David Kunze Obituary

KUNZE, David P. Of South Dennis, formerly of Roslindale, died peacefully in his home on May 9, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Judith C. (Orthman) Kunze, to whom he was married for over 48 years. Loving father of Stephen M. Kunze & his wife Carole of Germantown, MD and Joseph M. Kunze & his wife Heidi of Chelmsford. Dear grandfather of Lauren C., Paul J., Nicholas G., Hannah T., Erin J., and Matthew S. Kunze. Dear brother of Maureen Uber of Holbrook and Paula Hannigan of Wareham.Family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate David's life in the F. J. Higgins Funeral Home, 4236 Washington St. (Corner of Cummins Hwy.) ROSLINDALE SQUARE on Sunday, May 15th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale on Monday, May 16th at 10:00 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Boston Prostate Cancer Walk, 69 Farragut Ave., Somerville, MA 02144 or to: Sacred Heart Memorial Fund, Sacred Heart Parish, 169 Cummins Highway, Roslindale, MA 02131. David was a graduate of Boston Technical High School and Boston University, and was an engineering manager for several computer companies, including Computer Control Company, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corporation and Wang Labs. David was active in the Roslindale community for many years. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the United States, he co-founded the Roslindale Historical Society in 1973, and served as its President for many years. As part of Roslindale's local celebration of the Bicentennial, David organized and chaired a Bicentennial Parade Committee to put on Roslindale's first parade. Because of the success of this event, the parade became an annual event, with David as the chair of the committee for over 10 years. This Parade is called the Roslindale Day Parade, and continues to take place in October each year. David became a member of the Sudbury Company of Minute and Militia in 1973 and took place in many historic reenactments over the years. As recently as April, 2010, David took part in the Sudbury Militia's annual March to Concord on April 19, Patriot's Day. David has also been a long-time member of the Friends of Minuteman National Historical Park in Concord. David also spent much time painstakingly restoring his home on Poplar Street, the oldest house in Roslindale, built around 1725. He was determined that the restoration work be as authentic as possible. He obviously reached his goal, since in February, 2001, David was honored for his restoration work by the Boston Preservation Alliance. In 2001, David and Judith retired to South Dennis. Since moving to South Dennis, David was an active member of the Josiah Dennis Manse Committee and a member of the Yarmouth Militia. Not sure what to say?

May 19, 2011

I know my wife, Fran has already entered made an entry in the guest book but after returning home to Connecticut I had the following thoughts regarding, David Paul Kunze. I, like he, are the Grandpas in the Kunze/Ingallinera family. So David and I shared many thoughts over the years on our role as grandfathers. He selected Papa, which I never realized how it was spelled until just recently in reading the flowers at the funeral home. I selected, Grandpa. But no matter what names we selected we both shared a common role of setting an example for the young adults and grandchildren to follow. I'm sure at times Dave's decisions or comments as were mine were not necessarily well received by our grandchildren but nevertheless I never doubted that he always had the strongest concerns about their well being. I feel that role falls to me solely in Connecticut and I already miss the phone calls announcing "Cape Cod" calling. Rest in Peace, Dave.

Judy, Maureen and Paula
I just heard today (16 May) of Davids passing and my deepest sympathy to all of you. Had I known I would have attended the wake.
Its been a long time since that 1938 arrival at 11 Whitford St. in a very old truck from Maine in the arms of his Dad. Our first meeting.
I talked to David less than a month agao while visiting the Cape and he did not feel up to a visit. I'm so sorry.
I'm in Hingham, Ma. Call me anytime. Paul J. Getchell

One other very special remembrance. Dave, 47 years ago today you were the best man at our wedding. We looked at those pictures again, including the one of you pointing at your watch to tell me not to be late. And the picture that wasn't there - your car overheating on Charles Street between the Boston Common and the Public Garden as you were driving us to our honeymoon suite at the Logan Airport hotel. We will miss you.

Dear Kunze Family,

Paul, Anthony, Nathaniel and I are so very sorry to hear about the passing of your father and husband to Judy.

In our brief meetings at parties and PC activities, he truly was a warm, giving and gentle man.

To Steve, carole and the kids.... your activities, accomplishments and family trips provided your dad and grandfather wonderful experiences and fond memories that I am sure brought a smile to his face each and every time that her reminised about these events.

With much love, we share our sympathies. Marcia Proto

Judy
I am so sorry for Dave's passing and that I am unable to come up for the services. Dave, Jim McNamee and I go back 70 years. I see Susan remembered the Christmases at your Roslindale house. She forgot those magnificent electric trains. I'm glad Carole was able to make it to the wake. Our prayers are with you all.
