John Cifala Obituary

CIFALA Dr. JOHN ANTHONY CIFALA April 21, 1922 - February 23, 2013 Dr. John Anthony Cifala, DO, age 90, passed away at Ann Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Dr. Cifala was born April 21st, 1922 in Washington, DC to Joseph and Vincette Cifala. From the age of 8 years old, he wanted to be an Osteopath after he was healed of a serious injury by Della Mattson, DO. At age 13 years, he was the youngest person ever to apply to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), although it would be 5 more years until he was allowed to attend. During his studies there, he met his wife Laura, an obstetrical nurse. Upon his graduation, Dr. John and Laura opened his family practice in Arlington, VA, where he practiced for 60 years, and she served as nurse and office manager. In 1948, Dr. Cifala was the first DO to be accepted into the Veteran's Administration in Washington, DC, where he was appointed head of the Physical Medicine Department. As a member of the House of Delegates of the American Osteopathic Association, he worked passionately to legalize the Osteopathic profession in all 50 states, which at that time had only a handful of licensed states. As one of the first Osteopaths on the East Coast, he also helped found the Osteopathic College of Rehabilitative Medicine and served as president. In later years, he became president of the Maryland, DC, and Virginia Osteopathic Medical Associations and lectured extensively on the importance of human touch in healing. Dr. Cifala is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laura Amalfitano Cifala, whom he frequently described as "my extraordinary life partner", and their six children (ToniAnn, John, JoAnn, Michael, Steven and Celeste), 17 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband and devoted father and his memory will be cherished by the many he has touched. He also leaves two brothers, Peter (Jenny) Cifala and Joseph (MaryEllen) Cifala, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Cifala was very proud that 18 members of his family became Doctors of Osteopathy. He is remembered as a legend and pioneer in the profession. Visitation will be at Murphy's Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA on Friday, March 1 at 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be at Saint James Catholic Church in Falls Church on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Sisters of Holy Cross, Office of Development, 407 Bertrand Hall, St. Mary, Notre Dame, IN 46556.Dr. Cifala was the first DO to be accepted into the Veteran's Administration in Washington, DC, where he was appointed head of the Physical Medicine Department. I was a patient of Dr. Cifala in the 1980-ies. He helped w/neck/back pain and suggested some vitamins for Bone & Arthritis Therapy. I STILL take those vitamins!! He was a lovely man. I know he will be missed by many.

My very fortunate associations with this great gentleman, osteopathic physician and pioneer came through the American Academy of Osteopathy. I treasure the many memories of our quiet conversations about the activities and potential activities of that organization. Such were clearly examples of his guiding legacy of service to the profession he loved.

Our hearts and prayers are with you at this time. What a beautiful love story lived by Uncle John. So much devotion to Aunt Laura as well as his family.

It was a joy, honor, and a learning experience to have the opportunity to associate with Dr. Cifala. His leadership and experience at the House of Delegates is legend, and he always was willing to share and provide direction and wisdom. His true love of Osteopathic Medicine was clearly evident. I was honored to frequently be asked to evaluate and treat him with OMM. In the process I always learned more of the history and application of Osteopathic Medicine. He will be missed as one of the great and humble individuals of the profession.

Laura and Family - Dr. Cifala was a true gentlemen and one of the most humble men I have ever known. I can't begin to relay how much he taught me about the osteopathic medical profession in our chats over the years - a treasured mentor for me! God bless you all as you grieve the loss of this giant DO who was a true pioneer for the profession.

Uncle John will be remembered always as a great man, kind, compassionate, caring, loving, full of wisdom and full of life. He most definitely lived his life to the fullest. I have wonderful memories through the years of time spent with him and his family! In addition, he was a great physician who contributed so much to our profession. Along with his brother-in-laws, they started the long lineage of Osteopathic physicians who would follow in their foot steps. My love to Aunt Laura, my cousins, all of his grand children and great grand children.

Laura,
Joann and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family. John was not only a great physician and leader, but a wonderful person. We always looked forward to seeing the two of you at all PCOM events. John will be greatly missed by his collegues and the profession.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr.Cifala when I was a third year medical student at PCOM. He was very gracious and allowed me to do my OPP/Family Medicine Selective with him. During that month, Mrs. Cifala invited my husband, a student at Georgetown Med, and I to dinner. We had a wonderful evening with the Cifalas. Doctor also introduced me to his colleagues, Drs. Harold and Stephen Blood, and I also was able to spend time at their practice in Alexandria. We remet when he returned to PCOM to accept a very well deserved honor, the O.J.Snyder Medal. It was wonderful, after 30 years, to see him and Mrs. Cicada again.

While I did not know John personally, his contributions to the Osteopathic Medical Profession as well as to PCOM and to Patient Care have paved the path for generations to come. My deepest condoleneces to the family on the passing of this great man!

Know my prayers are with you. Uncle John was such a loving, gentle, and caring man.It seemed like he was always to be found with Aunt Laura, right by his side. What stands out to me most was their love for each other. They could make the blind smile at sight and the deaf perceive sound. I remember Aunt Laura sharing with me,their secret to years of marriage," Love, patiences[time]and more love." Uncle John would utter in delight," I love your aunt, she is my best-friend!" His love and commitment for the Lord, Aunt Laura, his family, and all who knew him will always be deeply rooted in my heart.Thank you Uncle John for showing what real love is all about, "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."1Cor13:7.
