Grant Butenhoff Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Feb. 3, 2004.
Butenhoff Grant Eric Butenhoff, age 37, passed away on February 2nd after a valiant battle with Burkitt's lymphoma. Grant graduated from high school in Crookston, Minnesota in 1985, then served in the US Marine Corps for six years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and a member of the MN Army National Guard. He earned his Bachelors degree at the University of MN and his MBA at the University of St. Thomas. Throughout his illness he was employed by BenNevis, Inc. of Wayzata as a Project Manager. He expressed to his family and friends how fulfilled he was working with such outstanding colleagues. Grant resided in Minneapolis with his loving wife, Lynn, and their two Airedales, Romulus and Kardassia. Grant was a man of many interests. He, Lynn and a group of special friends, participated every year at the Renaissance Festival. He loved reading, computer gaming, politics, and was a successful deer hunter. Growing up, he caught his fair share of walleyes with his fisherman Grandfather, Roger Briden, who preceded him in death two years ago. Grant was also preceded in death by his Grandmother, Faith Briden, on December 25, 2003 and his Grandfather, Albert Butenhoff in January 1988. Grant leaves behind an adoring family and many friends who will treasure their memories of his caring and loving ways; his devoted wife, Lynn; his father, Gary Butenhoff, and his wife, Melody Lafriniere of Corrales, NM; his mother, Judee Butenhoff of Crookston, MN; his sister, Jennie Fay Tafoya, and her daughter, Faith Anna of Albuquerque, NM; his grandmother, Edna Ehnes of Crookston, MN; his stepmother, Gail Sather of Washington, DC; his stepsister, Melanie Ueland and her husband, Ali Shirvani-Mahdavi, and their children, Beck and Eden; his stepbrother, Chris Ueland and his wife, Terri and their children, Hailee, Carter and Emily; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. Grant's never-ending capacity to demonstrate good cheer, love and kindness to all around him will remain in our hearts forever. The family extends its sincere thanks to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and especially to the Station 30 nursing staff, for its compassionate care. Services to be held Thursday at 12:00 Noon at the Cremation Society of MN, 4343 Nicollet Ave. S., Mpls. 612-825-2435, with 2 PM interment at Fort Snelling. Memorials preferred to the family.

Grant was my step-son; always a tough and principled person with the very sweet smile and pleasant personality....driven to excel in whatever he did. Grant was always kind and gentle and agreeable to a fault. He and Jennie joined my two children in my heart and that love will always be there. Praise God that he has promised that we will meet again and there will be joy in that reunion...till then Grant, we will miss you.

Grant was a Brother and a friend.
He has left us to early, and we greatly miss his presence in our lives. I am thankful for all the times we shared from our first meeting, sitting in a boat in the garage at our home in EGF, to the service times we experienced together in the Guard. I know that we will be together again some day and I look forward to that reunion.

Sorrow delayed is not sorrow denied. I am agrieved to hear of Grant's passing. Like many, I knew him through his online personna, Granarc. Even through the lens of an internet game, it was clear that Grant was a leader among men; a noble soul who's passing does not in one whit diminish his nobility. He will forever live in our hearts and minds as friend, compatriot, and leader par excellance. My prayers for his repose go up to heaven, and extend to those family, friends and loved ones who most assuredly miss his presence.

God bless you, Grant.

Like many others here, I knew Granarc on Dark Age of Camelot. I was priviledged to have served under him on many raids he led in the early years. The connection you can have to someone in the virtual community is very odd -- in a way you don't know them at all, and in other way you see ONLY what a person is truly like, without any distortion from their appearance, their age, clothing, or accent. In that respect Granarc always came across as a tremendously inspiring person; honest, direct, strong, and noble.

I'm very sorry this note is so delayed; I only heard about his passing yesterday from a mutual online friend, and was terribly saddened to hear about it. Granarc will always be remembered by those who knew him. I will see him forever bright, forever shining, and forever leading us all to victory.

