Betty M. Halleran, 71, of Riverside, passed from this life on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at her home in Riverside. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. The service will be available via Livestream at the Beatty Peterseim Facebook and YouTube pages. Private family burial will follow at the St. Vincent Cemetery west of Riverside. The family will greet friends from 4 – 7 PM on Friday, June 30 at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Ladies Auxiliary of Riverside VFW Post #6414 and the Richmond Am Vet Post #107.
Betty Marie (Schillig) Halleran was born July 18, 1951, in Iowa City, the daughter of Matt and Betty (Pokorny) Schillig. She graduated from City High School in Iowa City. On August 17, 1968, she was united in marriage to William Halleran in Iowa City. Betty owned and operated the Kalona BP Station for many years. She was a member of the Riverside VFW Post #6414, the Riverside Fire Department, 1st Responders for 25 years, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Betty enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, gardening, baking, and cooking. The most important thing to Betty was spending time with her family, and she was extremely close to her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Bill of Riverside, three children: Tina (Tim) Thomann of Riverside, Bill, Jr. (Amy) Halleran of Sigourney, Rick (Patsy) Halleran of Fairfax; seven grandchildren: Garrit, Emilee, and Isaac Thomann, Tanner and Brock Halleran, Caleb and Blake Halleran; one brother, John (Tracey) Schillig of Easton, KS, and four sisters: Karen (Bruce) Barnekow of Mason City, Barb (Gary) Carlson of Anamosa, Shirley (Greg) Harland of Kalona and Kris (Juan) Sandiford, Nassau, Bahama.
Preceding Betty in death were her parents, her brother Michael in infancy, her brother Matt, Jr., and one sister, Becky Schillig.
