Eugene Phipps Obituary

Eugene Hardy

Phipps

Charlotte - Mr. Phipps, 64, of Charlotte, NC died Friday, October 28, 2011 at his home surrounded by family after a battle with cancer. Born August 19, 1947 in Rocky Mount, NC, he was the son of the late Roy Mangum Phipps Sr. and Eugenia Hardy Phipps. He attended college at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Varsity Golf team. He attended graduate school at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Masters in Business Administration.

Mr. Phipps started his career in real estate development at Sea Pines in Hilton Head Island, SC. After moving to Charlotte, NC, he began a 22-year career with Bank of America overseeing multiple divisions. He retired in 2001 and spent much of his time volunteering and advising non-profit organizations. He chaired the Board of Directors at Sharon Towers, served as a board member of The Family Center, and was an avid supporter of Carolina Breast Friends. He also was an elder and committee member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He loved the game of golf and enjoyed playing rounds with his sons at Charlotte Country Club.

Gene was blessed with many wonderful friends throughout his life, whom he cherished as family. He truly enjoyed spending time with all of them during vacations, weekends at Lake Norman, and in the mountains of North Carolina. His honest opinion and advice were often sought by colleagues, and his friends will always remember his clever wit and laughter. We are grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support from these individuals over the past year.

Gene is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 38 years, Pam, and their two sons: David Phipps and his wife Katie of Greenville, SC; Michael Phipps and his wife Lauren of Hong Kong. He is also survived by one grandson, Wyatt Phipps, brother Roy Phipps Jr. and his wife Betty K., mother-in-law Jane Perkins, and sister-in-law Patricia Perkins.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead St. with a reception following. The family will also receive friends on Tuesday evening, November 1 from 6:30-8:00 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28204, Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211, or Carolina Breast Friends, 1607 East Morehead St. Charlotte, NC 28207. Pam:
Gene was a special person who I came to admire many years ago when we both served on the Board of the Family Center. I enjoyed so much playing golf with him on many occasions mostly at CCC but also on a special weekend several years ago at Bald Head Island. He was a caring and courageous man who all that knew him will greatly miss. Missy and my thoughts and condolences go out to you and your family. Best, Doug Anderson

Pam--Our nephew, Stewart forwarded us Gene's obituary. We are so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. Haven't seen you guys since the old Sea Pines days, but knew Stewart and David were friends. Apropos of Gene's many talents, Barbara and I just got off the golf course. The entire Phipps family is in our prayers. Bob and Barbara Moore

Pam, David, and Michael,

Stan and I send our love and heartfelt sympathy to each one of you. I considered Gene a mentor. I was his vice chair on a committee and he took the time to teach me as he led. He was always there with gentle coaching advise when I needed it.

Gene always beamed when I asked for updates on you guys. May your hearts always carry Gene's love for each of you.

With deep sympathy,
