My Darling Angel Son...Time has not taken the loss of you and made it easer to understand the loss that war makes on so many peoples. You didn't care about the politics...you cared about your men and the missions assigned to you. You never would have considered yourself a hero, and just doing your duty. I know you are taking care of your duties in heaven too...I love you darling and miss your spirit of life in this world,we will be together again and I can see your smile everytime I close my eyes and call your name...Always, Momma

My Darling Son, a new year is upon us and I can say that there are a few blessing that I have come to hold dear...time and consideration brings personal knowledge, you are always in my spirit, and thank God we live in the United States of America. Each of these reflections help me to find peace about the loss of your spirit and smiles...I know that you are not in pain, safe at last, and with the highest power of all. Knowing you, they made you a escort at the gates to help others get the "Swing In Their Wings." You would tell all, "Its just like repelling; except there is no landing." I Love you more than mere words would ever do you justice. You are my Angel Boy Always. Love Momma

I just found out about Donnie through a mutual friend. My name is SSG Jason Howlett. Donnie and I were Privates together in HI. Donnie even as time goes by my memory of you is still strong. I was blessed by marrying your sister, but it turned out to be a package deal. I got a brother in the process. It has took me along time to write. The idea of you not being around is still unbelieveable. Austin and Dallas still cry at the thought of you not being around. Hailey misses you terribly but she knows that you and Rhonda are together once again looking over all of us. I am a better person for having had you in my life. I know you were following your destiny as we all must. I watched you become a man. And i must say you were the kind of man all parents should hope their kids will be. You blessed our lives. God Bless You My Brother.

Donnie, my son I miss you so very much. You would have turned 30 on the 14th...but you lived a life that far exceded your years. Every day is bittersweet, I am blessed by having you and knowing you for the time we were given togeather, and laid bare in my soul for you every day we are physically apart. We will be together again in time and place. You are never out of my thoughts and love son...see ya on the flip side, darling. Momma

Donald, soon it will be a year that you will have left God's earth for higher ground. The death of a child is something you never get over so please let your parents know that you are now ok. God has a way of giving us signs when we're still and I pray that God has allowed those signs to come to your parents and family. As a Gold Star Mother I know the pain of the death of a child. I also know that it's not the death we remember but the life you lived and loved. May that life be celebrated and remembered forever.

Your parents aren't alone and there are many who are there for them. If they ever want to talk to others who have gone through the death of a child or loved one in active duty please do contact me.

May God continue to provide His love and comfort to your family and friends.

It is closing in on the 6 month mark of your physical vessel's death. I have learned alot about "living-in-the-moment;however, I am just begining the journey of cherising my past, because you gave everything you could to life and living... through out your life...some memories are bittersweet, but always a blessing... to reach inside and be warmed by your spirit. We are one, always and forever. Happy Valentine's Day, Darling, Momma

You were a great officer, who always led your men from the front. In our time working togather in Afghanistan, the men of ODA 0116 owed you much. You fought alongside us and we cherished the time that we had with you and consider ourselves so privileged to have known and worked with you.

Dear family of Donnie Carwile,
While the rest of us lost a great soldier you have lost you loved one who is so irreplacable. I lost my son and know the devasation. Your faith will give you strength and time will give you some peace. The loss never leaves but the pain becomes less intense. Please love yourself and know now that his happiness is that you go on and carry on his goal of making the world a better place.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Donald, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hey girl, you know how much donnie meant to my husband and me and you and the girls as well. there are no words to express the sympathy i feel and the pain in my heart for you and what you are going thru. donnie was such a loving man and such a wonderful friend and i know that you were the center of his world and that had it not been for you he would not have been able to guide and lead our guys the way he did. he always knew that you were behind him in every decision that he made and i think that is what gave him the determination and ability to be the man he was. i feel so much better knowing that i have him watching over shons back now that he is with god and i know that he is consistently watching over you. parents always think that their children are angels but now donnie really is and everybody is safer with him there because as he protected and watched over our boys he is still doing it and heaven is more beautiful and a better place with him in gods presence. i love you, and shon and i are always here for you, you are our family now and i dont ever want you to forget that. luv ya girl and give the girls a kiss for me. robyn haskins

My dearest little brother,
Today, I stood here at the fire station as the flag was lowered to half staff with all my firefighters around and tears poured down my face. I guess partly because of the pride that I feel for you and your sacrifice but also in my own sadness and pain that I will never lay eyes on you or tell you that I love you or hear you tell me that you love me, again. I will always keep you in my heart. There are so many things I still want to say and so many things I wanted to see you do. But all in all, Donnie, I AM proud of you and WE WILL NEVER FORGET!
I Love You!

My deepest heart felt condolences in your family's loss.

Lt. Carwile and, my son, Pfc. Conlon will live on in our hearts forever. My son had great admiration and respect for Lt. Carwile. Paul often wrote about their pranks and the guidance that Lt. Carwile would give him.

They were cut from the same cloth. Lt. Carwile worried and cared for his men; my son was always saying and writing about taking care of his brothers and they were taking care of him. They had a deep rooted need to care for and protect the weak and the innocent. They were our Hero all their lives.

While I didn’t know Lt. Carwile personally, I felt I had through my sons writings and stories.

It brings me comfort knowing they are together looking down on us.

All my love.

Donald, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Donald and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Carwile family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Donald and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free

I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor

Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him...I am convinced that
neither death nor life,
niether angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers,
neither height nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation will able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Jennifer,
May God be with you in these trying times. He will truly be misssed

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1Lt Donald Carwile our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Don. And to Don it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Don, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Don’s family and loved ones.

Are not worth comparing with the glory
That shall be revealed in us."

Dear Jennifer,
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers daily. I am deeply moved by the courage, honor, loyalty and discipline Donnie gave for our country in exchange for his own life. It amazes me to think of the many sacrifices Donnie made for our country and for his beautiful family. I saw this somewhere and found it fitting:

A Soldier isn't a title any man
can be hired to do,
A Soldier is the soul of that man
buried deep inside of you.
A Soldier's job isn't finished after
an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week,
A Soldier is always A Soldier
even while he sleeps.

May God comfort you in the upcoming days and weeks. I love you, Jennifer

A Soldier's Prayer

God our Father,
Help me to remain true to my ideals
during my service to my country.
Help me be what is in America,
the land of the free.
May I realize that I represent
what our country stands for.
My uniform is a symbol of duty and valor
both in peace and in war.
I take up arms to defend what all Americans hold dear:
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Grant me the strength to live according to these ideals,
the courage of my convictions, and the resolve to endure whatever dangers threaten.
With you at our side I fear no evil
and resist every enemy,
secure in the knowledge
that you hold me in the palm of your hand.
Amen.

We do not know each other, but my heart aches for you in the sad loss. I SO MUCH APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICE that he made for our country. His accomplishments show how much he loved his family and his country. This thanks cannot justify what he has given.
Much love to each of you.
