CHILDREY, Stephen, M.D., of Chase City, Va., died Friday, September 18, 2009. He was born in Richmond, Va. on November 21, 1914, the son of the late Edgar and Eva Lowry Childrey. Dr. Childrey is survived by his two daughters, Cecilia Sakakini DuSang and husband, George, of Lakewood, Wash. and Sara Watts and husband, Robert, of Richmond, Va., and one son, Roy Childrey IV and wife, Joyce Duffer Childrey of Williamsburg, Va. Also surviving are his former wife, Mrs. Frankie Ottley of Richmond, Va.; a stepdaughter, Pam Bergey of Harrisonburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Childrey was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Nicholson Childrey; three brothers, Howard, Edgar, and Roy; five sisters, Evelyn, Alice, Grace, Helen, and Elizabeth; and a son-in-law, Joseph Sakakini Jr. Dr. Childrey began his work experience in the Civilian Conservation Corps, followed by several years as a railway postal clerk. He attended Randolph-Macon College, and was a 1947 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. In 1949, he began his medical practice in South Boston, Va. Shortly thereafter, he and his family relocated to Chase City, Va., and he was in private practice there from 1950 to 1977. From 1977 until his retirement in 1997, he was the director of the Southside Virginia Health District. For a short time prior to his death, Dr. Childrey resided at Somerset Assisted Living in South Boston, Va. His passions, in addition to his family, were playing golf, tending his farm, raising cattle, and reading. He was a longstanding member of Mecklenburg Country Club, and played golf and gin rummy with his friends all his life. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Chase City, Va., 4 p.m. Monday, September 21, with the Rev. Paul Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends at the Mecklenburg Country Club in Chase City from 5 to 8 p.m. following the memorial service. Interment will be at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 1214 Wilmer Ave., Richmond, Va., on Tuesday, September 22 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in his name to one of his favorite places, the Butler Memorial Library in Chase City, Va. 23924.
