Obituary Condolences

GJESTEBY, Arne Kjell Of Cohasset, died peacefully at home on August 31, 2013 after a long illness. He was 89. A native of Oslo, Norway, Arne was a World War II veteran of the Royal Norwegian Air Force in exile in "Little Norway", Ontario, Canada. During the war, members of his family were imprisoned by the Nazis. He graduated with a degree in law from Oslo University and he studied in the graduate business program at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Arne was an astute and successful businessman with a tireless work ethic. He is the former owner of Klausen/Gestby, a ship supply company located in Boston, MA. For 28 years he was the Treasurer of the Cohasset Rotary and a committed and dedicated Rotarian. He attended Rotary meetings whenever and wherever he traveled throughout the world. Arne was also a two term member and Chair of the Cohasset Advisory Committee and served on the Ambulance Study Committee. He was an avid sailer and skier. Arne was a long time member of the Cohasset Yacht Club and over the years was seen at the helm of Solace heading out of Cohasset harbor. He was a fixture in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire where the family spent 20 years skiing, hiking, swimming and being together. Grandpa Arne often was seen there teaching his grandchildren the finer points of the card game hearts. Arne also enjoyed playing competitive bridge and achieved the level of Silver Life Master. Arne is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha, and by his children Erik Gjesteby of Potter Valley, CA; Rolf Gjesteby of Cohasset; Ingrid Janes and her husband Dale of Longmeadow, MA; and, Nils Gjesteby and his wife Janet of Winchester, MA. He was loved and admired by his grandchildren, Erika and Lars Gjesteby; Adam, Scott and Sarah Janes; and, Anna, Olivia and Henry Gjesteby. He loved his grandchildren. Arne is also survived by his two sisters, Anne-Lisbet Gjesteby and Kari Gjesteby of Oslo, Norway. His brother Odd preceded him in death. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian in Cohasset.
