Herb was such an awesome guy and a true mentor. I was so blessed to have spent time with him on & off the softball field @ OVHS. I will never forget how he encouraged me to graduate. He was the ONLY one that stood by my side and believed I could do it. His support and guidance were truly my inspiration. Thank you for making a difference in my life Herb. R.I.P.

I just want to tell everyone how much my sister and I appreciate all the support and kind words we got about our father. he was a wonderful dad and person. He was also the greatest grandpa ever. the girls at OV and HB meant so much to him. I know he hated to have to give that up. We are very touched that you started a scholarship fund in his name. Thank you all for being such an important part of my dad's life. May he RIP. love you daddy.

My sister and I were overwhelmed with the many kind words and wonderful memories you have of our dad. He always regretted not finding the perfect "job" until after retiring. I know he loved his life in Huntington Beach, working with the kids at both schools kept him young. He was so happy to see "his kids" when he went out. When I came home to visit him, you were everywhere, working at Marie Callendars, at the movie theater, many places and he was always so happy to see you after you graduated. We thank you all for sharing a part of him with us. When I was a little girl he always teased me that the flags were flying on Flag Day for his birthday, June 14. Well, for me they always will.

Herb,

I know that I speak for a lot of people when I say that you helped make my years at Ocean View brighter. For so many of us you where the friendly hello and the person we go talk to when we needed support.

You gave so much to so many of us, just know how much we appreciated you. You will be truly missed. Go Seahawks!

Upon hearing of Herb’s passing I reflected on all the years that encompassed our relationship. From my perspective Herb Rosenthal was a unique individual that truly cared about others more that he cared for himself. His love for people, sports and Ocean View High School was unmatched by anyone and really genuine. Herb was Mr. OV when my daughters, Janee and Jena, attended the school and our relationship continued to grow on both a personal and softball level when I coached in the 90’s. Herb always did whatever was necessary to put the student athletes first whether it would be driving the van, ordering uniforms, organizing the coaches, attending practices and games or just a friendly and trusted individual to give counseling and advice. Many times he helped by just listening and not judging. Herb was a tireless worker, always supportive but offering in his own style the proper way forward so the kids would receive the greatest benefit. He was always teaching life lessons and was wise beyond his years sharing his perspective with others. His unconditional caring and competitive nature was unshakable-just ask any umpire that made a bad call against OV. Herb was always the happiest after a win against a big name rival or playoff game. He reveled in the way a team came together and survived against all odds. Although he has left this Earth he has given us wonderful memories and life lessons to share with others. We can only hope to someday achieve a fraction of what he accomplished. We will surely miss you Herbie.

Herb- I will miss the conversations we had when we worked together at Ocean View. While I supervised you, I never had to worry about you not doing your job. You were always able to help and guide the young minds in HB.

Your skills as a coach are of the same caliber as Coach Wooden. You were able to lead the lady Seahawks and produce high caliber basketball and softball players.

I remember when i first started going to Ocean View i didn't know where anything was at and i even got lost. Herb was my first run in with the Security there and he helped me find my classes and also made sure i know where and how to open the lockers there. He will be miss by all. He touched all who knew him. Herb helped me through losing someone close to me while i was at school. He helped me to know that they were being cared for by someone who loved them and wanted them home early. Thank You Heb. You will be missed..

Herb Rosenthal Athletic Scholarship Fund

Herb Rosenthal was a man who had an impact on many high school students in the Huntington Beach area, and his charisma, passion and dedication was shared at Ocean View High School for nearly 20 years. After retiring, Herb worked on staff as a security supervisor and was often seen cruising around campus on his golf cart, making sure kids were attending class and behaving. However, it was through his involvement in after-school athletics where Herb really touched people’s lives. He was an assistant coach for both girls’ basketball and girls’ softball; he was a mentor, a friend, and everyone’s biggest fan. You could probably count the games or practices Herb missed during his tenure on one hand. He was such an important part of Ocean View athletics and was always there to support the Seahawks in nearly every sport.

Sadly, Herb passed away on September 28, 2010, from heart failure at his home in Temecula, CA. He previously lived in Huntington Beach for 32 years. Herb was born in Los Angeles on June 14, 1937. He attended Manual Arts High School and went on to work and retired from Boys Market in Los Angeles after 32 years. Herb was a big USC Trojans fan and enjoyed the WWE. He was an easy-going, caring and pleasant man who loved his grandchildren and was well-liked and respected by everyone who knew him.

With Herb’s passing, a group of former Ocean View student-athletes have come together to establish the Herb Rosenthal Athletic Scholarship Fund. This is something that they felt Herb would truly love and is a great way to keep his legacy alive at Ocean View High School. The scholarship fund is designed to provide funding to those student-athletes who cannot otherwise afford the costs to participate in high school athletics. The goal is to keep the Herb Rosenthal Athletic Scholarship Fund as a year-round scholarship program. Different student-athletes will be awarded a scholarship each school year to cover their respective costs, which will allow them to participate and be a part of Seahawk athletics.

Herb, what a great example of a human being- caring, kind, generous, loyal, honest, and most of all a true friend. I have so many memories with you. You were always there for me, when I was out of control especially. At times when I wanted to rage and show my attitude during basketball, you always came over, put your hands on my shoulders and did your best to calm me down. I have this picture somewhere that was shown in our basketball slide show at our banquet my freshman year where I'm sitting on the bench during a game and you are standing behind me with your hands on my shoulders. It is one that now will become a memento and shows just what you stood for in my life. That person to never judge me for my out of control ways. I have vivid memories of you riding around school in your golf cart, being my basketball and softball coach, your laugh, your voice, your presence! Remember when you crashed the school van when we went to our San Diego tournament for basketball after my freshman year? Oh the memories of that moment will always bring a smile to my face. Even after you left Ocean View 2 go to HBHS, you still showed your commitment to me and my family by coming 2 support my little sister play basketball, and for that I extend my sincerest thank you! Oh and how can I forget, those yearly christmas cards that would come in the mail signed Love, Herb- yeah those too will always be a reminder of your kind gestures to me and my family! You've undoubtedly touched so many peoples lives, some more than others, and I can say that because of this among many other attributes you contributed to our greater happiness while your presence was felt on this earth. You may be gone in person, but your legacy and memories will always be with me! Thank you for all that you did for me, I will never be the same because I got to be in your presence! Spread your greatness up there, wherever you rest now, and keep watching over me so the attitude and bad attributes I used to possess don't return. And if for some reason they do, please don't hesitate to again rest your hands on my shoulders and guide me through...much love and respect Herb, you will surely be missed!

Herb epitomized all the goodness and kindness that man has to offer. I fondly recall sitting at OVHS in the stands watching basketball games and having wonderfully delightful conversations with him. He was such a role model for my 3 girls while they attended OVHS and offered nothing less than gentle kindness. I will truly miss Herb and want to offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family. He was truly an original and one of a kind. I am a better person for having known him. Travel well, my friend. Marion Sheppard