I was shocked and very saddened to hear about Grant. I found out just yesterday from past co-workers at American Express. I want to thank all of my family, friends, and "new friends" for their support at Grant's bedside the last days of his life. It was the most difficult thing I have ever experienced in my life to watch my big brother slip away with so much life left to live. Your support made those days much more comforting.

To all of "Granarcs" comrads, he was a mighty warrior to his last breath. As his lil' sister it amazes me and gives me great joy to know he touched so many lives. The hole in my heart will be filled with the honorable words of inspiration towards the celebration of my brother's life, to me, known as "Grant the Great". He too was my guide and leader. He had big dreams and plans for his three year old neice, who I will show your words of friendship to. She will know how truly wonderful her Uncle Granty was.

The day of his death was, " The Return of King".

I love you Lyn

I never had the honor to meet Grant in real life but I am happy that I did get to spend over 2 years gaming along side him in DAoC. I knew Grant through Dark Age of Camelot as well. As I sit here and ponder what to say, fond memories of him pass through my mind. From the days he took charge and lead a Galladoria raid to going for the relics, he always proved himself time after time as being a great leader. He would always go out of his way to help you out if he could. I am truely saddened to hear that he will no longer be around. To his family : I wish you all the best. He was such a great and caring man. No one could ever ask for anything better.

I only knew Grant from DAOC--for what its worth, he was the best leader on Guinevere and likely any server and had the respect of *thousands* of people who while did not know him in real life, knew what he represented and had endless respect for him. I was but a number among those who had the pleasure of being in his guild and a lead closely with him in many events.

My condolences to his family and the thousands of people around the country he has left an unforgettable impression on. Grant was a great man.

Rest in Peace, Granarc.

For two years I fought beside you in glorious battles, realmmate. And tho it has been a few months since we spoke, I am truely saddened at your suffering, and am only comforted by the legacy you have left behind. For you have taught so many what loyalty means, as you led hundreds of us in epic battles against enemies and the dragon. I was honored to have been given the privlege to be your healer those times I was. I am sorry we Druids could not heal you of this affliction. Go now in peace, God-King of Hibernia (smile), the war for you is over.

To his family: we loved Grant as Granarc, and respected him, he was our Leader, in the truest sense of the word.

It is amazing the people you can meet through a game, and in a competitive sense, have honor and respect for the person behind the character. A little over a year ago, Grant was a familiar foe in DAoC and I remember having brief conversations with him concerning strategies within the game. It's weird how you can have such respect and honor for someone for their tactical planning in game - which is just a mere pixel of their brilliance in real life. Many lives were touched by Grant, maybe not so much mine directly, but indirectly he was one to always admire. To his family, my prayers and sympathies are with you.

What else is there left to say?

Grant was always a special person from the time when I first met him in junior high school till the very end of his life. He was always one of the friendliest and most outgoing people you could ever meet. In his life, Grant always seemed to travel in many different circles and he always seemed to make friends no matter where he ventured. It is fitting that such a dynamic person should have such a wide collection of people who were willing to be with him at the end... which came too quickly.

For those of you who only knew him through his online conquests, your greatest loss will be that you never got to meet him in person and experience his clever wit and wonderful laugh. He will be truly missed in many different places around the globe.

I would personally like to thank his Minneapolis friends for their beautiful music and their touching words at his service. Although it was a very sad moment for all, it was a wonderful way to say goodbye to a good friend.

Lynn, we'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

I too met Grant on DaoC many years ago now. I am thankful to have known such a wonderful man. The Realm held a tribute to him lastnight, we gathered by a lake, we gathered the Midgards and the Albions and well most of Hibernia. Granny would have been so proud as i was of the out pouring of love and respect.

Be very proud, he was a gentleman who earned the respect and loyalty of many.

I met Grant as well on Dark Ages of Camelot. Just in the short time that we played together he taught me so much. More than anything about honor and respect, and I'm a better person because of him. He is a true friend that I looked up to, and respected dearly. His death is a tragic loss not only to the game he loved, but to the world in general. He is in a better place now, and will never feel pain again, and I hope that helps with his passing.

My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and to all who knew him.
