Karen was the first student who befriended me when I switched elementary schools, from Beverly Vista to Horace Mann. I remember, quite well, sitting alone on some stairs outside the art classroom, when a willowy blond girl sat down beside me and smiled. She said her name, asked me how I was and started a comfortable, friendly conversation. I´d started drawing on a piece of paper and she leaned closer to get a better look . "Oh, you´re an artist," she said, smiling. Everything about her was gentle, patient and kind. That was the beginning of a friendship in the third grade. We stayed friends. When I was married, Karen was in my small wedding party. Then, I moved to Georgia, when my husband joined the Institute of Ecology and I became an artist for P.B.S. Time flowed by. Once in a while I remembered various moments we´d had, especially when Karen´s mother died at Christmas. She was stalwart but we were both crying. She was a loving, bright person. I miss her and I hope her family is well and in possession of the brightness she shared with many people. Sending you much love, dear Karen, Deborah.

My thoughts are prayers are with Karen's family. Her legacy is her wonderful family and her long, faithful and courageous battle against cancer.

Forty years of friendship is hard to put into a few words, so I won't try. My heart aches at the loss of you.
