TO THE SCHULER/HOGAN FAMILY:

Even though Msgr. Richard J. Schuler is now a member of the "Church Victorious," he surely must revel in Heaven in the wonderful news of Pope Benedict XVI's motu proprio on the Latin Mass in the worldwide Roman Catholic Church.

What a testimony to Monsignor's farsightedness--he anticipated this far ahead of its time! We lifted several "Ave's" for his soul yesterday on 7-7-07--and expressed our thanks to God for his Priesthood and his intervention in facilitating this "motu proprio" that will assure the Catholic faithful attached to the Trdientine Latin Mass that it will be available in the mainstream Roman Catholic Church for years to come!

Gaudeamus, Monsignor Schuler, and Pope Benedict XVI. AD MULTOS ANNOS, Monsignor, in the "Church Victorious"--and may you continue to help those striving to preserve the authentic Catholic liturgical tradition of the Latin Mass from your vantage point at the "Altar of the Most High."

Sincerely,
Max Kaiser, Jr.

Monsignor Schuler was one of the greatest priests I ever had the pleasure to know. I first met him in Rome in 1985 at CIMS. I spent some wonderful time with him and had the pleasure of going out to dinner with him in Rome during a blackout! My friend Phil, Msgr. and I were the only ones in the restaraunt and had the greatest meal of our life by candlelight. A few years later my family and I drove to St. Paul, MN for a family reunion and met up with Monsignor at St. Agnes. The kindness he showed to my family and I (taking us on a personal driving tour through the city, having breakfast in the rectory) was unbelievable. I saw Monsignor several times over the years after that. I will miss this man very much.
Know that we have a NEW ADVOCATE in heaven for our cause of Sacred Music. We can now pray to him for his intercessions on our behalf. That will be his greatest gift of all!

TO THE SCHULER FAMILY:

We at the "FRIENDS of PRIESTS" Society based in St. Louis, MO, and now serving nationwide, mourn the passing of MSGR. RICHARD J. SCHULER. He truly knew the value of "Priestly Fraternity" in the way he faithfully affirmed his brother priests who were in good graces--and others who struggled!

Msgr. Schuler's dynamic yet traditional spirituality had a catalytic effect on clergy and faithful everywhere--and FRIENDS of PRIESTS will mourn the passing of this gifted man who truly served "in persona Christi" to his fellow clergy and faithful alike.
Rest In Peace, Msgr. Schuler!

TO THE HOGAN FAMILY and
THE CHURCH of SAINT AGNES:

MSGR. RICHARD J. SCHULER will truly be remembered as a traditional yet innovative churchman who did his very best to retain (and maintain!) the dynamic liturgical, artistic and musical traditions of the Roman Catholic Church at St. Agnes Church and nationwide! His intellectual acumen, spirituality, diplomacy and cleverness are not likely to be equaled again--but those who repect his multi-faceted talents and spiritual traditions will appreciate all that he did to affirm the dynamic, organic tradition of the Church--as well as affirm and encourage men to enter the Catholic priesthood!
What a privilege to be at St. Agnes during his pastorate!

REQUIESCAT in PACE, Msgr. Schuler--and many of us who you zealously served will lift an "Ave" for you and all that you gave the Church during your lengthy priesthood!

Sincerely,
MAX KAISER, JR.

Monsignor Schuler, you always said you were a "garden variety Monsignor", but anyone that knew you realized that wasn't true. You were a gift to us. You were such a humble man, in spite of all your amazing accomplishments. You will be missed by your Chorale members, past and current, and everyone whose life you have ever touched.

I've known Father Schuler all of my life. When I was a young girl he gave me the nickname "Schnickelfritz". The name stuck and I stll hear it on occasion to this day.

Growing up, my Sundays were spent in the St. Agnes choir loft. This meant I was exposed early on to a wide variety of very powerful pieces of music. Chosen and enthusiastically conducted by Father Schuler himself. This early exposure had a profound effect on my sense of aesthetics concerning music, and in a most positive way. For this I will always be grateful.

Thank you Father Schuler. May you rest in peace. Namaste.

Monsignor
Schuler was the first of some treasured mentors who helped me in days
of real persecution when I attempted to adhere to traditional sacred
music. It was he who suggested the CMAA colloquium, which proved to be
a real turning point in my life, both personally and musically. While I
know we must pray for the repose of his soul, I can't help but
envision him with that incredible heavenly orchestra and choir of
angels. Thank you, Monsignor. May you rest in peace.

I was privileged to meet Msgr Schuler on a couple of occasions. May he pray in heaven for that ongoing work on earth.

