Hey Corey, sorry it took me so long to write, but i just wanted to write and let you know that you´re on my mind almost every day. I regret that I couldn´t save you and that you didn´t get to come home with us or live your life to be an old man. I want you to know that I´m living my life in your honor. I now have four kids, a son and three daughters who I love dearly. Your sacrifices will always be remembered, and I will share your story with my children so they understand the bravery that brought us home safely that day in Iraq. Although we didn´t have much time together and had our differences at first, I know you were a good person who aimed to do your best. I remember that day of clearing the roads, facing many roadside bombs, and how you took charge of everything we called out. You will always be my hero and battle buddy, and I promise to live my life to the fullest in your memory. Rest in peace, brother. I believe we will meet again someday.

P.S. Thank you.

After ten years, your name still rings in my memory. You were a student aide for me in my first full year of teaching. You desperately wanted the position and you were such a determined little guy, how could I say no? You always knew the military life was for you and I bring you up almost on a daily basis with my students. I have a "Corey Hicks" chair that bears your name, and it is for you whenever you feel like visiting. You will forever have a place in my class and in my heart.

Hey kid. Long time. I think about you every day...partially because I never told you I was sorry. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about you- You probably already know that. You were the greatest guy. You were so goofy, funny, spontaneous. I remember first meeting you in 8th grade and adopting you as my little brother. Little did I know a year later we would meet again and you'd move high schools for me. You were so passionate about everything you did. I miss you something terrible. I never got to tell you that and this probably isn't any better, but if there is a way to let you know I'm sorry for everything, I am. I love you to death and always will. I hope where ever you are, you're happy, ok and joking around.

Well. I guess time has come for me to face what has happened. Corey bro.....well this is Q. or SSG Q. I was your recruiter for the army. I dont know how to begin to say I am so sorry for the loss that your Family has endured. I know I should have wrote a long time ago. I still have the last thing you wrote me in my email. how you were just about to graduate Basic training on the 17th of Jan which is your birthday. You were going to be heading to Ft Hood and you had a great time on Exodus leave. I remember you wanting me to go running with you during your vacation but we both got busy with other things. I know when you passed I was out doing recruiting things and your mother had come to the office....Ma'am...I am so sorry for not being there when your son and your family needed it the most. I know when I came back to the office that day, my station commander asked if I knew Corey and I was all happy and said yeah. he told me you came into the office and looked for me. I told to head to downtown phoenix and talk to the CSM(Command Sergeant Major) when I got there he had told me what happened. I didnt want to believe it that Corey was gone and it was my fault for putting him in the army. I apologize for my role in your Loss. I hope and pray your entire family can forgive me. I am currently in Afghanistan right now....doing a job for the army. I just want you to know that I am doing my best to make his name proud and doing everything I can to make sure no more soldier lives are lost. once again...I know this is late. but I am so sorry. Corey was not just a contract to me. I actually enjoyed his company and had a relationship with him. He will always be my SOLDIER and Brother. and I will never forget him. On this I swear. God Bless you all and Please forgive me for my part.

The Marine Corps League has created a Memorial scholarship for Corey at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. To help complete the scholarship his father, Russel Hicks shot buffalo near Devils Tower Wyoming for a raffle.

The scholarship is by lottery to keep the name of Corey alive. There is no grade point, no resume or financial statement. Any student may apply.

Tickets for half a buffalo raffle are $2 or 3 tickets for $5. The drawing is April 1st. Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship program may send a check to:

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I was Corey's 6th grade teacher at Washington Elementary School. After talking with a friend today, I learned that Corey had been killed in Iraq. This has hit me very hard. Corey is my first student who has been killed in this war. I clearly remember Corey in my class. He was funny, bright and creative. I am so sad to discover what has happened. My husband was in Iraq Dec. 2003 - Feb. 2004 and I had a front row seat to the worry and fear of having a loved one in the war.
Thank you Corey for your bravery and sacrifice. I will never forget your 12 year old little face and your smile. You will forever be remembered and honored in my heart. Thank you to Corey's family..his life touched many people.

To the family and parents of Corey I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
Proud Parents of SFC Brent A. Adams, KIA, 12/1/05, Ramadi, Iraq

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Corey, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Pvt. Corey L. Hicks, you are a true hero. Thank you for your part in protecting us all.

Mom & Father Settle

May 29, 2008

To Corey our Son our hero, when you told us you were going into the Army we were not thrilled with the idea. But it was something that you wanted to do and we could not change your mind. For that we are sorry. When you called almost every day we could tell how much you enjoyed what you were doing and how much you enjoyed being with your new Army family.

Even while you were there in combat you were thinking of how not to upset your Mom, you would call me and talk about your fire fights and would not tell her unless I was there to comfort her. We know you joined to make us proud of you and you did we are so proud of you, we never thought we would have a war HERO in our family but we do!

When the two Army officers showed up at our front door on May 2nd we were certian the news was not good but we did not even think it would be that unbearable.
It broke both or our hearts into pieces and it still feels like some are missing. Words can not even explain the way we feel, its like we wake up everyday and a part of us is missing and will never return. Until we see you again one day, we will love and miss you forever son. Jesus has a gunner to protect heavens gates.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I was PVT Hicks Senior Drill Sergeant while he was going through Basic Combat Training at Fort Knox, KY. It is a sad day for all of us that wear the uniform and the flag on our shoulder. He was an outstanding Soldier, and even a better man.
