CPL. DAVID P. MCCORMICK
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, America was attacked by enemies of freedom. David put aside his studies to answer the call of his country to fight a war against terror and hatred. He joined the Army because he was firmly committed to the service of our nation and he wanted to safeguard our liberties. He was serving in his second tour of duty and had just returned to Iraq after spending time at home with his family in early April.
While he was home he had applied and was accepted into the business school at Texas State University where he had hoped to attend next fall to study for a bachelor's degree in business and eventually obtain a masters degree in business administration. He also had dreams of continuing his service to his country by becoming a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.
David was a hero, and like so many others, his life was cut tragically short by forces of oppression, racism and hatred.
He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his loving mother, Anna June McCormick of Bay City.
He is also survived by a brother, Leo William McCormick III of San Diego; a sister and her husband, Kristy and Kelly Davis and nephew, Adam of Houston; another sister and her husband, Mary Ann and Danny Davis of Stafford; and an uncle and aunt, Robert and Carol Staten of Angleton.
A public visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8th from 6-8 p.m. at the Christian Ministry Center of the First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations be made in David's memory to The Youth ministry or The Scholarship Fund of First Baptist Church-Bay City or to the Military Pocket Testament Program of the Gideons International.
Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home, 979-245-4893.

Its always hard to find the words to write. Thats funny because just last month I was searching for this webpage. Well let me tell you about the last few years. Im a father of two now. My oldest is to smart for his own good. He catches on very fast, they both do. My youngest is one heck of a rock climber. You wouldn't think a 5 year old would enjoy climbing that much but he wants to be like dad. I got into climbing while working in Yosemite. I took my scout training and became a Park Ranger, after all who can read a map in the most remote spots in the country better than a scout. Not a tanker lol. Shooting guns and blowing things up was a lot of fun for a few years but searching for lost and injured hikers is much more rewarding. The last time I wrote you the short message I was living and working in Yosemite National Park. I have moved around to a few different parks but lately I am running the day to day operations of a brand new National Park in Tennessee. I love my job, I am able to continue serving and protecting my country by protecting our history, culture, and national treasures so that our great great grandchildren can enjoy them.
Mick I miss you brother. I miss sitting around talking to you. I have not forgotten you and I never will. I will see you at Fiddlers Green.

I have never been one to write or say things in the memory of our fallen comrades. I could never find the words to say what was always on my mind, and sadly enough it has taken me over 2 years to find the words to say. It was truely an honor to have had you in my Platoon during that deployment. I will never forget you and your friendly personality. To this day I still feel a high sense of responsibilty to your loss and constantly go back to the day you left our platoon....I will always wish to go back to that point in time. I wish I had fought harder to keep you in my Platoon. I just constantly feel that if I had fought harder to keep you in the Platoon then you would still be here with us today. To the family and parents of David I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.

Dear David,
We miss you. I miss you. Tons. More than I can say. I miss your contagious laugh, your brilliant smile, your own witty sense of humor...the sound of your voice on the phone...everything. I miss the quiet times too, just knowing you were there. I did not expect we'd be saying goodbye so soon. That wasn't supposed to happen until I was 85 or so, and then it would be me leaving first, and not much time to wait until you and Will and Mary joined me. This early parting did not follow my game plan at all. But of course, I'm not the One in Charge.
Mom always called us bookends, you and I, the oldest and the youngest of the family, who were so much alike in so many ways. I know how you would have felt about all this attention. I'm sorry about all of that. I know you would have preferred to leave this world the way that you preferred to move about in it--quietly slipping away without too much notice, without too much fuss. But it couldn't be that way this time. We couldn't let you go so quietly away from us when you have laid down your life so early, for the country you loved so much.
You were so brave. So proud to do your part. You never considered yourself a hero. You never knew you were brave. You just saw yourself as an ordinary guy who was doing what he could for freedom's sake. You served, and you served selflessly with distinction and pride. And that, baby bro, qualifies you as a hero.
I can't lie to you--losing you has hit hard. VERY hard. And it hurts. A LOT. But God promises He will never give us more than we can bear, and so I'm trusting that promise, and counting on God to get us all through this. I know He will. Just as I know He has you safely in the palm of His hand.
We know that you're early "graduation day", as Dr. Young calls it, is part of God's plan. He's made that very clear to us. He's been with us throughout our pain, feeling it with us, crying with us, comforting us with his Holy Spirit.
I know that I may never know why you were called home so soon. But I know there's a reason. God never does anything without a good reason, and I know He would never have taken you away from us if there wasn't a very good reason. So I'm trusting Him, knowing how much He loves you, loves us, loves all the world. His plans go way beyond your life and mine, and what we want for ourselves. Life is not all about us. And being a Christian does not mean we always get what we pray for, or that we will never suffer in this world. It does mean that we have hope--that death is not the end for those who love Christ. As you did. As we do.
There is no despair in our grief. There is only that deep longing to have you back again, and the aching pain of your absence from our lives henceforth on this earth.
David, in case you didn't know it, you were loved. You ARE loved, and we miss you. We will always miss you.
And so, with great reluctance, and with an aching, heavy heart that still can't quite grasp that you’re really gone, I say goodbye to you…for now. You did a good job here, bro. I’m proud of you. I love you. I miss you. And I can't wait to see you again.

As the mother, of a soldier serving in Iraq, I attended the service for your son, David, as an act of support to your family and a way to honor his sacrifice. The memorial service was beautiful, and it gave me insight into the brave hero who gave his all for the country he loved. I guess I expected all of those things. What I didn't expect was the patriotism and outpouring of love that was displayed along the route to the cemetery. I cried the whole way. I have never seen anything like that. Mile after mile the road was covered on both sides by thousands of people waving flags, displaying signs and holding their hand over their heart. It was a real confirmation to me that what our sons are doing, for their country, is appreciated. I thought of your family, ahead of me, and what pride you must have been feeling. I hope that helped a little to ease the pain in your heart.
When I spoke to my son, on the phone, I relayed to him what I had seen. He was also surprised and very touched.
Your family remains in my prayers and I would like to thank you for raising such a wonderful young man who loved his God and his country so much. May God bless you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,

I am so sorry to hear of your terrible loss. My heart breaks for you. My son is also based on FOB Loyalty. He is a Medic with the 10th Mtn Div, out of Fort Polk, LA. He did not know your son, but he lost a friend in the same attack. He was so upset when he called me today. Every soldier is a part of the same family over there. I feel such a strong connection to your family and I am grieving with you. I live nearby in Richmond, and I am available for any help you might need. If you need to just talk, please contact me. Your entire family is being covered by my prayers. May God help you through this horrible nightmare.
