John Jenks Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Dec. 28 to Dec. 30, 2009.

Dr. John Story Jenks III

Dr. John Story Jenks III of Keswick, Virginia, died in his sleep early Sunday morning, December 27, 2009.

John was born December 24, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Mathews Jenks and the late Morton Jenks. He was preceded in death by his son, John Story Jenks IV; and his sister, Constance Jenks Wyatt.

John was the devoted husband of Elizabeth Chardon Harrigan Jenks, the loving father of Elizabeth McPherson Andrews Jenks, Sarah Boykin Jenks, and Stanley Patience Rugumayo. He was the beloved father-in-law of Emiko Rugumayo and grandfather of Joshua and Rachel Rugumayo.

John leaves his beloved mother and two sisters that he loved dearly, Margaret Jenks Heckman and Elizabeth Jenks Carden and their families; and his brother-in-law, Richard Wyatt and children. He also leaves his devoted in-laws Anthony and Elizabeth Harrigan and their children, Anthony Harrigan and his wife, Chase and children, Elliot Harrigan and his wife, Terrell, and children, Mary Harrigan Carr and her husband, Robert, and children.

John always said that the only thing that mattered to him was the love of his extended family and friends and his relationship with the Lord.

John graduated from The Middlesex School, Rollins College and Hahnemann Medical College. He did his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he met and married his wife. He then went on to do a fellowship in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism at Albany Medical College. John then took a position at Albany Medical College till the family moved back to the family home in Chesnut Hill, Pennsylvania, where he became Medical Director and Head of the Benjamin Franklin Clinic. In 1994, the family moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he served in various capacities with the University of Virginia's Health Services Foundation.

John Jenks lived a life full of both accomplishment and service. His passion for helping others was seen throughout his life; through his medical career and involvement in his community. John's vivacious personality, deep insight into other peoples hearts, close relationship with God, and his sense of humor are all attributes that made him an incredible husband, father, and friend.

The family expresses a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Gordon Morris and his staff for all their love and care.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m.Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. 3101 Fontaine Avenue Extended, Charlottesville, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Covenant School, The John Story Jenks Memorial Scholarship Fund, 175 Hickory Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

I learned of John's passing today through the Drexel Newsletter. With sadness I offer my condolences to you, his family. The lunchtime get-togethers for fellowship and prayer at Hahnemman are fond memories. I was a young Christian at the time and John was a tremendous encouragement to me. I remember him as one who loved God and people well. For you his absence hurts deeply but I hope you will be comforted in knowing that he is in the presence of his Heavenly Father.

John was a teammate on the Rollins crew where we enjoyed 4 years together and then afterward I often visted the family in Maine. He was truly an outstanding gentleman an example to all of us.

I had the pleasure of knowing John for the past 20 years and learned early in our relationship of how compassionate he was to his patients as a doctor, however, I learned later in our relationship when I worked for him that he also extended that same compassion for our employees and everyone he came into contact with. He was a man I greatly respected and I will miss him very much.

Dear Chardon,

I am in CA but heard from a friend that John had passed. I am very saddened by that. I did not know him well, but liked him enormously and found his upbeat attitude and fabulous smile totally infectious.

I send you my best wishes and hope that the wonderful memories you have of your fortunate time with this special man will carry you through the grieving.

John was a remarkable human being. He had an extraordinary gift to connect with people at a spiritual level. He became a close friend and we considered each other brothers, which I considered to be an honor. He is a source of inspiration and a role model for me. His family is a wonderful testament to John's life. His impact on me and our company was profound and will live on. I will miss him.

I have so many wonderful memories of John. He was always so full of life and his smile would light up a room. When he talked to you, he had the ability to make you feel like you were the only one in the room. John, you will be missed by so many people. I would have loved to have been at the welcome home party on Sunday with Grandfather, mom, Story, Jamey and so many others. You are forever in our hearts. Char, Liz, Sarah, and Stanley (and everyone else in the family), I love you all. As I well know, there really are no words that will make things better, but I hope that God sends you peace in the days ahead. If there is anything to do, please let me know.
