Ellsworth Miller Obituary

DR. ELLSWORTH (DOC) EARLE MILLER A longtime resident and public servant in Redlands, died Saturday, October 2nd. He was 97 years old. Born in Canada on December 1st, 1912, his family\'s farm interests brought them to North Dakota. In 1921, Ellsworth made it west to Glendale, California where he attended school in the Glendale and Los Angeles areas. Ellsworth received his Bachelor\'s degree from Washington State University before returning to California where he earned a Doctor of Chiropractic from the Southern California College of Chiropractics in 1940. It was during this time, February 10th, 1940, that Ellsworth met and married his wife, Clelah Miller. Practicing in the North Hollywood area during the outbreak of World War II, Ellsworth proudly served in the United States Navy as a Physical Therapy Technician. During his service from 1942 through 1945 he was deployed to the South Pacific and stationed at various bases including Noumea, Guadalcanal, and Bougainville. It was also during his service in 1943 that his daughter, Dulcey Miller, was born. After the war, Ellsworth returned to California in 1947, resuming his chiropractic practice in Redlands. While living in Redlands, Ellsworth was a tireless public servant for his community by volunteering his time in local affiliations such as the Optimist Club, Elks Club, American Legion, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, the Redlands Footlighters, and the American Red Cross. A majority of his service can be traced back to the Optimist club of which he was a lifetime member. Having joined the Optimist club in 1941 at North Hollywood, he resumed this affiliation in Redlands and became president in 1950. In charge of forming new clubs in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, Ellsworth is credited with organizing groups at Crestline, Colton and Palm Springs. For the contributions that he made to the city of Redlands, Ellsworth was named Redlands Man of the Year in 1957. However, his service continued as he was elected and served on the City Council from 1970 to 1976 and acted in the capacity of Vice Mayor of Redlands from 1974 to 1976. After he retired from his chiropractic practice, Ellsworth and his wife moved to Silver Lakes and have lived in the Cherry Valley area for the last twenty years. Despite losing his loving wife, Clelah in 2001, Ellsworth maintained a very active life filled with golf, fishing and card playing with the members of his community. Survivors include his daughter, Dulcey Miller, and two grandsons, Michael Alyn Miller and Stephen Marshburn. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Emmerson-Bartlett Redlands Chapel. Flowers can be sent to the chapel, or you can donate to Redlands Optimist Club Foundation in memory of Ellsworth. EMMERSON BARTLETT MEMORIAL CHAPEL Redlands is handling arrangements (909) 793-2311
