William Evans Obituary

EVANS, WILLIAM William "Willie" "Velv" Evans, 84, of Oronoque Forest, West Haven, devoted husband of more than 61 years to Judy (Ginsberg) Evans, died at his home on March 22, 2011. Born in New Haven, July 12, 1926, he was a son of the late Samuel & Rose (Yasmer) Evans. Beloved father of Peter (Kathleen Orr) Evans of Tucson, AZ & Allan Evans of West Haven. Dear brother of Herbert Evans of West Haven, the late Simon & Leonard Evans. Cherished & loving grandfather of Erin, Matthew, Sean, Sam, Alex, & Ben. Willie joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served 2 years on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Boxer. Upon seeing Willie's artwork, the ship's senior officers made him "ship's artist." From 1949-1971 Willie headed up the advertising for the family businesses. To this day, the ad's he created for the Food Basket and for Alling Sporting Goods are considered classics. His professional career blossomed with 12 years of creativity at Lender's Bagel Bakery. He created a "personality" for the product, the company, and for the family, which is something Madison Avenue agencies strive for but seldom achieve. While bringing, smiles and happiness to so many, Willie always made time for community and friends. The American Heart Assoc., Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven, Yale-New Haven Cardiovascular Research Fund, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, New Haven Jewish Federation & the United Jewish Appeal, Hillhouse High School, the Woodbridge, CT Ambulance fund-raising drive, Clifford Beers Guidance Clinic, Columbus House, along with many others, were the beneficiaries of his eye-catching work. Willie also frequently volunteered at local schools, teaching kids how to sketch and draw. His gifts of personalized art have become legendary: they can be found in homes, hospitals, restaurants, and schools throughout the community. Willie was a master at nurturing friendships through his genuine warmth, kindness, and humor. He touched so many and will be dearly missed. Funeral Services at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven FRIDAY morning at 11:00 o'clock with Interment Services to follow at B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven. Memorial contributions may be sent to Ronald McDonald House, 501 George St., New Haven, CT 06511 or to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405. Dear Judy,
Sorry to hear about Willie. I think of him when I see and wear the Music Box T shirt where he did the art work. His art work was humerous and always told the story.

Willie was simply one of the BEST!

I will always remember him bringing me a piece of candy after lunch. Many times when I was giving my daughter a lesson, on the practice tee, their was Willie and friends on the verandra. He would be rating her with numbers one through ten on her progress. I will miss Willie very much and love him dearly.

Willie was one of the first faces I saw when I started working at Velv. I knew at that point, that Willie would be a long time friend and co-worker. He was always good for a morning joke or a comforting hug. His artwork was second to none, and he could sketch something up at a blink of an eye. Many a time I would drive through town and see that license plate right it front of me (VELV), and say to myself, "hey, there's Willie!" - beep, beep. Thanks for the memories Will! I'll miss you!

Willie made the world a better place. He let himself be wholly known and inspired others to do the same. Warm, funny, unpredictable, a true artist, one-of-a-kind, he was the whole world's uncle...Uncle Willie, forever in our hearts!

I was so saddened to hear about Willie's passing. He did so much for my family with his great artist ability. He would come down to Bridgeport to where I teach and draw with my children. He loved all the kids. What a special person Willie was. My thoughts are with his family on your loss. Love, Erin Amaral

Our family is heartbroken today. Willy was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known. He was a humorous, talented, and well-liked person who has done many favors for many people. As Dad once said, I don't think you'll ever find anyone who has a bad word to say about Willy Evans. For me personally, it is impossible to think of my days growing up without thinking of Willy. My first baseball glove, fishing pole, camping tent... the Yale football games, the NFL picks, Thanksgiving, talking about President Kennedy, my summer job at Velv. All of which I'm sure required a tremendous amount of patience on Willy's part. I have so many fond and enduring memories of Willy I wouldn't even know where to begin. My heart goes out to Judy, Peter, Allan, and the entire Evans family. I will miss him dearly.

Shalom Willy.

Love,
Kyle

Willy Evans was a real MENSCH...and he was the funniest man I have ever known. I spent so much time playing in his office growing up...I'm sure annoying him to no end. I can still hear him paging "Jim QUACKenbush" over the loudspeaker at work. Just to make me laugh. He is a legend in New Haven and his memory will live forever. What a gift it was to have known him....much love to the entire Evan's family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Haris
