Phoebe Beesemyer Obituary

Beesemyer, Phoebe Ann Harmon November 14, 1921 - April 3, 2012 Phoebe Ann Harmon Beesemyer Phoebe Ann, the second of four children, was born on November 14, 1921 in Hollywood, California to George and Anita Harmon. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grammar School, Le Conte Junior High and Hollywood High School. Continuing her education, she enrolled at UCLA for three years where she joined the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority; Phoebe remained active in the Thetas for most of her adult life. On April 15, 1945, she married a fellow classmate, Frank W. Beesemyer, and together they raised a family of seven children in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. Besides caring for her large and exuberant family, Phoebe also contributed her talents to Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish as well as volunteered at the Diabetes Association. Upon Frank's retirement, Phoebe fulfilled a long-standing dream of living at the beach; Phoebe and Frank moved to Oxnard. When Frank died in 1990 after forty-five years of marriage, however, Phoebe relocated to Santa Monica where she joined the Beach Club and spent many happy hours walking, reading, doing the crossword, and sunbathing with her family and friends. After her move to Santa Monica, she also resumed her church service and was an active member of Saint Monica's Parish. After a short illness, Phoebe died at home with peace and dignity surrounded by her children and grandchildren. The family she so loved and that she so tirelessly endeavored to keep close-knit said its final good-byes to Mother, Mom and Nana around 9:00 PM on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Phoebe is survived by her brother, Roger Harmon, her children, Peter, Eric, Victoria, Christopher, Heidi, Karl and Ilsa, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Please join us in celebrating Phoebe's life on Wednesday, April 18 at 10:00 AM in Saint Monica's Catholic Church (725 California Avenue, Santa Monica, 310-566-1500). And while Phoebe loved flowers, she loved helping people more; so please direct any expression of your regard to a favorite charity in Phoebe's name. It is with tears, laughter, and love that we all say farewell to an extraordinary lady.

As a child, I lived next door to the senior Beesemyer family and knew Frank and his family well. When Frank and Phoebe were first married, they lived in the same house (which the seniors had retired and left to them). Phoebe was a super happy and energetic heroine for me, a role model. I remember working in the garden with her and learning how to make lemon meringue pie in the big old fashioned kitchen. She set a standard for me as to what being a wife could be.

Dear Beesemeyers - This is Julie Wong, Ron's oldest daughter. Do you remember when I got left behind at your house when my family stopped there on the way to a trip and I was reading a book and didn't hear everybody load up? With seven kids in your own family, I'm sure the last thing you needed was a family of six more kids piling out at your house and swimming in your pool, but your mother was always a gracious hostess with a lot of class. Glad that you were all with her even with three great-grandchildren. I always remember her smiling and with a lot of snappy comments. Julie Wong
