Elizabeth Johnson Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 27, 2009.
JOHNSON, Elizabeth Savage, died at her Richmond home, "Laurel Meadows", on February 22, 2009. Elizabeth grew up in Eustis, Florida, with her parents, Nellie and Edward Morris Savage; and brothers, Francis and Merle. She studied journalism at FSU, and earned a nursing degree from Johns Hopkins, and a B.A. degree in English from VCU. In 1942, Elizabeth married William Richard Johnson, with whom she lovingly raised three children. Mrs. Johnson's 40-year career as an RN included public health, private duty, burn care at MCV and spinal cord care at Richmond's V.A. hospital. Her skill and compassion were appreciated by her patients, to whom she was devoted. Involved in historical research and preservation, she was a member of the Chesterfield Historical Society and its cemetery committee. Mrs. Johnson was also a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Church and previously the Church of the Good Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her children, Caroline, Douglas, and Stephen (Carol), five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was a writer and pianist, as well as a nurse, and she inspired love in those whose lives she touched, who also appreciated her delightful humor. With deep gratitude, the family thanks her caregivers, Tracey, Chiny and many others, who helped her complete her life's journey. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 28, in Hollywood Cemetery.

Dear Doug,
Your mother will be greatly missed by all the people that she touched in her lifetime. She will live on as you carry her heart and soul in you. You were able to keep her in the home she and your father so loved and raised their family. She always had a smile on her face for everyone that came to see her. She is now able to play with Happy and do the things that she was unable to do for so long. We are all better just for having the pleasure of knowing her. You have been a wonderful son to her and great friend to us. If we can help you in any way, you know we are here for you.

Your mom was a lot like mine, she had a lot of class and always a great smile for me when ever I saw her. She is now in a peaceful place with your dad.

Dearest Caroline,

Just saw your Mother's obituary online...and am so sorry. It was so good to be with the two of you in August. She was a lovely lady. It gave me the warm fuzzies to think of your relationship with her...and especially to know that you read to her every evening over the telephone. You have been a good and faithful daughter and I know she was so proud of you. The notice in the paper is beautiful.
Lovingly,
