George (Mickey) Mason passed away in Lincoln, California surrounded by his loving family at his bedside on Saturday September 18, 2010 at the age of 82.
Born in Chico, California on August 25, 1928 to John Thomas and Gladys Mason, he was a 77 year resident of Auburn.
He attended Edgewood School, a one room school, grades 1-8 located on Mt. Vernon Road in the Edgewood district of Auburn. He also attended Lincoln Way, Alta Vista grade school and Placer High School.
After graduation from Placer he joined the US Air Force and was stationed in France and Germany as a radar instructor and discharged after 4 years of service. In 1950 he was recalled to service during the Korean War for one more year.
He worked at Safeway in Auburn for 33 years retiring in 1988. He also served on the Executive Board for United Food Workers of Northern California for 12 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Auburn and Auburn Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Mason and sister Dorothy Nicholas. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Mason of 61 years, children Melanie and Brad of Loomis, Michelle and Bob Skiles of Marysville, Michael and Valerie Mason of Roseville. He is a grandfather to Mitchell, Mason, Somer, Tiffany, and Gabriel. Mickey also has one great grandchild, Drake. He is also survived by his brother Joseph Mason of Rocklin and Pege Deny of Hidden Valley Lake, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mickey can be remembered for his love of gardening and helping many friends with their gardens. He also loved decorating for many functions held at Elks Lodge and working on many floats for parades in the community.
Memorial Services will be held Friday October 8, 2010 at 11:30 a.m., at The First Congregational Church of Auburn, 710 Auburn Ravine Road, Auburn. A reception will be held following the service at Auburn Elks Lodge, 195 Pine Street, Auburn.
