes,
There is loyalty in A Soldier
that he will not compromise.
There is something in A Soldier
that makes him stand apart,
There is strength in A Soldier
that beats from his heart.
A Soldier isn't a title any man
can be hired to do,
A Soldier is the soul of that man
buried deep inside of you.
A Soldier's job isn't finished after
an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week,
A Soldier is always A Soldier
even while he sleeps.
A Soldier serves his country first
and his life is left behind,
A Soldier has to sacrifice what
comes first in a civilian's mind.
If you are civilian -
I am saying this to you.....
next time you see A Soldier
remember what they do.
A Soldier is the reason our land
is 'Home of the free',
A Soldier is the one that is brave
protecting you and me.
If you are A Soldier -
I am saying this to you.....
Thank God for EVERY SOLDIER
Thank God for what YOU do!

To Daniel's Family~~~ Thank you for being a Soldier and for giving us freedom.... you will forever be in my family's heart.
