Agnes Kirby Houchens

Agnes Kirby Houchens, 88, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.

She was born January 27, 1921, in Fluvanna County, to the late Micajah W. Kirby and Lula F. Kirby.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Rea G. Houchens; and four brothers.

Mrs. Houchens was the first President of the Doe Club of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 389; a 51 year member and Past Matron of Queen Esther Chapter No. 14, Order of the Eastern Star; a 50 year Member and Past Worthy High Priestess of Old Dominion Shrine #2, White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Past Royal Matron of the Blue Ridge Court No. 8, Order of the Amaranth.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda H. Curcio and her husband, Joseph, of Bedford; a son, Rea Kent Houchens and his wife, Gertrude, of Greenwood; grandsons, Larry Houchens and his wife, Charlotte, Kevin Houchens and his wife, Joyce, Ron Marshall and his wife, Debbie, Don Marshall and his wife, Cindy, and Tony Marshall and his wife, Becky; great- grandchildren, Kirby Houchens, Jordon Rea Houchens, Sam Marshall, Christina Marshall, Heather Marshall, Jon Marshall, Hannah Marshall, Rusty Pranger, Jeanette Deering, Ashley Marshall and Sara Marshall; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden Marshall, Chloe Hanzon and Trevor Deering; and a very special friend, Charlotte Bailey.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the Teague Chapel with Pastor Patrick Mellott officiating. Interment will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2009, at the Teague Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, Grand Court of the Virginia, 103 Stratford Drive, Colonial Heights, VA 23834-1919.

A special thank you to Dr. Evans and all those who cared for Agnes at the Laurels, and the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital's Intensive Care Unit and the 7th floor.

Dear Kent and Linda, I was so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. I have fond memories of her when Pat and I were newlyweds. She helped us plan our wedding. Pat thought the world of her. God bless you in your grief but know that the angels are welcoming her home.
