SYLVIA SKEWES-COX Obituary

Sylvia Farny Skewes-Cox Former Marin resident Sylvia "Sibby" Skewes-Cox died July 24, 2010 in Surprise, Arizona, where she had lived for the past 10 years. She died a few hours before her 82nd birthday. Sibby was born in Evanston, Illinois and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and New York City. She attended Friends Seminary in New York and graduated from Wellesley, College. Following graduation, Sibby moved to San Francisco where she started what would become a livelong career in the travel industry, concentrating on specialized tours for her clients. In 1951, she married Robin Warne Skewes-Cox who shared her love of travel. While living in San Francisco, they had two children, John and Josie. In 1962 the family moved to San Anselmo, where they lived for many years before eventually moving to Lucas Valley. Robin died in 1998 and a few years later Sibby moved to Arizona. In addition to her love of travel, Sibby loved to entertain and there was no occasion too small to be celebrated. She was a wonderful gourmet cook and took great pride in her huge collection of recipes. Josie and John and the family wish to thank the loving friends who took such good care of Sibby during her final months in Arizona. They were so caring of her and did everything they could to make her happy and comfortable. Sibby is survived by her son John of Redding, California, her daughter Josie of San Rafael, and her sister Josie Little of Aptos. She also leaves her sisters-in-law Joan Malone of Wyoming and Mary Skewes-Cox of Marin County, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. We already miss her so very much. A memorial service and reception will be held at St. John's Church in Ross, California, at 2:00 PM on October 17, 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Marin Humane Society or to Hospice.
