I was privileged to know Don first as a classmate at Erin Presbyterian Church and Bearden school later as a gifted fellow lawyer and outstanding legal teacher. Always friendly and engaging. We all miss him. Don Stansberry Jr

Mr. Paine's writings and works have inspired me to study law more in depth for many years. I met him once at a CLE conference. Although I was a novice paralegal, he sat with me and discussed some evidence matters as if I were a seasoned lawyer. He was kind, generous, and brilliant. I am forever grateful for meeting him and feel honored to have shared conversation with him.

Don was a lawyer without peer and a witty and skilled lecturer. He was also an accomplished legal historian, writing often in the Tennessee Bar Journal on some interesting historical legal development in Tennessee. His articles were always succinct, enlightening, and a bit humorous.
He was always willing to share ideas and insight about areas of the law, especially related to procedure. I appreciate his mentorship.
I have not known any other lawyer who incorporaed into his legal persona legal scholarship, humor, and tenacious advocacy as well as Don. We will miss him.

I always loved walking by Don's apartment. He would often come out to say hi and greet my dog. He was a very nice and kind person. I will miss him but feel privileged to have known him.

Mr. Paine was kind enough to speak at my law school graduation in December, 1991. It was a small ceremony at the Bijou Theater. We presented him w a personal note and autographed photo from Emmylou Harris, one of his favorites! It was truly a pleasure to have known him and to have had him as a professor. He will be missed...

I am saddened by Don's death. He was a friend and classmate (law school and before). Although he had many wonderful accomplishments in his life and career, he will be missed mostly because of his goodness and thoughtful consideration of others. Please accept my sympathies.

I feel blessed that I was able to know Don for these many years that I have been a licensed attorney. Not only was Don a learned and wise man, he was a man with a soul who in recently past years dedicated himself to representation of the poor and disadvantaged in life.

"Professor Paine" was both a scholar and gentleman. I have had the pleasure of learning from him through 23 TLI seminars that he either taught or compiled literature for. Not only was he a learned man, but he taught with a wonderful sense of humor (including singing the parol evidence song, and bring a large stuffed panda to serve as the declarant for a hearsay lecture). He was indeed the epitome of a gentleman (southern) lawyer, and will be greatly missed.

I met Don at law school in 1998. He was always a true gentleman, teacher, and mentor. I enjoyed his contribution of custom home brew sold 3-years running at the annual UT Law School charity auction and the joy he shared in that fun. He made his mark and that is not a small success. I am better for knowing him and I will miss him. To his family, please accept my condolences as his loss is deeply felt and must be more felt by those closest to him.

Donnie was one of my "original friends" we met in elementary school and attended the same church. He was probably the best teacher of the law that I have known. He could make anything interesting. I really enjoyed his presentations on murders. Don Stansberry Jr

What a Prince of a Man, he was! He did so many wonderful things for others and I know that many of them are everlasting. What can you say about someone that has done so much for so many years for so many people? God Bless You, Don and you will be missed terribly.

He was a very special man. I went to him on many occasions to get advice. He and I had a great conversation about cementeries. He knew my daughter from the apartment complex. He will be missed by both of us.

I always said that if there were more of us like Don Paine, then this world would be a better place. I met Don Feb 2nd, 2008 as I walked up to my first day on the job as assistant manager where he lived, there he stood holding the door open for me. Over the amost 6 years, it was as if he had "adopted" my child, now almost 19 and in college. He learned that Mackenzie and I loved chicken salad so every week, atleast once but sometimes more, he would bring us chicken salad from Littons. Such a sweet man, always trying to help someone or doing for someone what he could and that is what he wanted to do. I learned so much from him, about his interesting life, his love for books and his alter ego, Casey Jones the detective. We had lots of laughs over that and my life is much richer having had the almost 6 years to get to know him. He will be forever missed.

Donnie and I were friends at Bearden Elementary School and I enjoyed visits to his home to play football and be awed by his collection of toy soldiers. He taught my daughter-in-law at the UT Law School and she has often spoken of her respect for him as a teacher. I didn't know Don as an adult, but I am none-the-less saddened by his loss. Knoxville will miss him.
