I will never forget, and have often cited to others here at Harvard, the extremely high level of service Gerald offered to researchers at Alderman Library. He was always kind, highly competent - and funny.
The eulogistic ending of Middlemarch is not overplaced here."
"For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. Thank you, Gerald.

Gerald was extremely smart, very witty, interested in a wide array of topics, and incredibly nice.He was a terrific conversationalist, and I will miss his wry observations.

I enjoyed playing many strategy board games with Gerald Lientz. He had been head reference librarian for many years at Alderman Library at the University of Virginia. Consistent with that career, he had an immense knowledge of world history, and many anecdotes and stories. I enjoyed hearing those stories during board games and between them. When others would complain about the delay of a game, I would note that I preferred to hear those stories while I still could.

Gerald was a good friend. I worked with him for many years. He was a tireless volunteer for the SPCA- first in the book department of the large rummage sales and then in the SPCA Rummage Store. His dry humor and wit lightened the load when we were working long hours together. We shared a love of books, animals and Broadway music.

Gerald was my friend for 20+ years. Everybody who knew Gerald was struck by his gentleness and kindness. He was a great guy who played games every Friday at the UVA board game club. He retired at 52 and spent most of his retirement attending Game Convention, Writing Books, Painting Miniature Figurines and Volunteering at the local SPCA Rummage Store. He really loved to support the SPCA in any way he could. He is not replaceable as he was one of a kind. He will be missed....
