CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Barry Dominick passed away in the comfort of the home that he loved on April 30, 2012, after a spinal cord injury and an extended complicated illness.
Barry was born December 23, 1939, to Thelma and Snowden Dominick in Rock Hill, S.C. Barry was one of six children who grew up on Chestnut Street. He attended Central Elementary, Rock Hill High School and Clemson University. In school, Barry was known for his oratory and debating skills, winning several awards for speeches.
After a year at Clemson University and five years in the U.S. Army, he started as a DJ for WRHI radio in Rock Hill. He had a passion for radio and a dream to turn the station into a success. He worked as Station Manager from the 1960s until he left in 1977. Barry worked for Ryder Truck Leasing for 25 years. Shortly after his retirement from Ryder, he began working part-time for the Mecklenburg County ABC stores, a job he loved because of the good spirited customers and his fellow co-workers.
Barry loved sports and was an avid USC Gamecock fan, especially in football and baseball. On any given weekend it would not be unusual to find him in front of the TV watching one game, while listening to another on the radio. He loved dogs and they loved him. Barry was a strong, earnest, and caring man who always had an optimistic attitude and made the best of any situation. He had a calm confidence that allowed others to feel comfortable in his presence. He was full of fun and always had a smile and kind word for those he encountered.
Barry is survived by his wife, Melinda, his daughter, Mary Carolyn, and his sisters, Janet Sampson, Gail Dearing and Kerry Dominick. He was preceded in death by his son, Jon Taylor Snowden Dominick; his daughter, Laura Beth Dominick; his parents, Snow and Thelma Dominick; his sister, Lowaine McKenzie and his brother, Virgil Dominick.
Barry’s sound advice, thoughtful actions, and warm love will be missed forever. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Edward Bradford, Barry’s primary healthcare provider for many years, for his kindness and caring, Also thanks to the receptionists at Mecklenburg Medical Group, who were extremely helpful in a pinch. The family is eternally grateful to Susie Johnson, R.N., for it was because of her knowledge, strength, and gentle guidance that the family was better able to support Barry and do the best by him.
Barry had a deep commitment to Hospice because of the special care that Hospice provided to his daughter, Beth. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice Care of Charlotte (Main), at 1420 East Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204. A memorial service in celebration of Barry and his love will be held at 3 p.m. this Sunday, May 27, 2012, in Laurelwood Cemetery, located at 143 Laurel Street, in Rock Hill, S.C.
J. B. Tallent Funeral Service is assisting the family.

I will always remember Barry and how he helped me working at WRHI. I will miss his kindness and sense of humor, and our long friendship after the radio station. The world became a better place when he came into it. I even miss the times he would make me laugh when I was trying to read a commercial!!

This obituary is a beautiful description of Barry. I had the honor of working with him at WRHI while in High School and he was one of the most delightful and caring people I ever met.
