Michael, soon it will be a year that you will have left God's earth for higher ground. The death of a child is something you never get over so please let your parents know that you are now ok. God has a way of giving us signs when we're still and I pray that God has allowed those signs to come to your parents and family. As a Gold Star Mother I know the pain of the death of a child. I also know that it's not the death we remember but the life you lived and loved. May that life be celebrated and remembered forever.
Your parents aren't alone and there are many who are there for them. If they ever want to talk to others who have gone through the death of a child or loved one in active duty please do contact me.
May God continue to provide His love and comfort to your family and friends.

Michael, It's hard to believe it's been six months since the day we got the news that you were gone. You would be proud of your family, they've dedicated their lives to honoring you and keeping you alive in their hearts and actions. You are a true hero, I know. The little boy I used to give M&M's to when he came to work with his Dad grew up to be an incredibly brave and honorable young man. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Thank you is not enough.

Ida, Pedro and Troy Please accept my deepest sympathies. Mike worked for me at Shop-Rite and was always full of life and fun to be around. I remember when Mike first decided to join the army he was on a mission and no one could talk him out of his decision. I wrote to Michael during boot camp and he was so very proud of all of his accomplishments and so very proud of his choice to serve. I am very lucky to have known him.

Most of our experiences with Michael revolved around our kids Matthew and Cory who were lifelong friends with Michael and Troy. While Cory and Troy were inseparable as best friends, Michael was a little older then Matthew so we did not see him as much. However, we always heard about Michael. We heard the secret whispers between the kids about some plan to do something “fun” in the neighborhood, with Michael the ring leader. Whenever I had interactions with Michael, (and now I know I am dating myself!) he always was very polite and respectful but with a sparkle in his eye that said he was up to something, like Eddie Haskell form the old “Leave it to Beaver” show. But no matter what the kids did, they always came back home smiling and laughing from an afternoon of just “being boys.”
As we moved away from the neighborhood just a couple months before 9/11, I received most of my reports of Michael’s doings through get togethers with Pedro and Ida. Suddenly this wild little boy was turning into a focused young man. First came the job at a very young age, not just to have something to do, but because Michael had a goal, he wanted a car, and he would do what it took to achieve it. Then he wanted to transform himself from that thin lanky little boy I remembered into a muscular substantive young man, and he went full force, with dedicated exercise and diet. Finally, his teenage goals all set AND achieved he had set his mind already on his adult life; he would be a police officer. But he would not just fill out an application and hope; he would join the Army, serve his country and be rewarded when he returned as an honored policeman.
On one hand it is ironic that the little boy who liked to create mischief as a child would one day go on to serve as a force of good, of order in Iraq, and a desire to serve the same community he once played in as a public servant, sworn to protect the children who now played on the same streets he once did. However, upon reflection, it all makes complete sense. Michael did not do anything “just to do it.” We live in a time where many youth walk around like zombies either deaf to the world on their IPods’ or blind to their obligations with their Xbox. Michael did not choose this path. Michael chose to live his life. Making goals and achieving every one he set. In the end, every person who he met, remembered Michael, because he was someone who forced you to live life or move on. Michael’s life stands as a testament to his parents, as it was they who instilled in him a burning desire to live life with a passion. Most importantly, his life stands as an inspiration to Troy, to make the most of every moment, every opportunity and to find passion in his life no matter what he chooses to do.
While Michael may not have lived as long as many of us may, we should ALL strive to fill our lives as fully and passionately as Michael did in his.

To the Gonzalez family:
The oupouring of tributes and kind words I continue to hear about Michael gives witness to the fact that he touched the lives of so many students and staff, and that he clearly was a special young man.
At a time when his tragic death must be especially hard to bear, I hope you will take some small solace in the fact we are keeping Mike in our thoughts and prayers. I can assure you that his life has had and will continue to have a positive impact on all who knew him and I applaud your efforts to advocate for the continued treatment and care of his fellow soldiers. I hope we can all pay lasting tribute to your son through our own efforts in making the community he cared so deeply about a better place.
God Bless you all.

I remember Michael as a child, He was so happy and very funny. We got to show him Arizonia and introduced him to our two grandchidren. Tony, my husband loved to tease him. He thinks about Michael and often talks about how he was as a little guy. We followed his childhood with conversions and pictures from his mother.We were amazed at how big he got and proud of what he accomplished with his life. We loved him very much for he was the son of Ida and Pedro who we loved as well. He was a role model to his brother Troy. We were in shock to hear about his death, It seemed like a bad dream and we will forever miss him. I know that Michael is in a better place and God will love and watch over him. I also know that we will all meet again in Gods kingdom and pray that this will bring comfort to his family.

Hey Mikey,
It's Rick's mom, I'll never forget our conversation at GNC, about how mad you were that almost everyone else in your unit was being deployed, except for you and Rick. You both couldn't wait to go - made me crazy! For two guys that never knew each other until your paths crossed at Ft, Mommouth, I couldn't believe how much alike you both were - from having the same type of personalities - to Mustangs - to having mothers the same (young) age ~ lol ~ and everything in between! Braveheart is what comes to mind - You are a HERO and inspiration to so many!!!
I try to look at Life as a Journey ~ the only things that really matter are your family, friends and the people that you meet along the way... some stay close no matter what, and Micheal, you will live forever in our hearts - we all miss you :(
To my new friend Ida, I love you like a sister, call me anytime ~ I'm here for you, we've got some gallons of coffee to go through!!!
May God Bless you and keep you strong

My dear friends Ida, Pedro and Troy, we had some great memories in NC with Michael. The massive waves, swimming with the boards, campfires and special moments nobody can ever take away from us. Michael always brought us joy, laughter and excitement. He was always looking to do something, go somewhere, didn't want to miss out on anything, he enjoyed life to its fullest. We thank God for the times we had and someday, I believe, we will all be back together again. Much love for you all, the Strommen family.

