Robert McKinley Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Sep. 2 to Sep. 3, 2010.
Robert Baldrige McKinley Jr.

Robert Baldrige McKinley Jr., 61, of Crozet, died peacefully while sleeping after courageously fighting cancer for almost three years on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Robert was a selfless man, devoted husband, and the best father anyone could ask for. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

He was born on October 8, 1948, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Robert B. and Mary Thorne Miller McKinley.

Robert was a graduate of Lawrenceville School in Princeton, New Jersey and received his Master of Business Administration and his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. He was a member of Batesville Ruritans and the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Batesville, Virginia, and a building contractor.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Kirk McKinley of Crozet; three daughters, Bettie Gail McKinley of Charlottesville and Megan Tolbert McKinley and Emma Baldrige McKinley, both of Crozet, Virginia; one granddaughter, Ava Lyn Winter of Charlottesville; and one cousin, Mrs. Bryan Neff of Mansfield, Ohio.

A special thank you goes out to friends and family who were present during his struggle and thank you all who tried to save him.

A memorial service of communion and hymns will be held in Bob's honor at Holy Cross Church in Batesville, 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

I just learned of BT's passing in the Sigma Phi Flame. He and I were part of a unique group of five who were room mates our first year at UVa, joined Sigma Phi together and were fraternity brothers and daily companions for the next three years (BT, Fred Gaertner, Roxburgh Rennie, William (Junior) Walker III & myself). Sadly we scattered to the winds after college and in the pre-internet days it was easy to loose touch. In his heart, BT would have known that we thought about him often and still do. The world will be a lesser place without this sweet man ... he is missed.

I was one of Bob's roommates at Lawrenceville. I was very sorry to read of his passing in the alumni magazine. He was a great guy. I visited him at Batesville when he was a senior at U.Va. I regret not keeping in touch with him in later years.

Barbara, Bettie, Megan, and Emma,
So very sorry about the loss of your beloved husband and Dad. Will always remember our fun times when our girls swam. He was always smiling and such a gentle and kind person. So very glad he got to see his little Ava Lynn. My prayer is that God will hold each of you in the palm of his hand. May your many, many memories comfort you in the days ahead. Love and prayers, Jimmy and Lynn Rutherford-Snow and Joshua and Ashley Durham-Smith

Our family has known the McKinleys as neighbors and friends for 10 years. Never was there a sweeter family than them. BT always had a ready smile and was such a wonderful man. And you can't do something nice for them without Barbara returning the kindness, or just thinking of you and surprising you with a thoughtful gift just because. It's no wonder their girls are so lovely inside and out. We feel privileged to count them as friends and are so sad at BT's passing. May he and all of you find the peace that has eluded you these three long years.

Bob was a good man. Easygoing. Eager to please. Honest. Trustworthy. A true craftsman of a builder. Enjoyable to know, and work with. My thoughts are echoed by many clients and owners here at Wintergreen as well. People who's lives were bettered by knowing and working with Bob. We're all sad to see him go. His family has my sympathies and prayers. ~Cameron R Carroll, Wintergreen Real Estate Company

We are so very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He build our home at Wintergreen and what a beautiful job he did! This was the last home he was able to complete and it will always represent Bob McKinley and who he was. During our brief time together last year he became our friend and we would periodically check in with him to see how he was doing. Our sympathies go out to Bob's family...he truly was a special person.

Our dear friend B.T was a sweet and gentle soul. Unfailingly generous to our family, he shined a happy light into our lives for almost 40 years and will be missed so very much. Our love and profound sympathies to all of "B.T.'s girls."
