Floyd Lewis Obituary

Floyd "Ooze"

Lewis Jr. On Saturday morning, December 4, 2010, Floyd "Ooze" Lewis Jr. passed away at the age of 89, at the Trinity Mission Nursing Home in Charlottesville, following a lengthy illness.

He was the son of the late Floyd and Lillie Lewis and was a life-long resident of the Charlottesville-Albemarle County area.

Floyd was preceded in death this year by his wife of 56 years, Doris Dearing Lewis; and by siblings, William Lewis, George Lewis and Geneva Lewis Hurley.

After attending Jefferson High School in Charlottesville, Floyd began working as a waiter, a craft he perfected in area restaurants and during 40 years of service in dining cars on the C&O and Amtrak passenger trains. After his "retirement" from the railroad, Floyd continued working for nearly 20 more years, bringing his unique bartending and catering skills to private events in the Central Virginia area and in service of recent Presidents of the University of Virginia.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army's 3104th Quartermaster Service with tours in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, and Central Europe. He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville on West Main Street and was a longtime member of the now defunct Joker's Social Club.

He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Lewis of McLean and Mark L. Lewis of Arlington; three grandchildren, Nicole Mitchell of Richardson, Texas, Sara Lewis of Arlington, and Matthew Lewis of Frederick, Maryland; and a host of loving nieces and nephews; along with many caring friends and a number of kind caregivers.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at First Baptist Church on West Main Street. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.jfbellfuneralhome.com.

J. F. Bell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mike: I just want to say that I am sorry to hear about the passing of your father. OOZE was a good friend and we worked together at Aberdeen Barn when I was in High School at Lane and we always ran into each other and just talked trash. My familes and my prayers are with you and may God continue to bless and keep you.

To the family of "Ooze" I am so sorry about his passing. My Mother and Father were so close to him (Zeke and Bernice Jones). My mother lives in Richmond now but asks about Mr. Lewis everyday. Please know that your family are in our prayers.
