Yordis Nielsen, age 81, of Duchesne, Utah, wife of Douglas Nielsen, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
Yordis was born on November 20, 1943, in Tonsberg, Norway to Thorkild Wersland and Inger Brunsvik. When she was just 5 years old her family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints and they soon after came to America. They settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She married her sweetheart, Douglas E. Nielsen on August 25, 1963, and together they raised 5 children in Duchesne. Yordis was a talented Hair Stylist and did hair in her home for many years. She always had a job or two, be it babysitting or waitressing. She worked in the lunch kitchen at Duchesne Elementary and later worked for Zions Bank and Moon Lake Electric. Upon her retirement, she was an elected member of the Moon Lake Electric Board of Directors where she served for 9 years.
Mom had an infectious smile and a warm and generous spirit. She genuinely cared for those around her. She was blessed with many talents and always had a project going on, be it her lovely, crocheted blessing gowns for her granddaughters, her oil paintings or baby quilts. She loved decorating her home and always kept up on the latest trends. She loved beautiful clothes and always dressed top notch. She kept a beautiful yard and took pride in that, growing amazing petunias and a garden full of tomatoes. She was very active in her community and loved Duchesne. She served as a City Council member and worked on the City Beautification Committee and Arts Council and helped in many other community projects. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served diligently in many positions. She loved the Temple and its Ordinances. She attended often and enjoyed many years as a Temple worker. Her Testimony of her Savior and Gods plan was strong and it brought much comfort and peace to her. She cherished her children and grandchildren. She loved us all deeply and we were truly her greatest joy to her last days.
She was survived by her husband of 62 years, Douglas E. Nielsen and their 5 children: Lisa Majors, Debbie Nielsen, Todd Nielsen, Mark (Teresa) Nielsen, Jennifer (Justin) Parker. 17 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and one more on the way. Her siblings: Swen (Dora) Wersland, Fred (Renate') Brunsvik, Lilly Caron, Glenda Mathews, Evelyn (Daniel) Day, Elaine Despain and sisters- in-law, Joyce Cottam, Barbara Barnett, and Laurie Lee.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents;,Magnus and Ragna Brunsvik, Gustav and Hjørdis Wersland, her parents, Thorkild Wersland and Charles and Inger Mathews, her mother and father-in-law; Mark and Amy Nielsen, her son-in-law, Brandon Robinson, brothers-in-law, Clay Nielsen, Kent Nielsen, Mark A. Nielsen, Robert Nielsen, and sister-in-law, Leneta Walk.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the
Duchesne 1st & 3rd Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Viewings will be held on Wednesday evening at the church from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and Thursday from 9:30 - 10:45 AM.
Burial will be in the Duchesne City Cemetery under the direction of the Hullinger Mortuary.
