I was honored to sit next to Sam on the plane out of Columbus to Minneapolis where he was going for pre-deployment training. We talked the entire flight, and he helped me make the decision to take the job transfer and move to Columbus. Hearing about this death on the news hit me hard. Every year since, I remember Sam on Memorial Day. As long as I am alive you will never be forgotten - even if we only met once for a short time.

As Memorial Day approaches this community still raises our heads high for the sacrifice that you made. Everybody knows your name and the people that knew you closely knows you wouldn't care! I told someone the story of Sam Pearson today! Not just about sacrifice, but about honesty, generosity, integrity, ect...Stories live on forever! It has been 7 years since I posted on this platform. To be honest I did not know it was still active, but I was sharing your story and came across it again. When I run on the bike path I frequently run to your memorial. I always feel at ease sitting on your bench while putting my life into perspective and putting my little troubles behind me. Now that's leaving a legacy! Miss you Sammy!

Dear Pearson family,

I am not really sure where to begin. My name is SGT McLucas, Lillian. I was the medic that 1st helped with the treatment of your son.

I can assure you that he was not in any pain and was not alone when he passed.

I am still caring this with me today trust me in 15 months i saw my fair share of wounded soldiers. But for what ever reason the death of your son hit me hard and has been very hard for me to accept that we did everything we could.

as the 5 year date approaches for this i have written a number of letters to ya'll but could never mail them . I just was not sure what to say.

.On Oct, 10th, 2007 .One of my best friends was lost his life in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His name was Samuel F. Pearson. Sam and another person were killed that day the other person was Staff Sgt. Lillian Clamens, 35, Lawton, Okla.
What I know about SSG. Clamens who served in the Army Reserve for 17 years, was a full-time postal worker, and served as an administrative clerk for the unit. She was married with three children. SSG. Clamens was to go home two days later. I never had the honor to meet her but from what I have read about her.
She was scheduled to be coming home for good on Oct, 12, 2007
“She was the type of person that was honest,” her niece Sierra Cobbin, of Omaha, “She never had a bad bone in her body. She did everything for her family. She was confident, strong and just a very down-to-earth person.” I think Sam and Lillian would have been very good friends if there would have had the chance to sit and talk...
Sam touched so many lives in a good way. I can say he never said a bad thing about anyone. He gives you anything you ever asked of him.
The thing about Sam that I will never forget is, when I had my first knee replacement done. Sam would come over and walk our dog for us, Debbie and I never even asked him to do this for us. He just did it on his own. To this day I have to say I never met a person that was so kind hearted as Sam was.
I have met and got to know Sam’s family there. I see were Sam got his good heart from. His mom and his dad are both very up standing and very loving and kind and Sam’s brothers and sister. Are just like Sam. I know there will be nothing that could replace the lost of a son, a brother or even a great friend. But now Sam has a few little nephews and nieces. That I know will be told about their Uncle Sam. And how good of a person he was
Sam I miss you and I will never forget you
Knowing Sam you and Lillian Clamens are watch down on all of us that known and loved you two.

I had written SPC Samuel Pearson's name in my notebook along with many other names of wounded personnel on that night as I tried to take account of all who went down from the attack. I know that no words of regret and sorrow can ease your family's grief for the loss of a great and young patriot. But I can tell you on that night, Sam was cared for by many of his fellow soldiers. I saw at least 15 people around him, tending to his wounds, encouraging him, accompanying him on the ambulance- officers, enlisted, it didn't matter; he was a soldier that needed help and love that soldiers understand. No words of mine will ease what you have experienced, but I hope you know that Samuel was surrounded by caring, hope, and love that night a year ago. My utmost condolences and respect go to you and your family.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Sam, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I am sorry for your loss and wish to offer my condolences to your family.

I am stationed in Balad, Iraq with the U.S. Army. My unit, the 336th Finance Management Center, deployed with the 376th Finance about the same time (late May through late August, 2007). I did not know SPC Pearson personally but was scheduled to visit the office where he worked at Camp Victory.

The community of finance soldiers is small, and I knew I must have met him in a hallway at our training building. We met at Fort McCoy at the field training site or at the dining facility.

I was stunned to learn of his death. A couple of days after his death, at 4:00 A.M., I had a vivid memory of him at Fort McCoy. He had appeared to me in a dream.

Samuel is not forgotten by his fellow soldiers.

To the family of Samuel Pearson: Please accept my sympathy and prayers. I am the mother-in-law of Lillian Clamens who died along with your son on that fateful day. My 7yr old grandaughter asked the priest "Why don't we get two chances to live?" and he answered "We do", because Sam and Lillian are both living in heaven (their second chance). I hope this brings some solace to your family. Your son is truly a hero and an example to all. God Bless you all.

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