To Pedro, Ida, Troy, Abuelo, Abuela, Tiffany and all who loved Michael,
There is a picture in my daughter's Precious Moments bible that shows a gate that says, "heaven" with an angel on one side and a little girl with tears in her eyes on the other. The caption over the picture is, "No Tears Past the Gate." I can't help but think of the verse in Revelation 21:4 that says, "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." That is where Michael is. Though we cry, one day God will wipe our tears away as well. We can take comfort in that.
With love,

When I had Mike as a Graphics student, he wasn't outstanding. He'd come to class late sometimes and he didn't always get all his work done. But one thing that stood out about Mike as my student was that he understood what the class was about - that he could come in and be a little creative, have a little fun and express himself... HE GOT IT! Not many of my students get this about my classes, so I appreciate that he did.
My story about Mike is that he was constantly eating, always walking in with food or talking about food. he would even make fun of himself sometimes about it. One time, he ordered several pizzas for lunch and had them delivered to the school for himself and his table. There were no rules about having food delivered, so there were no objections - he just wanted pizza, so he ordered it!
For one project in class he had to set up a photo shoot of himself for a "fake" Rolling Stone magazine cover. He chose the subject of food and took a photograph of himself wearing a big "M&M" costume, holding a pizza box. He placed that image into a background of a pizza shop and even turned the Rolling Stone masthead into art by placing an image of a pepperoni pizza into it. I still use it as an example of how to get the project done and have fun at the same time.
Mike's sense of humor will be missed by all. It is a truly tragic loss for anyone who knew him, but also for those who had yet to meet him.

Each and every student on the field trip stopped by Michael's name plate at the War Memorial Theater in Trenton to pay their respects. Each student and teacher there, regardless of whether they knew Michael peronsonally, spontaneously acknowledged and honored Michael's legacy without prompting. It was a nice sight to see.

In Memory of Michael ~ (Debra Estep)
November 24, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod,
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

I served three months with SPC Gonzalez with the 340th. Though I didn't know him for a long time the conversations we did have were about family. He talked with a genuine smile on his face and you could tell he was tracking on his life and going to make something of himself someday. He was an Honorable man who would make his family proud. He stood by the Army values and was a team player. He had a great attitude and his commonsense lead others to want to follow in his footsteps. He was well liked by everyone and a Soldier to admire. He will be missed always.

This is SGT Scott who was SPC Gonzalez's team leader in Iraq and was with him at the tragic moment. I am just trying to do everything I can to honor him and his amazing family who I had the privilege to meet, unfortunately under these circumstances. Gonzo, as alot of us called him, was an amazing soldier and was the best gunner I have ever worked with. He had achieved that goal by working hard and learning as much as he could. I am so glad and also saddened that he and I had started to grow so much closer in the few weeks prior to Aug 28 and that he had really proven himself to me and everyone else around us. I am going to miss him and think about him and honor him for the rest of my life.

Gonzo.. We miss you soo much here. I still remember when the 1SG brought us into the chapel that day. It hurt soo much knowing that we lost a brother. Your always going to be our brother. A 1st PLT Shocker. I painted a mural for you on the wall outside your room door. Alex picked the quote out. We know now that everytime we go out on missions, we have another angel watching over all of us. We miss you & love you soo soo sooooooooo much. Rest in peace. <3

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

To The Family of SPC Gonzalez:
I am deeply saddened by the loss of your son, along with his fellow soldiers here in Iraq. I had the pleasure of serving with your loved one, and I can say that he is truly missed. Not a day goes by over here when someone does not mention "Gonzo." He was a kind person who could always put a smile on your face.
He loved being in Iraq, and serving his country. I know he died for what he believed in. He was an excellent soldier who was always ready to give a helping hand to others.
I have many fond memories of 'Gonzo,' that I will never forget. May he rest in peace. Godspeed Gonzo.

I would like to say that I am deeply sorrowed by the lost of SPC Gonzalez. I had the opportunity of serving with this Soldier. I am currently an NCO in the 430th MP DET. I remember when SPC Gonzalez came to me for the first time and kept saying, SGT I want you to put me on the list to deploy. Several times, he was not needed. He called me daily (almost to the point I had to ask him to just let me call him,lol) asking if there was any update on whether he could be put on a manifest or not. I remember the day I called him and said we need you to SRP. He was excited and was like, I'm ready to go SGT. He really actually did die for what he believed in and doing what he wanted to do. Of anything that I could say about this Soldier, Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez is that he was eager to serve the country and go on to protect overseas. That is very rare because there are Soldiers that only go, when their time has come not because of sheer desire. I want to say that it was an honor to know this Soldier and may his soul rest in peace. God Bless your family during your time of grief.

Michael, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Michael and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Gonzalez family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Michael and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!
