Bruce Barton Dumont
June 18, 1944 – September 10, 2025
Bruce Barton Dumont, a pioneering force in Chicago’s media and civic landscape, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Connecticut and raised in Chicago, Bruce was deeply influenced by his parents, Donald and Esther Dumont, and his uncle, TV innovator Allen B. DuMont. He was preceded in death by his siblings, James Kelton DuMont Sr. and Donna Rae (DuMont) Burns.
After attending Schurz High School and studying broadcasting at Columbia College Chicago, Bruce launched a celebrated career in radio and television. He held key roles at WGN, WBEZ, WLTD, and WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. He was also host of Illinois Lawmakers, and received multiple Emmys, an Iris Award, a Golden Gavel, and the Silver Circle Award for his contributions to public affairs journalism.
In 1980, he created Beyond the Beltway, a nationally syndicated political talk show known for balanced debate and civic insight. His passion for preserving media history led him to found the Museum of Broadcast Communications in 1987, which remains home to the Radio Hall of Fame and several authoritative industry encyclopedias. Bruce is survived by Kevin Fuller, his devoted husband and partner of 26 years; his daughter, Jennifre' DuMont; four grandchildren (Ruby, Lucy, Lexy, and Jesse); a son-in-law, Berto Rodriguez; and extended family in Los Angeles. He was previously married to Marcia DuMont and the late Kathy Osterman. An avid conversationalist, political thinker, and White Sox fan, Bruce leaves a lasting legacy in media, public discourse, and civic education.
Memorial service details will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Museum of Broadcast Communications or Columbia College Chicago.