When visiting family in Hudson, WI we would always make a bee-line to St. Agnes. I would run up to the choir loft and sing with the schola, and my convert-wife would pray at the glorious Catholic Liturgy as it was meant to be, and see everyday Catholic parish life as it should be. Thank you Monsignor Schuler. Our Schola in Grand Rapids, MI exists in no small part thanks to your work. Pastor bonus. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine. . .

Deo gratias for Monsignor Schuler! He was a great man, a great priest, and a great musician. In addition, Monsignor was a marvelous host. I was the blessed recipient of his hospitality in August of 1996, when he invited Calvert Shenk, Kurt Poterack, and me to Saint Agnes, so that we could have a "brainstorming" session before beginning work on The Adoremus Hymnal. His dining table was filled with guests at every meal and he presided as the gracious host. While we were there, Monsignor made hospital visits, talked with seminarians, and, of course, celebrated Holy Mass. I will forever be grateful to Monsignor Schuler for his kindly instruction and dedication to the truth in sacred music.

I've never been to St. Agnes and I never met Msgr. Schuler, but his example was legendary and his writing very powerful. In this way, he served as an inspiration to me, and I'm so full of gratitude that he had to courage to do what he did rather than give into the prevailing winds. With the burgeoning movement in sacred music today, it seems increasingly clear that Msgr. Schuler was far ahead of his time. May eternal light shine up on him.

Requiscat in Pacem!
I shall be eternally grateful to Monsignor Schuler and his great work at making St. Agnes parish in St Paul an oasis of Catholic truth and sanity in the turbulent times since 1970. I was born in 1966 and it was not until I was out of high school and moved to the Twin Cities did I feel I "came home" to my Catholic liturgical heritage & spirituality. It was there that I saw the beauty of the Holy Mass for the first time. In the words of our Holy Father Monsigneur Schuler was faithful to the "hermeneutic of continuity" when the majority of parishes were not. He shall be missed.

I was blessed to attend the 1997 National Convention of the Latin Liturgy Association, hosted by Msgr. Schuler at St. Agnes. I shall always be fortified by my remembrances of the Masses and the Corpus Christi Procession of that weekend. Msgr. Schuler was also known to me through his affiliation with the Church Music Association of America. His influence upon and importance to sacred music in America is undeniable and memorable. May God grant him eternal rest. May perpetual light shine upon him.

My Wife Laura and I have been deeply blessed to have been married by Father Schuler 26 years ago, and having two of our three children baptized by him. His support of Catholic traditions were said by some to be out of touch, but father Schuler would smile and say that far from being old-fashioned, the Church would come around to his ideas and to a large extent that has happened. He passed the St. Agnes Parish into good hands who to this day keep the liturgy traditional and beautifully inspiring.

Whenever he answered the phone it was a simple, "This is Father Schuler."

Monsignor Shuler was a great Churchman. As I reflect on the life of Monsignor, I will always think of a great man who never thought of himself as anyone older than me. He had a spring to his step and he always had time for me and anyone who came to his door.

Now that he has passed, whenever I ask for his intercession, I will always hear, "This is Father Schuler."

Thanks for letting me be a continual part of your life. You will be missed and you are loved.

Monsigneur Schuler was a great man who not only took my own family under his wing but he also took and mentored many many others. There are many people who can say that their lives have been touched by this great man. He will be loved and missed by many. My deepest sympathies go out to the members of his own family during this difficult time. I will pray for the repose of his soul and for all that have been touched by Monsigneur. To the Hogans,
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I will never forget Monsignor Schuler. He was a very kind man and faithful servant of our Lord and His Church.

Few have helped me in my life as he did. He was a great man. I am so sorry I am unable to attend the funeral services. So, I wish him farwell from this separated world from Texas. He fought many a good fight in defense of the Faith and he deserves now to rest in peace with the eternal light of the Triune God upon him.

Good bless you Monsignor.

Monsignor Schuler was one of the founding members of the Latin Liturgy Association in 1975 and headed its Minnesota chapter for many years. He was perhaps the leading light in this country, in terms of promoting the reverent and musically sound celebrations of the Mass of Paul VI in Latin, with chant and polyphony. He hosted LLA national conventions at St. Agnes Church in 1989 and 1997.

Dearest Family, brothers and sisters in Christ,
With sadness, true, we reflect on the passing of our dear brother, cousin, uncle, friend, spiritual Father, and tutor. So many memories flood the heart! But upon reflecting on him as a man, I see how Richard Schuler was no extraordinary man: I think instead I am only less a man and saint than I ought be. Msgr Schuler, as best I can remember evoked greatness out of those around him--let us continue to carry on this legacy of diligence, holiness, and joy in the world in which we are merely passing through: loving the sinner, banishing the sin, but over all, striving to SEEK CHRIST, KNOW CHRIST, LOVE CHRIST as our departed brother has given us such noble and charitable witness! Consolation to you each, fellow family members. Encouragement to all: let us pass on his zeal for souls! Let us not forget soon the love he bore "out to all nations"! Let us ignite the world with the blaze of love Christ so passionately desires. Pray for the soul of our dear beloved Msgr. Richard Schuler--in this final stage of his journey, Lord: eternal rest grant unto him, and let perpetual light shine upon him! May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace, in your awesome Presence!

