Mr. Evelyn (even at age 49, he will always be known to me as Mr. Evelyn) was my art teacher at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. I have fond memories of those classes and remember thinking at the time what a kind man he was and how comfortable he was with who he was. I am sad to hear of his passing but grateful to learn of his rich life.

I am in FL for the winter, and just heard today about David's death. Ron Kolonowski saw that I was not at the funeral, and knew that I hadn't heard. I have been in tears all day. David and I were in the same St. Mark's confirmation class over 25 years ago, and have been dear friends ever since. So many memories of my lovely friend--his 50th birthday party, visiting him in Maine during Barbie's kidnapping, introducing him to the deep South in my north Florida hometown for the annual Catfish Festival, our time at my weekend house on the Chesapeake Bay. While wading barefoot in the Great Wicomico River, he felt natural clay under his toes, put a clod in the plastic bag he always carried to hold his precious found objects, and soon he brought me a wonderful whistle in the shape of a bird that he'd fashioned and fired from the clay. Our last day together was in Adams Morgan, visiting galleries, having lunch and just handing out. I always saw art through different eyes when David was there to teach me.There is a hole in my heart.

I am so sad to have heard of the passing of the talented, warm, fun loving gentleman we knew as Dave. Having gone to the same church in Pleasantville, same class in high school, and then to end up at the same great university, Bucknell, I felt very lucky. It was wonderful to get to chat with Dave at our high school reunion last year to add to my memories. Condolences to Dave's family and friends. He was a truly unique human being.

I had a chance to introduce my wife Mary to him at our 50th reunion. Two days later on our flight home she turned to me and said, "That guy Dave acted as if he had known me all his life." A truly kind person.

Dave was my locker neighbor all through high school - a wonderful, silly, tender friend. At our 40th high school reunion we reconnected and spent a wonderful couple of days the following summer on the island off the coast of Maine where I live. We were both without partners at the time, and one bright spot in the terrible sadness of Dave's death for me is knowing that he found a life partner in Robert. I will always cherish the small painting he gave me of a tiny Maine island. My heart is with everyone for whom this loss is so immediate and enduring. All blessings,

On the Millenium, David brought all the materials to make snow globes to a dinner party. I still have mine with Daisey Duck and a stripped lizard. When I moved to my new house in Va. he gave me one of his paintings. He included his art in
all of his life. He also introduced me to the Isleboro dog show and other special island events. A dear, generous,
friend, like no other. A sad empty space.

David was a friend since elementary school in Thornwood. In high school we took art classes together, worked on the same organizations and were in a talent show comedy act together. At our first class reunion we were surprised to find out we had both become art teachers, were active in our churches and took on leadership roles. What a great dancer he was. Even though he was cautious, we danced a slow lindy together at our 50th. David touched many people's lives in such good ways. I will not forget him and am saddened that his creativity has been silenced.

I also had really nice conversations with Dave at our last high school reunions. Would like to echo what everyone is saying about his infectious lightness of spirit and humanity. Condolences and love to all his family and friends. What a warm, appreciative, and loving spirit he had. -Judy Johnson Thoms

I am so glad to have seen Dave at our PHS 50th reunion in 2011. Always loved being around him..he always had a smile, was engaged with you 100%.....I used to have a piece of his artwork from years ago and unfortunately it has disappeared somewhere along the way, two adirondack chairs, enpty, looking out over water. Peaceful... Rest in Peace Dave, you will truly be missed.

David was loved by everyone I know in our community at St. Mark's on Capitol Hill. He was always on -- one of the most artistic loving individuals I have ever known. What a tremendous loss but what a wonderful life he lived, giving so much to so many. May you rest in peace David knowing how much you are loved and missed.

David and I were fraternity brothers at Bucknell and roommates senior year. We stayed in touch for all the years following graduation. My fondest memories are of visiting museums with David and having him help me interpret art. I will truly miss him. Tom Leonhardt Portland Maine

Not sure if what I wrote earlier got through but need to convey that Dave was a wonderful intellectual (if you can be that) at that age) classmate. He was also caring and "simpatico" as he was during the three PHS reunions we had. This includes the recent one when he spoke to me about how enamored he was with his best friend and and the two places he was sending with him. I wonder if he knows if he was ill then.
But, in any case, I was very fond of Dave, really planned to see him again, spend more time with him, and am bereft about his demise.
Hope

David attended our Pleasantville High School Reunion in 2011 and was the same positive, caring and friendly guy I had known in high school 50 years before. Below are some of David's memories of high school as he posted them on our website before the reunion. What a productive life he has lived!
"Ice skating on Opperman's Pond and the reservoir.
long lunch hours to chill, have activities or even walk home for lunch.
Morning 1 mile walks to school picking up classmates along the way, Eileen Walsh, Elaine Valentino, Phil Sandler, Steve Pressfield. Getting lifts on occassion from one of the teacher/staff commuters getting off the Saw Mill Pkwy (Jean Truax, guidance secretary).
Mowing Mr. McCreery lawn.(brownie points!)
dances at school, pizza, going to the movies, record shop,
returning to Pleasantville in the 8th grade after leaving thornwood in the 3d grade moving to PA. reconnection with the Thornwood friends."

I knew David as a fellow resident of Thornwood, NY, where we both grew up. I can't remember ever seeing him without a smile. What a bright light he cast on all of us.

David was my Sunday school teacher when I was a teenager. He made a huge impact on my life when I was going through a tough time figuring out what my place in life was. He was a wonderful man and will be sorely missed!

I am a friend from David's summer island of Islesboro. I was lucky enough to know him for almost 30 years. There will never be another David and I will enjoy the happiness he added to my life forever.

David was extraordinary in so many ways. First as a friend, for I will love him dearly for the rest of my days. But also as a dedicated teacher, an inspiring artist, a tireless volunteer co-worker, and an open, humble, kind, authentic, sparkling spirit. Love love love xxxM
