Vernon Bruce Belew Sr., 89, of Waynesboro, died Thursday, October 22, 2009, at Augusta Health.

He was born July 8, 1920, in Crozet, a son of Harry Loving Belew and Lena Critzer Belew.

After attending Greenwood High School, he entered the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He proudly watched from his ship as the United States Flag was raised on Iwo Jima.

Mr. Belew was a Pilgrim and Lifetime Member of the Waynesboro Moose Lodge #1309.

He loved volunteering with the Waynesboro Fire Department for 36 years.

Under the city's many beautification projects, Mr. Belew kept the numerous hanging baskets and flowers watered.

He was a member of Basic United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Mason Belew; and two sisters, Margaret Rittenhouse and Doris Ayres.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Gladys Rittenhouse Belew of Waynesboro; his daughter, Wanda Belew Easton and her husband, Granville, of Waynesboro; his son, Vernon Bruce Belew Jr. of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, Dawn, Mark, Amy, Crissy and Michael; 11 great-grandchildren, Ian, Chandler, Bryce, Lacey, Hannah, Jack, David, Christina, Benjamin, Allyson, and Brandon; two sisters-in-law, Mary Belew of Charlottesville, and Jane Belew of Earlysville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009, at McDow Funeral Home, and other times at the home of his daughter, 2304 Cortland Street, Waynesboro, Virginia.

A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2009, at Basic United Methodist Church by the Reverend Don Gibson. Interment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Vernon B. Belew Jr., Granville W. "Sony" Easton, Mark Marchant, Buddy Rittenhouse, Linwood Ayres, and William "Mac" Rittenhouse.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Waynesboro Fire Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro Fire Department, 300 West Broad Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980, or to Basic United Methodist Church, 489 North Winchester Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