I was fortunate to have met and corresponded with Mgr. Schuler on many occasions.

He was a man of God, and a man of principle; he was extremely knowledgeable but not puffed-up because of his knowledge. He was gentle, and kind.

Most of all, he was courageous, doing what he knew was right and being an example for other, beleaguered church musicians.

He wrote clearly and directly, always providing documentation for his points--he was an educator.

May he rest in peace.

Monsignor Richard, I shall miss you!

Richard has always played an important role in my life as he married my parents, we have a Richard named for him, and he also married my daughter and son-in-law. He was always so cordial and friendly and always took or made the time to acknowledge me, and he made me feel welcome and important.

I used to take groups from our church to attend the Latin Mass and to hear the spectacular choir. Fr. Schuler would welcome the children and give us a special tour of the St. Agnes facility and make a special point of greeting each and every child as if he knew them personally.

Every where I went in my life, from Minneapolis to Alberquerque, Boston to Denver, someone knew Fr. Schuler and to this day I still meet people who were in some positive way affected by his music, guidance and spirituality.

It is never easy saying goodbye to a great friend and ever so much more difficult when this friend is also family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Jean and family. May God Bless you all!

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH, ALONG WITH MY PARENTS, TO HAVE DINNER WITH MONSIGNOR A FEW YEARS AGO. I NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH OF A SENSE OF HUMOR HE HAD! I HAD SO MUCH FUN AND GOT TO KNOW HIM ON A MORE PERSONAL LEVEL AND IT WAS A NIGHT I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE! HE WAS A PHENOMENAL MAN AND A TRIBUTE TO ST. AGNES, IF EVER THERE WAS ONE. WE WERE LUCKY TO HAVE HIM AND ST.AGNES CHURCH WAS BLESSED AT HAVING HIM AS PART OF THEIR LEGACY. When my Uncle Mathias Ethen came to visit us from Portland, Oregon, I would drive him to St. Agnes 10:30 Sunday Mass and we would be in heaven for 1 1/2 hours, then we would meet up with Monsignor Schuler and my Uncle and the Monsignor would have the best visit; they were good frients and both were talented musicians. Thank God for the vision that Monsignor Schuler had for St. Agnes with its beautiful, world-class music. He certainly will have special blessings in heaven!

Geraldine Ethen

April 22, 2007

Monsignor Schuler was considered one of the greats in the Catholic Church in my family here in Portland, Oregon. My father, Mathias Ethen, was from St. Cloud and was a church musician all his life. He worked hard here in Portland to preserve the wonderful musical traditions of our Catholic Church and suffered much with the loss of chant and parish choirs following Vatican II. However he continued to play the organ in our parish until his 90s when he couldn't walk up the steps to the balcony any more. My father would visit Monsignor Schuler and St. Agatha's every time he visited his family, and I had the pleasure of meeting Monsignor several times, including once when he came to Portland during a trip to western Oregon. I also visited St. Agatha's and heard such beautifully sung Masses that they stay in my memory to this day. I am a church organist myself and I hope that I can continue to support Monsignor Schuler's musical standards to the extent I can here in Oregon. Any time a priest dies who has brought classical church music to his people, there is a great hole left in our being.
Please know that Monsignor Schuler was loved and appreciated here for his contributions to the music that brings such glory to God. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the celestial music he so deserves.

Msgr. Schuler,
What a privilege it's been the past 27 years to share with you and the rest of the Chorale the joy of making music that is meant to be preserved and cherished, and brought to life for the glory of God. I am forever grateful to you for your vision and commitment. We will always remember your musical insight, your humor and your wonderful stories. You would have been proud of how well we sung the fugue in the Gloria of the Schubert A flat today! I think we all felt like you guided us through it...We will miss you so much...May you rest in peace!

After
I left the priesthood, I stayed in contact with Msgr. Schuler. Not only
was I an "ex-priest" but I was also called "a liberal." Never mind.
Msgr. Schuler was kind to me as he always was. He had the same sense of
humor, intelligence and sensitivity that I remember from when he had
been my teacher at Nazareth Hall. There goes a kindly man and a
wonderful priest. The pastor at St. Joan of Arc eulogized him in his
homily today. He asked "What was the difference between Msgr. Schuler
and Father Egan? Answer: "You could negotiate with Msgr. Schuler." May
he rest in peace. We all of us, liberals or conservatives, know we lost
a good priest.
