Dear John Paul and Jenny:
Mrs. Ballenger was my favorite teacher. She taught me at Berta Weathersby School (Southwest). I lived less than a block from the school. I stayed after school many, many times to help her grade papers, clean the room, change the bulletin board, etc. She always gave me a coke while we were working and 50cents when we finished. I always thought of myself as her favorite since I was "chosen" to be her after school helper.
One day she sent a sealed note to my mother by me. I thought she was telling her how special I was. Mother opened the note and it read "Hilda is a smart student but a good old fashioned spanking would do her a lot of good." I had not been nice to some of my classmates. That did not stop my love for her. She was still my favorite teacher all the way through high school. When I graduated from high school she came to our home and left a graduation gift for me with a note that I was one of her favorite students. I knew it all along. She made me feel special and that I could do anything I wanted to do.
She taught both of my children at the CEA Kindergarten. I remember the beautiful cookies she made for them. She was special to them too and they loved her dearly.
I thought you would like to know this story and what a special place she will always hold in my heart. I share your loss.

I consider it my honor to have had the opportunity a few years ago to let Mrs. Ballenger know what an influence she had on my life. This wonderful, caring woman was my second grade teacher at Southwest in the late fifties. She inspired me then to become a teacher myself. I've had a very rewarding 35 year career as an Exceptional Ed teacher because of her encouraging me to do my best and follow my dreams. Thank you so much for sharing the pictures. She was a beautiful woman inside and out! She touched my life and countless others as well. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Knowing and visiting with Mrs. Ballenger has been both a joy and a blessing. I will always count it a privilege to have known this truly gracious, Southern lady. Her children and extended family are a tribute to her Christian faith. God's strength to the family and special friend, Faye, as you lean on Him for comfort. Barbara
