Linwood Martin Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Dec. 28 to Dec. 29, 2010.
Linwood Scott Martin

Linwood Scott Martin, 42, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, December 25, 2010.

Born on December 27, 1967, in Charlottesville, he was the son of Linwood Massie Martin and Margaret Breeden Martin of Charlottesville.

He was preceded in death by a cousin, Timothy Harding.

He was a painter by profession, but was a true musician, heart, body and soul. His greatest passion was his guitar, which was a true extension of his pure soul. His greatest treasure in life was his son; he was a very caring father, son, and brother, who put others before himself. He was full of love for everyone around him, family, friends, and even strangers that he would meet, he would always lend a helping hand to anyone that was in need. He never met a stranger, only new friends. He loved working with and helping the elderly residents at Midway Manor. "Smiley" as his friends called him, was always a light that beaconed in a room. To know him was to love him, to love him was to be engulfed in his beauty, not just in soul, but also in the music that flowed from his heart. May his soul shine forever in the hearts of everyone that was ever touched by his beauty.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Justin Cameron Martin of Charlottesville; a sister, Deborah Martin Shawkey and her husband, Robert, of Crimora; two nieces, Amber Lynn Shawkey of Waynesboro, and Jessica Loren Shawkey of Crimora; five uncles and eight aunts, Bland Martin Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Batesville, Robert Martin and his wife, Wanda, of Schuyler, Don McGann and his wife, Shirley, of Stuarts Draft, David Lutton and his wife, Liz, of Waynesboro, and David Breeden and his wife, Judy, of Scottsville, Lila Robertson of Staunton, Gladys Harding of Waynesboro, and Gene Madison of Richmond; 18 cousins, Robert Martin Jr., Amanda Jenkins, Laura Proffitt, Ricky Berry, Chris McGann, Pam Royer, Chad Martin, Sandra McDaniel, Robin Burkhead, Cindy Blackwell, Wes Lutton, Pam Reynolds, Michael Harding, Gary Harding, Phyllis Robinson, Jimmy Robinson, Tony Breeden, and Jason Breeden.

A special thank you to Scott King and Sam Hughes, who were his best friends for many years. More than friends, you both were brothers in soul and spirit and he could always count on you both through the toughest times of his life and share the joys of the happy times as well. Your friendship and brotherhood meant the world to him and means the world to his family as well. To all of his other friends not mentioned here by name, you also are wished a special thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Chapel. Interment will be private.

Smiley,

I can not belive that it has been 9 years already. Its as vivid in my mind as that day I received the call saying you had passed on to be with God. It's also as vivid as the night you visited me in a dream where no words were spoken, but we both knew what the other person wanted to say. All smiles we were just being in each other's company once again. Thank you for checking in on me from time to time when I need it the most. Very comforting to know that you are still a part of life, even in death.

Love & Miss You Every Day!!
Bobby

"My Brother"

When we were little I held your hand to keep you safe; now I dont need to worry because Jesus has taken my place.

Through the years of our life we've laughed and giggled together; now your laughing and giggling with the lord and all his angels.

God had bigger plans for you my brother so he's called you on home to be with him; but I will feel your presense in every bright blue sky, every flowing breeze and russle of every tree, every bird that sings will be singing your song and I will be waiting until we can be together again.

When it's my time to come before the lord I know you will be there to take my hand and walk me before the lord and we will be together again.

I will love you always my brother.

With love from: Your Sissy

I apologize if this is not the correct Linwood Scott Martin that I taught at Charlottesville High School. I think I was Scott's wood shop teacher (Mr. Peters) back when he was a sophomore or junior at CHS. If this is the correct Scott, I want you all to know that he built his own electric guitar out of Mahogany wood. All he talked about was playing his guitar. As I recall...he built the body and the neck and added a frat board from another older guitar he owned. He was so proud of himself and he did a fantastic job on the guitar. Scott never came back to play it for me as I never had him in any other classes at CHS. My deepest sympathy to his family and those who loved him so much. After teaching for the past 28 years, it's hard to see former student's lives cut short. Take Care...Mr. Rick Peters ([email protected])
