Richard Meadows Obituary

Published by Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service on Aug. 30, 2009.
MEADOWS, Richard L. Sr., 66, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2009. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Meadows Jr., of Crewe and Shenandoah; and stepfather, Jack K. Templeton, of Newport News. Dick is survived by his loving devoted wife, Sarah "Bunny" Meadows; mother, Phyllis M. Templeton; son, Richard L. Meadows Jr.; brothers, Joe Meadows and his wife, Donna, Doug Meadows and his wife, Pat; stepsons, Eugene and Edward Stanley; granddaughter, Margo; step granddaughters, Lacey, Stephanie, Samantha, Helen and Sallie Stanley. Dick was a graduate of Virginia Tech. Foremost among his many accomplishments as a member of the Corp of Cadets, a member of the Gregory Guard, commander in the Arnold Air Society, major on the Regimental Staff, and cherished fellowship with the Golden A's. He went on to pilot the C-130 aircraft as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed in the Philippines, his missions took him to and from Vietnam during the height of the war. He continued flying after his duty with the Air Force Reserve. He later worked for Travelers Insurance Company and Rhyne Contractors. Dick's avid love of fishing and hunting was shared with his brothers throughout his life and will surely be missed by those big bass and deer. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). A celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Crewe Cemetery, Crewe, Va. at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Hospice of Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va., 23226.

Bunny and family, I was so shocked and saddened to read of Dickie's death in the Virginia Tech magazine today. I served four terrific years with him including our serving together on the Regimental Staff at Tech in '66. He was indeed the class clown but also a great friend and gallant warrior in Vietnam. I hope someday you will allow me share some of my favorite stories. Godspeed dear friend. Bill Ohl '66, Tucson, Arizona.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Dickie was a good friend of mine during our high school days, and I always looked forward to seeing him at class reunions and at Crewe Homecoming events, along with his brothers. I'll miss him and will always remember him.

My thoughts are with all of your family at this challenging time. "Dickie" was a dear friend of mine through elementary and high school. Once in college, our lives took different paths, but we certainly enjoyed seeing each other in Crewe, at other colleges and as time passed...reunions. He was so full of himself with his dry sense of humor and touching smile. May all of you have wonderful memories to fill your hearts and give you strength.
