Robert Maloney Obituary

Fr. Robert L. Maloney, S.J. Fr. Robert Lawrence Maloney, longtime administrator at the University of San Francisco and former Provincial for Formation for the Jesuit California Province, died at the age of 78 on August 19, 2007 at Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was a Jesuit for 59 years and an ordained priest for 46 years. Bob was born in Santa Rosa, CA, on May 23, 1929. He grew up on the family farm in Fallon, a no longer extant hamlet in Northwestern Marin County. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Tomales High School. At the end of his freshman year at Santa Clara University, Bob entered the novitiate at Los Gatos on August 14, 1948. He completed philosophical studies at Gonzaga University and taught freshman English at the University of San Francisco, 1955-57. He then earned a M.S. in education at Fordham University in 1958. Theological studies were taken at Alma College, Los Gatos, and he was ordained a priest in St. Mary's Cathedral, San Francisco, on June 8, 1961. From 1963 to 1966 Bob pursued doctoral studies in education at the University of Michigan and began a long career as a teacher and administrator at the University of San Francisco. In 1968 Bob's work at USF was interrupted for a Jesuit administrative assignment. He served as Provincial of Formation for three years, responsible for the education and training of men preparing for the Priesthood and Brotherhood, at a time of great changes in the Church and society. He returned to the University of San Francisco in 1971, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. He was at various times Assistant Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean of the Evening College, and Director of the St. Ignatius Institute, a "Great Books" program within the University. Bob was known as an excellent teacher, popular with colleagues and students alike. His organizational abilities, perceptiveness and patient and sympathetic ear served him well in his various administrative roles. He was an extremely conscientious and apostolic priest, greatly devoted to the Society of Jesus. In his retirement, Bob kept up his lively interest in the liberal arts by his readings in literature, philosophy, and theology. For relaxation, he enjoyed jig saw puzzles, the more complicated the better. Bob is survived by his brother Michael Maloney of Petaluma; sister, Sr. Eleanore Maloney, SNJM of Los Gatos, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Vigil: 7:30PM, Tues., Aug. 28, at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, 300 College Ave., Los Gatos. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00AM, Wed., Aug. 29, at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center. Committal follows at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Sun., Sept. 9, 2:30PM at the Church of the Assumption, Tomales. Reception will follow at the Maloney Ranch, 1995 Gericke Rd., Petaluma.

Father Maloney was the epitomy of the life of Jesús Christ, here on earth. He administered the "Last Rights", to me twice. I loved him as a Father, as well as my shining example of "The Lord", here on earth. I will always love and respect him and keep my memories of our friendship close to my heart. I will always love my memories of him, as well as all the help he freely afforded me. Love forever, James J Perez..

Fr. Bob embodied our Lord Jesus Christ here on earth. He administered my Last Rights twice as I am a 44 year survivor of para-testicular metastatic cáncer. I firmly believe that I owe my life to him and my enduring belief of his work. He was more than a friend to me, he was an example of t'he teachings of Christ. I will always remember him for t'he example he showed me. I look forward to one day meeting him at the Gates of Heaven, and Will never fear any humán suffering. I love you, Fr. Maloney and will strive to be t'he best man that I can. James J. Perez..

I first met Fr. Maloney when I went to visit USF in the spring of 1994. He was the first priest I met on campus. He talked to me about SII and then gave me a personal tour of the campus. He was such a holy and special priest. You are missed Fr. Maloney.

As a student at USF when Fr. Maloney was made director of the St. Ignatius Institute, I had the good fortune both to work for him as my work-study supervisor and to depend upon him for academic counsel. What I remember most is a man who was absolutely dependable; he never missed an appointment or gave uncertain advice. Then, there was that ever-present smile that set everyone at ease in his presence. There was a casual elegance about Fr. Maloney that signaled the kingly aspect of the priesthood.

I first met Fr. Maloney when he was dean of the Arts and Sciences. I was unaware of his relationship to the SII. I remember him as very friendly and helpful in sorting out my scholastic predicaments and pointing me in the direction of good professors and fruitful classes. What struck me most about him was his memory! He could tell me who taught which class, for how many credits, with the course number, and which requirements it satisfied... without opening the class schedule.

When Fr Maloney became director of the SII, I rejoiced, because I knew how competent and friendly he was!

I had the good fortune to meet him briefly a couple of times over the past few years when he was living at the Jesuit retirement home in Los Gatos, CA. He still had the same good humor, and I was grateful to see him again.
He will really be missed!

Fr. Maloney was such a holy and joyful, gentle priest. He could handle even the most complicated and delicate situations gracefully and intelligently. His "contagious" serenity was that of one truly at peace with God.

I will remember Father Maloney as a very holy and gentle priest. I will also remember him for the way he made me laugh. Whenever I met him on campus and asked him, "Father, how are you?", he would cheerfully respond, "Oh, parts of me are just fine!"
We'll miss you, Father. May you rest in peace.

Many felt a great loss and sadness to hear the news of the passing of Father Maloney. He was a wonderful and shining example in so many varied ways - as a Jesuit priest, teacher, educator and administrator. I'm very grateful to God for the grace of having known him and worked with him for so long at the St. Ignatius Institute office. He was a living example to me all of those years - day in and day out, and under so many varied circumstances!

Father was a man of quiet reserve and inner strength, deep humility, as well as possessing a natural charm and charisma and refinement. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and Irish wit! Father’s office door was always open to anyone who sought his counsel - student, faculty, alumni, staff, fellow Jesuit, etc. No matter how busy he might have been whenever people stopped by to visit, he always made himself fully available to them.

Father Maloney will always hold a very special part of my memories at USF! I send my condolences to all of his relatives and to the Jesuit Community.

Father Bob, I was just one of the many Maloney children in your life, but you always had a kind gentle word for me. We will all pray for you, just like we prayed with you. We'll miss you.
