Benton Doherty Obituary
Benton Hoskins Doherty, a resident of Oak Park for 25 years, was raised in Waynesboro, Mississippi and Elmhurst, Illinois. He was actively involved in the Oak Park community, as a volunteer for PADS, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Third Unitarian Church and the University of Illinois Historian's Office. Benton was the beloved father of Denise Mattingly and Deborah (Fred) Beuttler. He was the proud grandfather of Colleen and Erin Mattingly and Frederick, Nathan, and Hans Beuttler.
During World War II he served as a Marine in the battle of Okinawa and in China. He earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was a principal at Holmes School in Oak Park, and later was an investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor. He retired in 1991, and moved with his family to northern Virginia in 2006. He loved golf, bridge, reading and spending time with his family.

A private memorial service will be held on Friday, March 11 at 1 p.m., Crossway Fellowship, 8601 Plantation Lane, Manassas, VA 20110

I always enjoyed discussing life and teaching with him. He had such a great sense of humor and was such a good man. While he will be dearly missed, may he be happy and at peace now that he's gone home!
