Woman Chooses To Die Two Days After Husband's Birthday

Brittany Maynard, 29, plans to die Nov. 1, two days after celebrating her husband's birthday.

The path that led her to this decision began in 2013, when Maynard began to experience debilitating headaches. In January 2014, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and told she had 10 years to live, at most. But that diagnosis paled in comparison to the news she later received, that her tumor had progressed into Glioblastoma multiforme, the most lethal form of brain cancer. Her decade shrank to just 14 months, with doctors telling her that she would probably experience a slow, painful and debilitating death.

Rather than wait for the tumor to slowly destroy her, Maynard, who lives with her husband in Portland, Ore., chose to end her life on her own terms.  She will become one of more than 750 people who have used Oregon's Death with Dignity Act to end their lives.

Maynard told People.com: "I want to live. I wish there was a cure for my disease, but there's not. ... Being able to choose to go with dignity is less terrifying."

In a video posted online, Maynard explains her decision and why it's so important for patients to have the right to take control of their lives and deaths.

A fund set up in her honor is soliciting donations to continue her work. Donations can be made to The Brittany Fund online, and visitors can learn more about her life and mission.
