In July 1976, then CPT Blanding was my Company Commander when I attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Dix, NJ.

I recall vividly, my very first impression of CPT Blanding at our very first company formation. CPT Blanding was tall, very tall and possessed an imposing appearance. CPT Blanding had a habit of wearing his headgear, especially his helmet liner, just above his eyes which added to his daunting look. Since this was the first real Commissioned Officer I had ever had, I recall thinking to myself how professional and eloquent he presented himself. CPT Blanding was known by all the trainees and Cadre as a fair Commander who took care of the soldiers under his command and treated us with the utmost respect.

I distinctly remember a demonstration that CPT Blanding put on for the entire company. The company formed into a giant circle on the company grounds as CPT Blanding began removing his headgear and fatigue top. He went on to perform a martial-arts demonstration that had the jaws of the entire company drop.

We all eventually moved on to our respective assignments and I never heard of him again until today when I decided to Google his unique name and found that my very first Commander had fallen asleep. I feel bad as I retired in 1996, ironically enough from Fort-Dix, NJ and returned to my childhood neighborhood in West Orange, NJ. If I had known that LTC(R) Blanding was so close in distance to me, I would have definitely looked him up. I also noticed that LTC(R) Blanding went on to pursue his military career doing great and wonderous things but that does not surprise me, not in the least.

I want extend my most sincere condolences to the family and relatives of LTC(R) Zenola "Z" Blanding. He was a great man and soldier who cared for and looked out for his soldiers, and I will never forget him. Greek Orthodox Christians believe that once a body goes to sleep here on earth, the soul lives on and goes to heaven and into a place of everlasting life and peace.

May his memory be eternal...

I will forever be endebted to Dr. Blanding for his guidance, tutelage and knowledge. Not only was he a brilliant professor, but he was also significant in my recovery from depression in the mid 90's. Dr. Blanding was significant in my diagnosis and assisted me in seeking treatment at the time. I learned so much from him during my time at Rowan University and am so very sorry to hear of his passing. He had a significant impact on my life.

I'm very sorry to hear of Zenola's passing. I too have fond memories of Zenola, his kindness, his attentiveness, and nurturing spirit. He took time with my nephews and me. He made us feel like our lives mattered and that we had the potential to do great things. Be strong Zeki and Zake. Your father's legacy includes you. Don't let him down.

God Bless my cousins Zeki and Zach through this time. Uncle Zenola was like a father to me and my life was enriched by knowing, loving, and learning from him. I am very sadden but will forever cherish the memories. I would like Zeki and Zach to remember these words; He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man. Hold tight to memories for comfort. Lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared about. As you comprehend this profound loss, let yourself cry knowing each tear is a note of love rising to the heavens.
Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow.
Love you guys with all my heart,
Robyn

I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Blanding's passing. I had the opportunity to have him as my professor for Abnormal Psychology in the Spring Semester of 2000 at Rowan University. Thorought the years, we had became very close friends. He was the first person I called when I was offered a position at the Division of Youth & Family Services in 2001 & when I was engaged in 2009. His kind & encouraging words always made me feel at peace. I will never forget his soothing voice & laugh. He ended every conversation with "Bless your heart Brianne". It is now my turn to say "Bless your heart Dr. Blanding". He was the most influential & intelligent person I ever had the priveledge to call a friend. I am honored to have known him & will never forget the life lessions he taught me. His spirit will never be forgotten.

My heart is heavy, but I will always remember my Uncle Z as one of the most kindhearted, softspoken and thoughtful of men. He was always ready to share an encouraging word and showed a genuine interest in each person he met. My condolences, thoughts and prayers are with the Blanding family as you celebrate a man that touched so many lives in such a wonderfully special way. May Uncle Z be at peace and at rest.

So sorry for your loss. Dr. Blanding was one of the most wonderful bosses in the world and I feel blessed to have known him. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

April 25, 2012

When Z came to the Psychology Department at Rowan University, I had the pleasure of working with him for almost ten years. He was a remarkable man and left an everlasting impression on me. His schedule was always full and we would laugh when he would show me his calendar so I could try and find a time to schedule a meeting. He showed kindness and caring at all times - no matter how busy he was, he always had time to talk and help in any way possible. He talked about his daughter and son and was so proud of them. I wish I could think of the right words to express my gratitude for having known him. He loved teaching and will be remembered by many students.

Good-bye my dear, dear friend "Z". Although I first knew you as a colleague at Rowan University, we quickly became very close friends. You possessed a very special blend of intelligence, charisma and warmth.

James Brown may have been the "hardest working man in show business", but you were the hardest working man I ever met.....period! I tried many times(with limited success) to get you to slow down, but you had too many causes that were very important to you, and, Z, you were all about giving.

I'll miss you, "Z". Rest in peace.
