I´m not an acquaintance, but through reading the book The Outpost, I got to know what a wonderful, selfless, kind person and soldier Buddy Hughie was. My condolences, and I know his purest soul is watching over his loved ones. Rest easy, Buddy Hughie.

Hughleen Thorsen - Sgt. Buddy Hughie's Adopt a Soldier in Prayer
September 1, 2021
On this day and always, we honor Sgt. Buddy J. Hughie and his Gold Star Family for the sacrifices that they made in the war in Afghanistan that came to its conclusion one minute before midnight for Tuesday, 31 August 2021 evacuation date. Sgt. Buddie Hughie was "One of Ours." He was from the Great State of Oklahoma, an Oklahoma National Guardsman, an American soldier and medic ... One of Us ... One of Ours as the Nebraska author Willa Cather wrote about in her 1922 Pulitzer Prize winning novel on WWI. He risked his life and gave his life for others just as Jesus spoke about in the Gospel of John: "There is no greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." Sgt. Hughie is the son of valor and duty, bravery and heroism in his life and in his death. His service in Afghanistan mattered; his life mattered; he made a difference in the world that he was part of. May eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him; and may the God of all consolation shine his eternal light on his family and friends that mourn and remember him this day and always.

February 20, 2018
My name is Tom Arnold. I am an actor and comedian. I was in Afghanistan with Dax Shepard in 2007. We left the usual USO tour because we wanted to meet service men and women who didn't get to the bases for shows. We knew it was a dangerous area and the Taliban attacked and took the life of a young man. They were still shelling when they brought him back but everyone stopped and we were so honored to be a part of his hero's service. We took a few minutes then the wounded arrived and it was my job to try to do whatever I could to distract them while the medics worked. It was solum and intense and there was so much respect for Buddy and his comrades. A helicopter was able to land a couple hours later and we jumped on and ended up at Bagram. Because the family hadn't been notified and because of the location and circumstances of that firefight I couldn't get Buddy's name but I've thought about him at least once a week since. My friend Jake Tapper of CNN tweets pictures of fallen heros and I always take time to read their stories but there was something about Buddy's face that got to me last night. I looked at the dates, called Dax, checked the records and realized Buddy was our boy. He even had a Chicago Cubs hat on and I thought how our happy he'd be our Cubbies won the World Series. I'm grateful I got to go there and see Buddy and honor him. My thoughts and prayers are now and always have been for his friends and family. I will never forget Buddy Hughie.

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.
While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more
To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.
The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill
I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Buddy,
I guess it has been a short three years, hasn't it? I barely remember the times that have passed, so much has happened. I just wanted you to know that I've not forgotten you, old friend. You were the older brother I never had, you were the person I wanted to grow up to be like. I miss you, brother, I truly do. I know you were doing what you believed was right and in the end gave your life for others. I would have never expected anything else from a man I love and respect as much as you. Thank you, Buddy. I wish I had had the nerve to tell you that I loved you like a brother, that I wished I had an older brother like you. I miss you, Buddy, and I always will.

Well its been a while since the passing of Doc and feel i didnt know him as well as i would of liked. I served as the Admin NCO for his unit in Afghanistan and i feel i got to know him more after his death than i did in his life, and i can see clearly he touched all the soldier's who new him cause a year after his death you can still see the scars as visible in his unit as they were when they told us had happened. I find myself late at night thinking of the things we did as a unit and trying to remember everything only to find that some of the minor details have slipped away. But when i start thinking of Buddie and that day I cant forget a thing. When i am alone in the car or sitting by myself i find myself pondering on that day. I guess where i am going is that i cant imagine what his closest friends go through because i know what i go through and like i said before we werent close at all.
God Bless Buddie and all of his Friends and family.

He was an outstanding soldier with the urge to save or help whoever he could and numerous people could give testiment to that.. We will miss you Doc.. and we'll see you soon enough!

I can't believe it's already been a year since Buddy willingly, bravely and galantly rushed to save another man's life. What is it in a man that drives him to aid those in need? How can one man heroically face such danger, while others run from it?
I can still see (in my mind's eye) me and Buddy standing in the back yard... talking. He has his head cocked to one side with that big white smile like he always had.
Although I can not believe this year has gone, it still seems like yesterday Buddy was here feeding infant Cooper and trying to figure out how to nestle him on his shoulder to burp him.
Sgt. Buddy James Hughie was a remarkable US Army medic but he was the World's Best Daddy for the two weeks he was able.
Carter (my other grandson...so young) sees Buddy ever so often. He just laughs and says " Hey Buddy, hey Buddy" Carter's mom says, "You see Uncle Budd?" "He right there" comes the reply as he points to where he sees his Uncle Buddy.
Our American Hero impacted many lives during his time on this earth. Would that we all have such a legacy.
Rest In Peace

A Mass has been scheduled for Sgt. Buddy Hughie for the Christmas Season at Saint Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church, a historic church in downtown Omaha. It was announced in yesterday's church bulletin that it will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 12:05 p.m. and will be said by a priest who has said Masses previously for Sgt. Hughie. He knows a little bit about Sgt. Hughie's life from reading the articles I gave to him from the website "Faces of the Fallen." At each Mass he has talked about Sgt. Hughie especially how he had given his life for others and he used Sgt. Hughie's life as an example on how we are supposed to be in our lives........what we may be asked or called upon to do in our lives in order to help others. During this Holy Season of Christmas may God continue to bless Sgt. Buddy Hughie and his family and all those who love and miss him so very much.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Let's see...how does the story go...While serving as a training advisor for the Afghan Army at Camp Alamo a new secfor platoon showed up at the gate. They looked a little rough. Are they any good? Do they know what they're doin'? Very soon those questions were answered and all doubt cast aside. We learned they were fellow Oklahomans and took them in becuase most of our own detatchment is from Oklahoma. I remember the days they left us in small groups to go "down range." I told them see ya later and that I would put my boot where the sun dosn't shine if they let anyone hurt them. They just luaghed as a Soldier should. To the men of Charlie Company my heart goes out to you for the loss of your commrade. My heart goes out to the family and most of all to his son.
Let it be known to all your father was a true warrior and a good man.
God speed.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. "Doc" was a good friend to my friend Tom Dodson. I was truly saddened to hear of his death. I felt like I knew him as often as Tom and I spoke of him. I had also seen a couple of pictures of him on Tom's website.
I have read many internet articles on what a hero he was and how unselfish and giving he was. Please know that his sacrifices do not go unappriciated and that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

This loss of a life leaves me tearful. The courage young men show in battle and the overwhelming concern for others cannot be taught, cannot be instilled. Rather it is a gift of God. May God Bless you and yours.

It is with deep sadness that I am forced to honor the memory of another fallen Warrior. I ask the family and friends of Sgt. Buddy Hughie to accept the offer of my most sincere and heart felt condolences. I hope that you know that your loss is shared by a grateful America. Most of whom you have not met and in all probability will never meet. Our nation sincerely appreciates the sacrifices of your patriot.
Freedom is not free; it is paid for by our heroes!
I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!
Rest in Peace Brave Warrior; you did your duty with great honor, dedication and in the Highest Tradition of the United States of America.
