Audrey Mayhew Obituary

Audrey Wright Mayhew MINT HILL - Audrey Wright Mayhew, of Mint Hill, departed this life to join her husband Pete, and they now dance among the stars. She was born January 31, 1924 in Peoria, IL, daughter of the late Myrtle and Glenn Wright. She served in the Women's Air Corps during WWII. After she was honorably discharged a Sergeant, she met and married L. P. Mayhew and they remained married for over 50 years and cultivated many deep, enduring friendships. They successfully operated Mayhew Electric Company for many years and were well respected among their peers. She had a keen mind for taxes and finances and was quick to offer "unsolicited" advice. To anyone that knew her, she could be a force of nature unparalleled in determination and dedication to her friends and family always extending a helping hand to those who might be disenfranchised or downtrodden. She never shrank back in the face of adversity and stood strong in her beliefs no matter who she pissed off. She was active in the community and in politics. She was the first woman to run for City Council in Charlotte in the '60s. After moving out to Mint Hill in 1965 she served on the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners from 1973 to 1977, later running for Mayor many times and always against an incumbent. Not satisfied she re-focused her efforts in bids for County Commission. She was Chairman of the Southern Piedmont Hospital Advisory Board, a member of the North Carolina Small Business Council, a member of the Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Management Advisory Board, and a member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Republican Women's Club. She was also Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Adjustment and a member for 6 years. She left us to rejoin her husband, her precious granddaughter Stephanie, and Stephanie's two beautiful children, Rachael and Laura; her sisters Doris, Joanne and Jeanne; Roy and Susan Bell, Sharon Wheeler, Dave Livingston and a throng of friends. While all of them are keenly missed, they're all having a big time now. Survivors include her two daughters Virginia and Paula, Daddy's baby sister Becky, sister Shirley and her husband Tom, and many nieces and nephews (who were all terrified of her). A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 Sharon Amity Rd., Charlotte, NC. Memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors, ASPCA, The Mayhew Animal Home in England, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Sorry to hear this.. I am worried about my dad, just a matter months, according to the doctors. She was a tough old bird.. like a drill sergeant when we were kids but Pete was so calm.

Oh, we wish we could take away the hurt. Audrey always told me we were born too early. She did so much for so many including us. Pete was waiting for her and probably asked her why she took so long. Our prayers are with all. Love, Sue and John Sellers

Paula - We are so sorry to hear of Aunt Audrey's passing. As you said, she is now dancing in heaven with Pete. She was a wonderful woman. I'll never forget the fun we had when we came to visit her. We had many talks and she was great with her advice. She will be sadly missed, but I know she is happy now to be with your daddy again. Our thoughts are with you. Eva and Kirk.

Paula you wrote a masterpiece in describing your fearless Mom. Not since Annie Oakley has there been a woman like her. She didn't just wish for something she made it happen. Built her own beautiful home from stem to stern, even washing the workers' discarded tee shirts after a extra rough painting and plastering day...and used them for cleanup rags. She was a born leader and all of us were her devoted followers. If you ever have a doubt in miracles take a tour through Mayhew-Forrest Development in Mint Hill...our gal laid the walks, painted the curb trim, and spit polished her dream home. Everyone knew and loved Audrey..at every eateria in Mint Hill and Matthews. She knew the hurts of every waitperson, and gave many, myself among them, 'right on' advice on everything from changing a tire to growing our incomes. Audrey should have been the First Female US President, which she could have handled with her eyes closed. You just watch and see...things will start to shape up now that our Gal is up there running things..or at least making suggestions to her fellow Angels. I am already feeling more secure..Miss you Taxes as I called her because she did ours for us for years. Don't be too rough up there..give Pete and Peggy our love, Zekey and Bibee.
