Hall DERKIN Obituary

DERKIN Hall Stewart Hall Stewart Derkin, co-founder of Derkin and Wise Inc., a Toledo industrial distribution company, passed quietly into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Monday, June 11, 2012. Mr. Derkin was under hospice care at Kingston Residence Center in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born April 27, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was there in business school that Hall met the girl who was to become his wife and companion of 65 years. The beauty that stole his heart was a transplanted westerner, Aurel Janice Pole. After graduation from business school, the advent of WWII postponed their wedding plans. Hall served in the US Army Air Corps as a cryptographer, and Aurel in the USMC in San Diego. Hall's service took him to the China-India-Burma Theater, and he attained the rank of Captain before his discharge. The couple were married during wartime in 1945, and soon after war's end, Hall took a variety of industrial sales positions, culminating in a position as Vice President of a Toledo distribution firm, Bigelow-Gibson, Inc. In 1959, he and long-time business associate Lee Wise, co-founded the Toledo company that still bears their names: Derkin and Wise, Inc. Serving the industrial community for over 50 years, Derkin and Wise is currently owned and operated by his sons, Mark and Jim Derkin. Hall had a heart for service and a passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a founding member of Bethany Community Fellowship (formerly Bethany Baptist Church) in Sylvania, Ohio, and served there in teaching and leadership capacities for many years. There are many who can attest to his personal generosity and gracious hospitality freely and lovingly given as was given to him by his Lord. Generous with his time and administrative skills, Hall served as board member and board chairman of several Christian organizations, including Mission Training International, Christian Service Brigade, and the Gideon's International. Having lost Aurel in 2009, Hall is now survived and grievously missed by his sons, Hall Scott Derkin (Carol), Mark Stewart Derkin (Shelley) and James Ambrose Derkin (MariJo); grandchildren, Lisa Darlington and husband Nick, Elizabeth Jewell and husband Jeff (Scott and Carol's daughters), Sarah Perez and husband Rob, Blue Christopher Derkin and wife Tess, Emily Star Derkin, and Anna Jane Wisniewski and husband Eric (children of Mark and Shelley), Joel Derkin, Benjamin Derkin and wife Jennifer, Samuel Derkin and Joseph Derkin (Jim and MariJo's sons); great-grandsons, William Connor Darlington, Jackson Cole Perez, and William Stewart Perez, and great-granddaughter, Lucy Margaret Aurel Jewell. The family rejoices that he is now reunited with his beloved Aurel; they both are now more alive than ever in the presence of their Lord. Friends may call at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio Sunday, June 17, 2012, between 4:00 and 8:00 o'clock. Services are 10:00 o'clock, Monday, June 18, 2012, at Bethany Community Fellowship, 5757 Flanders Rd. (at Alexis Rd.), Sylvania, OH 43560. Interment with military honors follows at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, and then a reception luncheon at the church. Those wishing to honor Hall with charitable contributions are asked to consider, Bethany Community Fellowship, Gideon's International, Mission Training International, or Christian Service Brigade. I admired many things about Hall. He had an outstanding working vocabulary, he was warmhearted and always willing to help someone. Whenever I traveled I'd phone Hall on my departure, and he would pray for safe passage for me. I always arrived safely.

I will miss Hall terribly, but I know that I'll see him again in Heaven - right along with all my other Christian friends.

What a delight to work with Hall for a number of years while on staff at Bethany Community Fellowship. He always found the right word for our deliberations and we called him our 'wordsmith.' His first call to me was in 1967 when his partner, our friend, Leon Wise, suggested that the Riccitelli's, home on furlough from Burkina Faso, West Africa, might be able to fill the the first Sunday their newly called pastor was to preach but could not because he was stuck in Chicago in a blizzard. We obliged and that began our friendship. He would call occasionally and always prefaced his remarks with, "I've come to you with my brass bowl" and was ready to ask if we could come the following Sunday because the pastor was not able to preach. He was warm hearted, knowledgeable in the Word of God, and ready with sound counsel. He was beloved and will be missed. But what joy is his today to be free from the burdens of humanity, free to see Jesus face to face, and glorify his Savior and Lord!
