SYLVIA HARE Obituary

HARE, SYLVIA Sylvia Hare, born July 26, 1929 in New Haven, CT to the late James and Lillian Cole Powell entered eternal rest on March 30, 2015. Sylvia was always an athletic individual; not only because of her outstanding ability but because she loved sports. After completing her college years, Sylvia worked for 35 years in New Haven as an outstanding Physical Education teacher in New Haven. Mrs. Hare always encouraged her students in all the academic classes. She kept in touch with them after they left her to go on to college. Mrs. Hare enjoyed her early retirement here in New Haven until her daughter took her to live in Texas for ten years. A celebration of her life will take place Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Luke Episcopal Church; 111 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, CT 06511. Interment will take place in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Sylvia was my godmother and a bridesmaid in my mother's wedding. My mother, Helen Morton Gist, died in June.

I'm comforted by the fact that Sylvia, Jay and Mama are at peace now. We don't have to worry about them anymore. They are forever alive in our memories. Jackey Gist

Mrs. Hare was truly invested in the lives of her students from the first day they entered Winchester Elementary to the college application process/college graduation and beyond! She will truly be missed forever and forever etched in the hearts of all of those she encountered. My deepest condolences to the entire family!

Sylvia was a unique, truly dedicated teacher, mother and community activist. She touched thousands of lives in so many was over the years. She was a positive influence on me personally and professionally and any success I've had as an urban educator can be traced directly back to the years I taught at Winchester School with her. May she rest in peace.
